Over 133 lakh students take China's Gaokao, 10x more than India's biggest exams

India Today09-06-2025
China came to a halt this Saturday as 13.35 million (133.5 lakh) students sat for the Gaokao 2025 – the national college entrance exam that can make or break careers. Held across thousands of centres, this year's number was slightly lower than 2024, when 13.42 million students took the test.Known for being one of the toughest university entrance exams in the world, Gaokao decides who gets into China's top colleges. The pressure? Immense. Outside each centre, crowds of anxious parents waited with snacks, drinks, and even flowers, hoping to cheer their kids on.What's interesting is that the number of students that appear for this exam in China is much higher than the number that appeared for the last CBSE Class 12 board exams (16.92 lakhs) or the last JEE Mains (12.58 lakhs) session. The number of participants is more than 10 times than those appearing for the biggest exams in India!SECURITY, AI CAMERAS AND FREE RIDES FOR STUDENTSGaokao day in China is no ordinary day. Cities brought in temporary traffic rules to keep roads around exam halls clear. Many students even got free transport help to reach their centres on time.Inside, some centres used AI-powered cameras to catch anything unusual -- an extra step to avoid cheating and maintain fairness. Police used drones and other high-tech tools to watch over the process.Chinese Vice Premier Ding Xuexiang visited a school in Taiyuan and called for extra safety and fairness during the exam.GAOKAO STILL SEEN AS A DOOR TO A BETTER FUTUREEver since it was brought back in 1977, Gaokao has helped millions move ahead in life. As per Xinhua, 'Gaokao, the unified exam, has transformed millions of lives through merit-based selection.'According to China's education ministry, over 47 million students were enrolled in colleges and universities by 2023. While the gross enrolment rate in higher education has crossed 60%, fresh graduates face tough job prospects due to a slowing economy -- about 12 million students enter the workforce every year.(With PTI inputs)

Photography permitted inside MIA, restrictions in place at Dabolim airport: CM

Panaji, Aug 5 (PTI) Goa Chief Minister Pramod Sawant on Tuesday said photography by air travellers is permitted at terminal buildings of Manohar International Airport, while restrictions are in place at the international airport in Dabolim. Sawant was responding to Congress MLA Carlos Ferreira's calling attention motion regarding confusion over the prohibition of photography at the state's airports. Manohar International Airport is a civil airport, while the Goa International Airport in Dabolim serves as a runway for aircraft operating out of the Indian Navy's INS Hansa on the Western front. He said the earlier restrictions about photography at airport terminals and from inside aircraft have been revised. 'Photography by passengers of scheduled flights in terminal buildings of civil aerodromes and civil enclaves of defence aerodromes is now allowed," the chief minister said. He, however, clarified that photography and videography from inside an aircraft, particularly at defence airports (Dabolim airport), remain prohibited under directives issued by the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA). The DGCA has also mandated that window shades be kept closed below 10,000 feet during take-off and landing at defence airports to prevent inadvertent capture of sensitive installations, Sawant said. He added that restrictions are particularly stringent at airports near the western border, including Dabolim (Goa), Leh, Srinagar, and Jammu. Sawant said that the airlines have been instructed to inform passengers of these restrictions via announcements and visible signage. 'The prohibition aims to safeguard national security by preventing any potential capture of sensitive military operations or infrastructure," he added. Social Justice ministry yet to receive Rohini Commission report: Minister

New Delhi, Aug 5 (PTI) Over two years after the Rohini Commission submitted its report on sub-categorisation of Other Backward Classes (OBCs), the Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment on Tuesday said it has not yet received the report. In response to a question in Lok Sabha, Social Justice and Empowerment Minister Dr. Virendra Kumar said that the Commission, chaired by retired Justice G. Rohini, had submitted its final report to the President on July 31, 2023. However, he noted, 'The report has not been received in this department." Set up in October 2017, the Rohini Commission was tasked with examining the need for sub-categorisation within the nearly 2,600 OBC groups to ensure more equitable distribution of reservation benefits. INDIA blocs EC march rescheduled to August 11,

Agency: PTI Last Updated: New Delhi, Aug 5 (PTI) The Opposition's march to the Election Commission of India headquarters against the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) in Bihar has been rescheduled to August 11, a source said on Tuesday. The march, earlier scheduled to be held on August 8, was rescheduled after the death of former Jharkhand chief minister Shibu Soren. The schedule of the dinner meeting of the INDIA bloc leaders remains the same, and will be held on the evening of August 7 at Lok Sabha Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi's new residence – 5, Sunehri Bagh road. Popularly known as Guruji, Shibu Soren died at a private hospital in Delhi on Monday. Several Opposition leaders are visiting Ranchi on Tuesday to pay their last respects to the leader credited with leading the agitation for the formation of the state of Jharkhand. Following his death, a protest that the Congress was to hold in Bengaluru on Tuesday was postponed to August 8. That protest is to be led by Rahul Gandhi. The Congress is protesting against what it calls large-scale manipulation of electoral rolls in Bengaluru's Mahadevapura constituency in the 2023 Assembly polls. At a meeting of the INDIA bloc parties on Tuesday morning, Opposition leaders agreed that SIR remains the key issue for the Monsoon Session, and they will continue protests inside, as well as outside, the House, pressing for a debate on the issue. Opposition parties have warned that the exercise may lead to disenfranchisement of many, and have called it 'vote-bandi" and 'vote-chori" (vote theft).
