Chelsea Head Coach Criticizes 2025 FCWC in US Weather Delays

Rana Atef
On Sunday, Chelsea head coach Enzo Maresca criticized the choice of the United States as host of the Club World Cup.
He described that two-hour weather delay in Chelsea's game against Benfica in the round-of-16 as "a joke."
The Blues will face Palmeiras after their 4-1 victory after extra time.
Chelsea were leading 1-0 through Reece James' 64th-minute free kick before Slovenian referee Slavko Vincic stopped the match due to lightning in the area with four minutes remaining.
The game was halted for two hours due to weather warnings which led the leave of the majority of the 25,929 crowd.
The game was halted in minute 84. The game resumed, Benfica were awarded a stoppage-time penalty for handball by Malo Gusto. Ángel Di María equalised from the spot to force an additional 30 minutes.
Following Benfica winger's Gianluca Prestianni's 92nd-minute red card, Christopher Nkunku, Pedro Neto and Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall all struck in extra time but Maresca was left seething about the logistical challenges.
Maresca told reporters: "We didn't concede nothing, we created chances enough to win the game."
"And then after the break, the game changed completely. I think for me personally it's not football. It's already seven, eight, nine games that they suspended. I think it's a joke to be honest, it's not football. It's not for us. You cannot be inside [for so long].
"It's completely something new but I struggle to understand. I can understand that for security reasons, you have to suspend the game. But if you suspend seven, eight games, that means that probably is not the right place to do this competition."
Pushed on whether the stoppages were damaging for the competition, Maresca continued: "Please, don't misunderstand me. I said it's a fantastic competition. It's a Club World Cup. It's top. We are happy to be in the last eight. We are happy to win all these kind of things.
"But something happens, six, seven games suspended, probably the one[s] that they decide, they need a reason, because it's not normal to suspend a game. In a World Cup, how many games are suspended? Zero, probably. In Europe, how many games? Zero.
"We are here, two weeks, they're already suspended six, seven games. There is some problem for me personally.
"But I'm talking as a manager. Because when you are two hours inside, you try to keep them in the game, but for two hours, they are speaking with the family outside for safety reasons. They are eating something, they are playing, they are laughing. How can you keep them two hours inside, focused? It's a joke.
"That's why I said it. Then we are happy. We are happy to be here. We are happy to be in this competition. But it's something that is not normal."

Saudi Arabia's great football experiment is paying off spectacularly at the Club World Cup

The oil-rich kingdom, which is spending billions of dollars to become a major player in the world's most popular sport, scored a big win on the field Monday when Al Hilal beat Premier League giant Manchester City 4-3 to advance to the quarterfinals. It was a seismic result in football terms; possibly the biggest upset of the tournament and precisely the type of statement Saudi Arabia has wanted to make since embarking on a project that will ultimately see it stage the World Cup in 2034. 'We wanted to show that Al Hilal has the talent, the power to be here,' said defender Kalidou Koulibaly, who was among a slew of star players paid fortunes to leave Europe's top clubs for the Saudi Pro League in recent years. Superstar signings and ones that got away The biggest of them all was Cristiano Ronaldo, who completed one of the most stunning moves in football history when joining Al Nassr for a reported salary of up to $200 million a year in 2022. That deal prompted a spectacular recruitment drive by Saudi teams — backed by the kingdom's sovereign wealth fund — and in came superstars like Neymar and Karim Benzema, while audacious attempts were made to sign Lionel Messi and Kylian Mbappe. Confirmation that Saudi Arabia had won the right to host the World Cup came in December. On the field, the Club World Cup was the first chance for the country to make a global statement about the growth of its domestic game, which is largely unheralded outside of Asia. It is likely why Al Hilal — Saudi Arabia's most successful team — was so eager to make another marquee signing before the tournament began and tried, but failed, to lure Manchester United captain Bruno Fernandes. It pulled off a coup by hiring coach Simone Inzaghi. The Italian arrived after leading Inter Milan to a second Champions League final in three seasons and he is already making a mark with his new team after drawing 1-1 against Real Madrid in the group stage and then beating City. 'We had to do something extraordinary because we knew how good Manchester City are, we knew we had to climb Mount Everest without oxygen, and we were great," Inzaghi said. Saudi Arabian football has faced doubts The broader picture is what Al Hilal's run says about the standard of football in Saudi Arabia, which has been dismissed by some as a cash grab for players, who can earn far more than if they'd remained in Europe. 'Let's see now if they will criticize us after these games," said midfielder Sergej Milinkovic-Savic, who joined Al Hilal from Italian team Lazio. 'It's not like how they are speaking about the league.' Despite recruiting so many players from Europe's top clubs — including Champions League winners N'Golo Kante, Riyad Mahrez and Roberto Firmino — it is difficult to judge the quality of the Saudi League. To put Al Hilal's run into context: while it may have won a record 19 league titles and four Asian championships, it is not the Saudi Arabia's reigning national champion, having been beaten to the title by Benzema's Al-Ittihad last season. Another Saudi team, Al-Ahli, which counts former Liverpool forward Firmino and ex Manchester City winger Mahrez among its players, won the Asian Champions League this year. Ronaldo, meanwhile, is yet to win the title in three attempts with Al Nassr — pointing to the depth of strength in the league. Al Hilal's performances have also come despite releasing Brazil great Neymar in January and with leading scorer Aleksandar Mitrovic having played no part so far because of injury. Can Al Hilal win the Club World Cup? The question now is how far Al Hilal can go. Next up is Brazil's Fluminense in the quarterfinals in Orlando on Friday. City's exit — along with Inter Milan's defeat to Fluminense — has opened up that side of the draw, which also features Palmeiras and Chelsea. On paper it looks like the favorable side of the draw, with Real Madrid, Bayern Munich and Paris Saint-Germain on the other side. But the success of Brazilian teams has been another theme of the tournament and Al Hilal will have to beat at least one more if it is to advance to the final. Inzaghi, however, is used to overachieving. His two Champions League finals with Inter Milan came despite having an aging team and relying on savvy deals in the transfer market to pick up free agents and veteran players. Inter's victory against Barcelona in the semifinals of this year's competition was one of the all-time classic contests — winning 7-6 on aggregate. Al Hilal's impressive run has come after Inzaghi spent just one week training with the team before the tournament. Even if it is eliminated in the next round, a quarterfinals appearance would represent an outstanding campaign for a team that was not expected to compete for the title. Sportswashing accusations remain Saudi Arabia's growing influence on sport — which also includes LIV Golf, world championship boxing, F1 and the buyout of Premier League team Newcastle — will continue to raise accusations it is 'sportswashing' its reputation. Amnesty international called it 'reckless' to grant it the World Cup over concerns about the country's human rights record. But its investment in sport is undoubtedly paying off and Al Hilal's run is succeeding in raising the profile of its football league. Monaco signs former teen prodigy Fati on season's loan from Barcelona - World

Monaco signed Ansu Fati on a season-long loan from Barcelona on Tuesday, offering the former teen prodigy another chance to resurrect his career. Related Monaco close in on Fati loan signing from Barcelona Monaco said the loan deal for the 22-year-old forward includes an option to buy at the end of the season. Fati burst onto the scene with Barcelona in 2019-20 season. At the age of 16 years and 304 days in August 2019, he became the club's youngest scorer in the Spanish league. Nearly four months later, at the age of 17 years and 40 days, he became the youngest goalscorer in Champions League history. Fati would set other records — he previously held the record as Spain's youngest ever scorer — with his reputation growing as a quick and tricky right winger with an eye for goal. He was predicted to become a world superstar in much the same way as 17-year-old Lamine Yamal is now with Barcelona and Spain. Like Yamal, he also had great versatility, offering him the possibility to operate as a second striker or by dropping deep in the 'false nine' role. But the Guinea-Bissau born forward then experienced a series of injuries which impacted his confidence and form. He played only a handful of games for Barcelona in the past two seasons and spent part of the 2023-24 season on loan to Premier League club Brighton, scoring four goals in 27 games. Fati netted 29 goals in 123 games overall for Barcelona and scored twice for Spain in 10 matches. He appeared fleetingly at the 2022 World Cup and has not played for the national team since 2023. Fati's arrival follows the signing of former France midifleder Paul Pogba on a two-year deal and strengthens coach Adi Hütter's attack. Pogba and Fati should add more versatility and extra firepower to an attack containing the prolific Mika Biereth and skilful US forward Folarin Balogun. ___ (For more sports news and updates, follow Ahram Online Sports on Twitter at @AO_Sports and on Facebook at AhramOnlineSports.) Al Hilal Earns Over USD 33 Million in Club World Cup Windfall

Following a dramatic 4-3 win over Manchester City and qualification to the quarter-finals, Al Hilal has earned over USD 33 million in Club World Cup prize money. Al Hilal SC has secured prize over USD 33 million in prize money following its qualification to the quarter-finals of the FIFA Club World Cup in the United States. The club earned USD 9.5 million for participating in the tournament, with an additional USD 2 million awarded for a victory against Mexico's Pachuca. Two draws, one with Spain's Real Madrid and another with Austria's Red Bull Salzburg, added USD 1 million each to the tally. Advancement to the Round of 16 contributed a further USD 7.5 million, while qualification to the quarter-finals provided the largest financial reward yet at USD 13 million. The financial windfall followed a dramatic 4–3 victory over Manchester City in a match that extended into extra time. Manchester City opened the scoring in the 9th minute through Bernardo Silva, but Al Hilal responded with goals from Marcos Leonardo and Malcom early in the second half. City equalised with a strike from Erling Haaland in the 55th minute, concluding regular time at 2–2. In extra time, Kalidou Koulibaly restored Al Hilal's lead in the 94th minute, only for Phil Foden to equalise once again in the 104th. Leonardo then scored the decisive goal late in extra time after a rebound. Controversy arose over a goal scored by Silva, which drew protests from Al Hilal players who claimed a handball by Rayan Ait-Nouri during the buildup. The referee upheld the goal after a VAR review, confirming its validity despite visible objections.
