According to the The Indian Express, one of the workers killed in the attack was a 39-year-old migrant worker from Jharkhand's Bokaro district, identified as Ganesh Karmali.
The other deceased Indian worker was identified only as Krishnan from a southern India state. The abducted Indian national was identified as Ranjit Singh from Jammu and Kashmir, who reportedly provided security to Transrail Lighting Ltd, where all the deceased workers were employed.
'Mission in Niamey is in touch with local authorities to repatriate mortal remains and ensure safe release of the abducted Indian. All Indians in Niger are advised to remain vigilant," said the Indian Embassy.
What Happened In Niger?
Local sources told AFP that unidentified armed attackers ambushed a Nigerien army unit providing security at a construction site for an electrical line in the Dosso region, around 100 kilometres (63 miles) from the capital Niamey.
Karmail's family told The Indian Express that his brother-in-law, Premlal Karmali, also worked at the same site and sustained bullet injuries. He is under police protection in Niger, along with four other workers from Jharkhand who want to return home.
Shikha Lakra, head of the State Migrant Workers Control Room under the Labour Department, said Karmail died in the crossfire between police and militants and a process to repatriate workers from Niger has been initiated, along with the remains of the deceased workers.
Sapna Kumari, Ganesh Karmali's 20-year-old daughter, said her father had assured the family that his company insurance cover was worth Rs 40 lakh, but the company has now promised to give the family only Rs 12 lakh. 'We haven't even been contacted by the company directly. Only the contractor is speaking to us. We just want justice and for my father's body to return with dignity," she said.
The Dosso region borders both Nigeria and Benin, where attacks regularly target civilians, the army and also a giant oil pipeline transporting crude from Niger to Benin. The authorities generally blame such attacks on 'terrorists" or 'bandits".
Niger, under military rule following a 2023 coup, has faced around a decade of violence perpetrated by jihadists affiliated to Al-Qaeda and the Islamic State group.
According to official Indian sources, five Indian technicians were kidnapped in an April 25 attack just north of the nearby town of Sakoira. Twelve Nigerien soldiers were killed in that attack.

HC refuses to quash FIR against Pune teacher over Op Sindoor linked remarks
The Bombay high court on Tuesday refused to quash the first information report (FIR) registered against 46-year-old Farah Deeba, a Pune-based former teacher, for allegedly ridiculing India and Prime Minister Narendra Modi on the WhatsApp group of her housing society following Operation Sindoor. her neighbour told the police in a complaint. (REPRESENTATIVE PIC) Deeba's reference to India as 'makkar' (deceitful) and her connection with Pakistan through her parents' families who resided there revealed the mens rea (guilty mind) behind her alleged crime, the division bench of justices AS Gadkari and Rajesh Patil said while dismissing her petition. Deeba, a resident of Margosa Heights housing society in Pune's Mohammadwadi neighbourhood, worked as a school teacher. After the Indian armed forces launched 'Operation Sindoor' on May 7, targeting alleged terror camps in Pakistan, her housing society's WhatsApp group was abuzz with congratulatory messages for the armed forces and the central government. Deeba responded to these messages by posting a laughing emoji, followed by a video ridiculing Narendra Modi. She referred to India as 'makkar' and posted a burning Indian flag as her WhatsApp status, her neighbour told the police in a complaint. Based on the neighbour's complaint, an FIR was registered against Deeba at the Kalepadal police station in Pune under sections 152 (acts endangering sovereignty, unity and integrity of India), 196 (promoting enmity between different groups), 197 (making imputations, assertions prejudicial to national integration), 352 (intentional insult with intent to provoke breach of peace) and 353 (statements conducing to public mischief) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, 2023. Deeba then approached the high court for quashing the FIR, contending that she was not in a mentally sound condition at the time as the families of both her parents were from Pakistan. As soon as she realised that a few members on the WhatsApp group were offended by her messages, she immediately deleted them and apologised to the complainant, she said in her plea. She also lost her job as a teacher due to the controversy generated by the case against her, she mentioned. Additional public prosecutor MM Deshmukh opposed the petition, saying prima facie, there was enough material to make out the alleged offences and the investigation needed to be completed and taken to its logical end. The court accepted the prosecutor's contentions, saying the petitioner, being well-educated with a masters in English and a BEd degree, should have thought about the pros and cons of her actions before posting the videos and messages. 'Though the petitioner tendered her apology to the complainant, damage had already been caused by the petitioner's messages which were circulated,' the judges said. Her acts attracted the sections she was booked under while her reference India as 'makkar' and her admission about her parents' families hailing from Pakistan were indicative of her guilty mind, the court noted, dismissing her plea.

HC lifts stay on civil prison order against builder, initiates contempt proceedings
Ahmedabad: The Gujarat high court has lifted the stay on an order by the Gujarat Real Estate Regulatory Authority (GujRERA) to detain office bearers of Pacifica Developers Pvt Ltd, including its managing director Rakesh Israni, in a 60-day civil prison. The developers were penalised for failing to hand over possession of a house to a customer and allegedly selling the same property to a third party. In addition to clearing the way for execution of the civil prison order, Justice Vaibhavi Nanavati last week referred the case to a division bench for the initiation of contempt of court proceedings against Israni, the company, and other office bearers—Darpan Tarwani, Kaushik Patel, and Jay Chandani—for making false statements before the court. "The conduct of the original petitioners in SCA No. 20527 of 2022 is contemptuous and requires action. This court deems it fit to refer the original petitioners to the bench handling contempt matters," the order reads. The court accepted the proposal and stayed the GujRERA order of civil detention. Later, Sharma's advocate, Vishal Dave, informed the court that the developers had approached the high court again and sought to withdraw their petition, stating they would instead file an appeal before the RERA appellate tribunal. The court allowed this and continued the stay on the civil detention order. However, in 2024, Sharma approached the court again, stating that the developers had never filed an appeal before the appellate tribunal and had continued to enjoy the stay order wrongfully. Justice Nanavati observed, "The aforesaid in the opinion of this court, is nothing but abuse of process of law and the said act is contemptuous in nature and in the opinion of this court, the original petitioners (builders) are jointly and severally liable for the same." While referring the matter to a division bench for contempt proceedings, the high court also ordered the release of the Rs 24 lakh deposit to Sharma.
