PML-N's Hina Arshad Warraich wins PP-52 Sialkot by-election

Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) candidate Hina Arshad Warraich has secured a decisive victory in the PP-52 Sialkot by-election, winning 78,419 votes, Radio Pakistan reported.
Her closest rival, Fakhir Nishat Ghumman, was significantly behind with 40,037 votes, according to unofficial results from all 185 polling stations. PTI has decried alleged rigging.

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif congratulated Warraich on her success, describing the victory as a clear reflection of public trust in the government's policies.
Both leaders expressed their gratitude towards the electorate for showing overwhelming support for the ruling party.
The by-election, which was closely watched, further strengthens PML-N's position in the Punjab Assembly, with analysts pointing out the magnitude of Warraich's victory as a significant political win for the party.
Earlier, she was leading with 78,702 votes in PP-52 Sialkot by-elections, according to unofficial and incomplete results from 165 out of 185 polling stations received in the late hours of Sunday.
Hina was fielded as the ruling party's candidate in the by-elections announced after the death of MPA Chaudhry Arshad Warraich, who had won the seat in the Feb 8 general elections on the PML-N's ticket.
Hina held a clear lead over candidates from other parties, including the PTI-backed independent candidate Fakhir Nishat Ghumman, who secured 39,018 votes, according to the unofficial tally.
Speaking to a private TV channel, Hina said the people did not elect her for politics but for service. "I stand here today because of Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz," she stated.
Defense Minister Khawaja Asif, who also belongs to Sialkot, visited the residence of Hina Warraich.
Addressing party workers, he thanked those who participated in the election campaign across Punjab, adding that based on results from 165 polling stations, Hina is securing a decisive victory. "Sialkot was, is, and will remain a stronghold of the PML-N," he said.
PTI's Central Secretary for Information, Sheikh Waqas Akram, during a press conference in Islamabad, however, alleged that the by-election in PP-52 Sambrial witnessed "thuggery under police patronage".
"The turnout at our rally in Sambrial was unforgettable. People came out early in the morning to protect the mandate, but the PML-N's goons resorted to violence," he claimed.
He alleged that under police protection, PTI supporters were forcibly removed from polling stations and subjected to violence. "PML-N forcibly entered polling stations and cast fake votes," he said.
PPP Central Punjab President Raja Pervaiz Ashraf also accused the PML-N of resorting to rigging in a press conference held in Sambrial.
"The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) must take notice of the rigging in the PP-52 by-election. Our polling agents and workers were attacked in Roliya, Begowal, Mitranwali, and Babundoki Chamiyan.
"Local PML-N leadership should not have resorted to such actions this undermines the credibility of the entire electoral process," he added. Elections should be free and fair. Our people were harassed and forced out of polling stations."
PPP General Secretary Syed Hassan Murtaza also claimed that the PML-N cannot contest elections "without siding with the umpires". The 2024 elections, he said, witnessed the worst rigging in history."
After the press conference, the ECP issued a statement describing Raja Pervaiz Ashraf's allegations of rigging in PP-52 Sialkot as baseless. It advised PPP leaders to file a formal complaint with solid evidence.
"The ECP will address all complaints promptly," it said, adding that the reports about the administration shutting down various polling stations are completely false.

The Punjab Home Department on Saturday categorically denied a report published in UK online newspaper The Independent about the "inhumane" treatment being meted out to PTI Patron-in-Chief Imran Khan and his spouse Bushra Bibi during their incarceration, stating that both husband and wife were "receiving full legal entitlements". While speaking to the British newspaper, Zulfiqar Ali Bukhari, a close aide to Imran, said the PTI founding chairman and his wife had been subjected to "psychological" torment in prison. Bibi was "gravely ill", he said, and "fainted in prison" due to the heat nearly two weeks ago. Bukhari told The Independent that even the water supplied to Bibi for ablutions had "got mud and sand and dirt inside of it, purposely." In January, Khan and Bibi were sentenced to 14 and seven years in prison, respectively, in the £190 reference. Responding to the article, the Punjab Home department stated that both Khan and Bibi were receiving "full legal entitlements" in jail. In a statement, it termed the claims made in the British online newspaper as "baseless, politically charged and factually incorrect". The Punjab Home department maintained that both Khan and Bibi had been provided Class-A jail facilities and had access to uninterrupted electricity without any load-shedding. The department added that they undergo daily medical check-ups and receive full medical support. The statement further noted that food was being served in line with their personal preferences, while legal and family visits were allowed in accordance with court orders. Both detainees have remained in the same cell since their arrival and have not been moved or isolated, it said. Terming the report an attempt to "mislead global audiences," the Punjab Home department emphasised that Pakistan upholds prisoner rights in line with legal and humanitarian standards.

PTI says not afraid of penalties & disqualification
LAHORE: Tensions in the Punjab Assembly deepened this week as opposition lawmakers condemned disciplinary actions against them following a protest during the provincial budget session, accusing the Punjab Assembly Speaker of acting on government directives and stifling dissent. Addressing the Assembly and media on Saturday, Opposition Leader Malik Ahmad Khan Bhachar declared that the opposition would continue its protest campaign 'inside and outside' the legislature, regardless of penalties or disqualification threats. 'We are not afraid of being de-seated or fined. It was the collective decision of our parliamentary party,' Bhachar said. He criticised Speaker Malik Muhammad Ahmad Khan for allegedly refusing him the right to speak, despite procedural entitlements. 'When the opposition leader rises, he is entitled to the mic under assembly rules,' Bhachar argued. He also accused the Speaker of violating legislative procedures and taking dictation from Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz, rather than upholding neutrality as the house custodian. The protest, held during Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz's budget speech on Friday, saw opposition lawmakers chanting slogans, surrounding the Speaker's dais, and tearing documents. In response, the Speaker suspended over two dozen members, including Malik Fahad Masood, Tanveer Aslam, Riffat Mahmood, Yasir Qureshi, and others. He announced that references for disqualification would be submitted to the Election Commission and fines exceeding Rs2 million were imposed on 10 PTI lawmakers for previous disruptions. 'Protest is everyone's right, but it must remain within constitutional and procedural bounds,' the Speaker stated in a press conference. 'No member can be allowed to hijack the system.' Bhachar, however, remained defiant. 'This government behaves like a Pharaoh, but every Pharaoh has a Moses. Ours is already here — and he sits in Adiala Jail, cell 804,' he said, referencing incarcerated PTI founder Imran Khan. 'They stole our mandate using Form 47, took away reserved seats, and now want to rob us of our right to protest.' Speaking alongside PTI Secretary General Salman Akram Raja and senior leader Sardar Latif Khosa, Bhachar reiterated that their demonstration was peaceful and within democratic norms. 'If our criticism of authoritarianism is considered an insult, then we will continue to insult such tyranny,' he said, referencing the PML-N's own aggressive tactics during the previous government's tenure. Raja emphasised that the people of Pakistan demand dignity and democratic representation. 'It's a fallacy to assume the masses are indifferent. They have always voted for democracy and want their votes to count,' he said. He urged those wielding 'real power' to engage in dialogue and criticised the current administration as lacking legitimacy. 'This is a government on crutches, and even they admit they are operating under compulsion.' EU plans to add carbon credits to new climate goal, document shows
BRUSSELS: The European Commission is set to propose counting carbon credits bought from other countries towards the European Union's 2040 climate target, a Commission document seen by Reuters showed. The Commission is due to propose a legally binding EU climate target for 2040 on July 2. The EU executive had initially planned a 90% net emissions cut, against 1990 levels, but in recent months has sought to make this goal more flexible, in response to pushback from governments including Italy, Poland and the Czech Republic, concerned about the cost. An internal Commission summary of the upcoming proposal, seen by Reuters, said the EU would be able to use 'high-quality international credits' from a UN-backed carbon credits market to meet 3% of the emissions cuts towards the 2040 goal. The document said the credits would be phased in from 2036, and that additional EU legislation would later set out the origin and quality criteria that the credits must meet, and details of how they would be purchased. The move would in effect ease the emissions cuts - and the investments required - from European industries needed to hit the 90% emissions-cutting target. For the share of the target met by credits, the EU would buy 'credits' from projects that reduce CO2 emissions abroad - for example, forest restoration in Brazil - rather than reducing emissions in Europe. Proponents say these credits are a crucial way to raise funds for CO2-cutting projects in developing nations. But recent scandals have shown some credit-generating projects did not deliver the climate benefits they claimed. The document said the Commission will add other flexibilities to the 90% target, as Brussels attempts to contain resistance from governments struggling to fund the green transition alongside priorities including defence, and industries who say ambitious environmental regulations hurt their competitiveness. These include integrating credits from projects that remove CO2 from the atmosphere into the EU's carbon market so that European industries can buy these credits to offset some of their own emissions, the document said. The draft would also give countries more flexibility on which sectors in their economy do the heavy lifting to meet the 2040 goal, 'to support the achievement of targets in a cost-effective way'. A Commission spokesperson declined to comment on the upcoming proposal, which could still change before it is published next week. EU countries and the European Parliament must negotiate the final target and could amend what the Commission proposes.
