BBC drama that 'perfectly encapsulated grief' celebrated by fans 9 years later

Metro2 days ago
It's been almost a decade since Phoebe Waller-Bridge's groundbreaking BBC drama Fleabag offered one of the most poignant explorations of grief on TV.
The Emmy-winning show started as a one-woman show at Edinburgh Fringe Festival before making the leap to the small screen in 2016, with the first episode airing on July 21.
The fourth-wall-breaking show stars Phoebe as the titular Fleabag who is navigating the complicated and sudden loss of her best friend Boo (Jenny Rainsford).
As she navigates this trauma, we meet the people who make up her small, and chaotic, world, including her uptight sister Claire (Sian Clifford), her snooty stepmum Matrigna (Olivia Colman) and, later on in the show, the man she falls in love with but can never have – Andrew Scott's (Hot) Priest.
The two-season comedy has built a loyal fanbase over the years and, with its regular inclusion in people's favourite shows of all time, it is also constantly being discovered by new viewers.
Praised for its wit and surprising depth, fans are reminiscing on just what made the show so good – from its fundamental understanding of bereavement to its ability to flesh out flawed characters.
During one scene, when Fleabag is describing the heaviness of Boo's loss, she explains: 'I don't know what to do with it. With all the love I have for her.I don't know where to put it now.'
Sharing this moment on X, user @moralgrey simply wrote: 'When fleabag perfectly encapsulated grief.'
Another user, @weirdnelipit, added: 'genuinely, my favourite one was this whole boo and fleabag conversation after her mom died,
'Like it sparked a new layer of understanding of grief & all of our unconditional love for someone & the closest people we have will always be on our side.. a love that will always remain.'
'Thank you Fleabag for one of the most beautiful depictions of grief,' chaoticguitar echoed.
'Fleabag summed up a lot of the grief we feel after a loved ones death in this scene,' Layal Shakeir agreed.
Over on Reddit, fans were in agreement about the show's impact.
User sgt-snuggles wrote: 'I didn't truly see it on first watch but Fleabag really has such a unique and real portrayal of grief. When I rewatched it after losing someone close I felt like I was seeing it through different lenses.
'The desperation to be close to people while pushing away real closeness, the fear of confronting how everything truly feels, it's so real and beautifully shown in such a deep yet silly manner.'
'The spiraling, confusing, messy grief is so well displayed in Fleabag with Boo. It's cold and snowy out, so I'm going to make beef stew and watch Fleabag and cry and drink wine,' soup-creature echoed.
This was not the only moment fans were profoundly moved by.
For many, the highlight of the show is the portrayal of sisterhood in all its messiness, and more importantly, all its unconditional love.
'I'm so grateful for the depiction of Claire and Fleabag's relationship — the ugliness and heartbreak and enormity of love and care. how different they're & how they choose to stick with each other,' @apparitionow said.
In one scene, Claire tells Fleabag that she's the only person she would run through an airport for in a bid to do a grand gesture (typically reserved for romance).
'Portrayal of the sibling relationship in Fleabag still remains one of my favourite aspects of the show. As someone who has always struggled to verbalise her love for her sibling, this bit was like a eureka moment for me,' d_majumdar92.
Other highlights include the heartwrenching exchange in which Fleabag confesses her love for Priest, only to be told 'it'll pass'. Or when Priest is the only one to 'ask her a question in 45 minutes'. Or when he's the only one who can break the fourth wall with her.
For @alison_epp, these moments were an 'absolute surprising and beautiful way to show someone truly being seen'. More Trending
Another fan shared their love for the scene when Fleabag is talking with an older woman who has been through menopause, Belinda, who delivers a layered monologue about 'women being born with pain built in' and the freedom you find in your later years.
If you haven't watched Fleabag, then let this new milestone be your sign to watch it. You won't regret it.

Toyah Willcox weighs in on Gregg Wallace and John Torode's MasterChef sacking after working with the 'lovely' presenters on BBC show

Toyah Willcox has weighed in on John Torode and Gregg Wallace 's MasterChef sacking drama, after previously working with them both on the show. Australian-born chef John, 59, lost his job on the BBC show after two decades over allegations that he used the N-word, which he claims to have 'absolutely no recollection' of. Meanwhile, Gregg, 60, was sacked after more than 40 complaints against him were upheld following a BBC investigation. Now, Toyah has opened up about her time on Celebrity MasterChef and her interactions with the recently axed Gregg and John. Speaking on the Spooning With Mark Wogan podcast, she said: 'I did MasterChef with both Gregg and John and they were divine. They were lovely to be with. 'I've not seen what they're supposed to have done, but it doesn't mean they didn't do it. I just don't know, and I'm very protective towards women, especially having done Strictly a year after Amanda Abbington had what happened to her. I want to support Amanda and I also want to work, so...' Mark, the son of Sir Terry Wogan, replied: 'Isn't that funny though that you still feel that by openly supporting women you threaten your ability to continue working? Well that's what I'm picking up from what you just said.' Amanda's last 18 months have been dominated by the fallout over her time with professional dancer Giovanni Pernice on Strictly Come Dancing, which saw her leave the show after just six weeks, citing 'personal reasons'. The actress then accused him of 'unnecessary, cruel and mean behaviour' in July last year. Giovanni rejected the claims immediately and a BBC investigation ruled in September that her claims of physical aggression and threatening behaviour were not upheld. Complaints of verbal bullying and harassment meant the corporation issued an apology but the dancer said he was 'pleased the report has not found any evidence of threatening or abusive behaviour'. Toyah supported Amanda throughout, and added: 'When I did Strictly, I was very vocal about my support for Amanda and that she needed to be seen. And I don't know if that went against me when I was on the show, but you can't whitewash and put things like that behind you. 'They need to be addressed, and the World keeps on moving. So I'm really part of the World keeps on moving movement, but I just make sure what I see is not history repeating itself.' Mark responded: 'You came to fame at a time similar to [my] Dad, you know 70s and 80s both of you household names. 'With what's gone on in the papers this week, I got a phone call this week from an old mate of mine who just goes, "Was your dad the only person at the BBC who isn't a weirdo?" And you kind of go, you know, "Yeah, maybe!"' Competing in what was the first series of the re-booted programme, Toyah made it all the way to the quarter-finals before fans of the show saw Matt Dawson walking away as winner of the competition after seeing off Roger Black and Hardeep Singh Kohli in the final. It comes after new reports have claimed the BBC sacked John Torode after he allegedly 'used the N-word twice while singing along to a Kanye West song'. The MasterChef host was reportedly singing the rapper's hit Gold Digger when he was allegedly 'caught using the racist term during after work drinks six or seven years ago'. The Sun claims Torode used the word again whilst chatting to a friend on the MasterChef production team, who didn't take offence. The Australian-born chef has insisted 'he had absolutely no recollection' of using a racist term while drinking with colleagues seven years ago. The person who raised the complaint is understood to have 'overheard the conversation'. The production pal allegedly backed Torode and said he only used the racial slur as an 'example' and 'apologised afterwards'. MailOnline has contacted BBC and Torode's representatives for comment. A witness told investigators he had apologised immediately, 'was mortified' and 'didn't use the term as a slur' in 2018. The Australian-born chef has insisted 'he had absolutely no recollection' of using a racist term while drinking with colleagues seven years ago The BBC said that Torode's contract would not be renewed after a report found he had used an 'extremely offensive racist term' during an evening out after filming the show. The corporation has refused to say what the racist term was - as has Torode, who has claimed he did 'not believe that it happened'. But it was described as the 'worst racial slur there is' by Richard Osman, who added of the investigation: 'They found that to be substantively true. They found evidence that they were happy with - that that was true'. The Times claimed that two people 'close to the report' alleged that Torode had used the N-word. There has also been feverish speculation online for days that this was the slur he allegedly used. Torode has left MasterChef after an allegation of using racist language was upheld against him. He faced nine allegations of poor behaviour between 2012 and 2019. Investigators said of the other eight that two could not be substantiated and there was insufficient evidence in the remaining six. One insider told MailOnline on Thursday that there was 'relief' at MasterChef HQ that Torode is gone, saying he was 'horrible' to work with at times. A third source claimed they had found him to be a 'very rude and patronising man'. Torode was sacked after being accused of saying the 'worst racial slur there is' Torode said this week, after his sacking, in a lengthy statement posted to Instagram: 'Although I haven't heard from anyone at the BBC or Banijay – I am seeing and reading that I've been "sacked" from MasterChef and I repeat that I have no recollection of what I'm accused of.' It was also claimed the BBC and Banijay had asked Torode to leave MasterChef citing mental health problems. The BBC declined to comment on the claims.

Edinburgh Fringe 2025 Hot Tickets: Here are 31 four and five star comedians returning this August - from Garry Star to Amy Gledhill

It's very nearly August, which means it's time to scour the Edinbugh Festival Fringe programme for the best shows to see. The physical programme has over 3,350 shows across 265 venues, meaning it can be a daunting task to work out what exactly you are going to see. While it's fun to take a punt and hope for the best, it's sometimes nice to go for a known quantity - a performer who has delivered acclaimed shows in the past. At The Scotsman we review hundreds of shows every year, with the best receiving a sought-after four or five star rating. While previous success is no guarantee that they will deliver the goods again, it's as good an indicator as any - particularly since many of the shows in Edinburgh have never been performed before. So, here are all 31 returning comedians who earned a four or five review from us in 2024 - and what we said about their shows. 1 . Amy Gledhill: Make Me Look Fit On The Poster Amy Gledhill is returning this year for two performances only of last year's Edinburgh Comedy Award-winning show. What we said: "Amy Gledhill is a woman in possession of a treasure trove of funny stories from her life – and boy, does she know how to animate them." (Four stars). | Contributed Photo Sales 2 . Amy Mason: Behold! What we said about last year's show: "A wonderful example of belated, begrudging self-acceptance channelled into a consistently very funny performance." (Four Stars) | Contributed Photo Sales 3 . Ania Magliano: Work in Progress What we said last year: "Ania Magliano has taken a huge step. She's moved in with her lovely boyfriend - the first time she's lived with someone. And it's going quite well. But this being an Ania Magliano show, there is more to this." (Four Stars) | Contributed Photo Sales 4 . Chloe Petts Chloe Petts has two shows at this year's Fringe - 'Big Naturals' and 'Miscellaneous'. What we said about lasat year's show: "The charismatic comic demonstrates her wide appeal with a range of great material, from her woeful school education about sapphic relationships to this being the golden age of the butch lesbian."
