Forest rights cell established in Kodagu
Madikeri: A forest rights cell has been set up in Kodagu to facilitate govt schemes and provisions for the tribal population. Operating under the integrated tribal development planning department (ITDP), this new establishment will also handle Forest Rights Act matters.
ITDP project coordinator S Honnegowda said the cell has been established at the Zilla Panchayat office in Madikeri, along with similar units in other districts. He said the cell, functioning under the Union ministry of tribal affairs and scheduled caste welfare department, aims to deliver govt schemes to land rights beneficiaries under the Forest Rights Act. The cell will also create digital records of collected information.
The establishment will undertake a fresh assessment of previously rejected tribal applications under the Forest Rights Act. Honnegowda indicated that the Forest Rights Cell stands ready to provide necessary support to eligible forest dwellers through this re-examination.

The ITDP received 4,277 applications in the district this year under the Forest Rights Act. Of these, 2,430 received approval whilst 1,847 faced rejection. The forest cell will review the rejected applications as land rights are distributed to approved beneficiaries. The district has currently allocated 31,967.8 acres to eligible individuals for personal use and forest resource collection under the act, he stated.

Minister leads cleanliness drive in Dharwad
District in-charge Minister Santosh Lad led a cleanliness drive in Dharwad on Sunday, along with a team of officials. As part of the My City, Clean City campaign, officials visited 16 streets of seven wards and took up the task of cleaning, sorting and transporting garbage. Nearly 2,000 people attended the event. The Minister urged residents to join hands with the city corporation and the district administration in keeping the city clean and green. A similar drive was conducted in Hubballi a few days ago. Mr. Lad joined the pourakarmikas and other officials in cleaning the streets and sorting and loading garbage onto trucks. During the campaign, Deputy Commissioner Divya Prabhu G.R.J., Zilla Panchayat Chief Executive Officer Bhuvanesh Patil, Superintendent of Police Gopal Byakod, Municipal Commissioner Rudresh Ghali and other district-level senior officials participated along with their department and office staff. They joined hands in the Minister's dream of having a clean city and removed garbage and sewage waste under the campaign. Addressing the public and students who joined him on Mahishi Road, the Minister said that no government agency, including the city corporation, can work without the complete and meaningful cooperation of the public. 'This can happen only when every citizen feels proud that this is our city, our road and my house, will it be possible to have a clean city. We should work in such a manner that our children feel proud,' he said. He said that the Hubballi-Dharwad Municipal Corporation will initiate such campaigns every week. 'We need to instill civic sense among the citizens of the twin cities. Everyone should keep their house and the area around their house clean. They should also take care of the small stretch of road and the trees in front of their house,' he said. The campaign team visited the Railway Station and areas like Malamaddi, Vanavasi Ram Mandir, Gabbur Road, Ramanagara Hospital, Malapur Last Bus Stand, Shivaji Circle, Hebballi Agasi, Charantimath Garden, Hosayllapura Road, Paul Canteen, Sarasganga School and Jannatnagar. Residents of these areas also joined the effort. They collected waste with shovels, filled the baskets and put the garbage in the garbage tractor themselves. They collected garbage from garbage cans to shift it to the trucks. Mr. Lad requested the people not to throw non-segregated waste and rotten material in one heap. Vegetable vendors should not throw rotten vegetable into drains and in open spaces, he added. Mr. Lad got into a drain and helped workers clean it. Seeing him, other officers also joined the effort. An earthmover was brought to clear a pile of mud on the footpath. The Minister instructed officials to check the manhole covers above and below the road, empty sites filled with garbage and take immediate action against those responsible. From the front of Ramanagara Hospital to the last bus stop road of Malapur, government officials from various departments and college students cleaned the roads. Students carried placards and raised slogans like ''Our Dharwad is clean, let's protect it, let's protect it, let's protect it, let's protect it'. They also created awareness by singing songs and staging street plays. Ministry approves regularisation of Vijayapura-Mangaluru train
Mangaluru: The railway ministry has approved the South Western Railway's (SWR) proposal to regularise the services of train No. 07377/07378 Vijayapura-Mangaluru Central-Vijayapura Special, thereby bringing much relief to passengers. Dakshina Kannada MP Capt Brijesh Chowta said the long-pending demand to regularise the Vijayapura–Mangaluru train has been fulfilled. "This move will benefit patients from north Karnataka seeking medical care in Mangaluru, students pursuing education in coastal districts, and regular passengers. Much gratitude to our Union minister of railways Ashwini Vaishnaw, minister of state for railways V Somanna for enabling this," Capt Chowta wrote on social media platform X. The ministry stated in a notification dated June 27 that it approved the proposal of SWR for regularisation of 07377/ 07378 Vijayapura-Mangaluru Central Special as 17377/ 17378 Vijayapura-Mangaluru Central Express. "The above regularisation may be given effect from an early convenient date,'" the ministry stated. Passengers had to pay enhanced fares on the special (train on demand) services compared to the regular services. As per the June 27 notification, the departure timing of train No. 17378 is 4.45pm from Mangaluru Central, and will arrive in Vijayapura at 11.15am. Meanwhile, train No. 17377, Vijayapura-Mangaluru Central Express, leaves Vijayapura at 3pm to reach Mangaluru Central at 9.50am. The Vijayapura-Mangaluru Junction train was introduced in Nov 2019. Later, the special trains got cancelled during the Covid-19 pandemic. After the restoration of the services from Dec 1, 2021, the route was extended to Mangaluru Central from April 2024. The trains will have stoppages at Basavana Bagewadi Road, Alamatti, Bagalkot, Guledagudda Road, Badami, Hole Alur, Mallapur, Gadag, Annigeri, Hubballi, Yalvigi, Haveri, Byadagi, Ranebennur, Harihar, Davanagere, Chikjajur, Birur, Kadur, Arasikere, Hassan, Sakleshpur, Subrahmanya Road, Kabaka Puttur, Bantwal, and Mangaluru Junction.

Five years on, Tiruchy museum renovation still in limbo
TIRUCHY: The State Archaeology Department started renovation of Rani Mangammal's Darbar Hall, which acts as the government museum, started five years ago, but very little progress has been made so far. The museum was relocated from Cantonment to the Darbar Hall in 1998. Historians expressed concerns that hundreds of invaluable artefacts – ranging from stone sculptures and coins to palm-leaf manuscripts – that are cramped up in a single room to facilitate the renovation work could get irrevocably damaged without adequate protective measures. The State Archaeology Department approached the Union government with a proposal to restore the building, built in the 16th century by King Chokkanatha Nayak, after frescoes and decorative elements began to fade and in some places disappeared entirely. In response, the union government sanctioned Rs 3.75 crore under the Museum Grants Scheme in 2019 to renovate the hall. The first phase included cementing and interior painting, which were completed. However, due to the COVID-19 lock downs, the work came to a halt, and has not resumed. Open-air exhibits are particularly at risk. Several rare sculptures and historical objects, including a four-foot-tall Buddha statue, a 10th-century Mahaveer sculpture, 14th-century Pallava artefacts, an East India Company cannon, and idols of Hindu gods and goddesses, are exposed to the elements. Dr R Kalaikovan, director of the Dr Rajamanickanar Historical Research Centre, said his team had handed over 16 granite sculptures, including those of Buddha, Mahaveer, and Chola-period artefacts, to the museum. 'All the sculptures and artefacts must be preserved properly so this historical legacy can be passed on to future generations. If timely action is not taken, we risk losing our history,' he warned. Kalaikovan stressed that there is ample space around the hall for expansion and urged the district administration to allocate land within the premises for protective storage and display. He also opposed the proposal to shift the museum to Panjapur. 'The current location is ideal, surrounded by schools and colleges. Since the land is already government-owned, there's no need to relocate. Even the Madras Museum was expanded at its original site,' he added. Speaking to P Manimuthu, Curator of the Government Museum, told TNIE, 'We are waiting for funds to be released by the government. Once the funds are sanctioned, the work will be completed. We have already submitted the request.'
