SEDIBENG.- At last! In case you don't know, the news is that Vaal will be represented in the semi-professional league once again.
This is a dream come true for many local football supporters. It is like God heard their cry.
Ladies and gentlemen, let's put our hands together and congratulate Young Pirates FC as they will campaign in the ABC Motsepe League in the 2025/2026 season. The latter made the Vaal proud when they became the Gauteng champions at the Inter-Regional play-offs held in Pretoria over the weekend.

For a long time, Zakes' Sports Corner pleaded for this to happen, and somebody's heard my prayers at last! What else can Zakes' Sports Corner ask for? Of course, this is something to celebrate, considering how long it took this region to have a team in the ABC Motsepe League. Can somebody bring a bottle of champagne to celebrate this remarkable achievement?
Gone are the days when teams from outside the Vaal would come to enjoy the freedom of our facilities because we didn't have a team that played at this level. It is the Vaal people's responsibility to support Young Pirates FC. This club is now the pride of the Vaal, to say the least! Gone are the days when we would be called the sleeping giants of South African football.
This region was called the sleeping giants of South African football after the now defunct Vaal Professional relegated from the top-flight football.
This region was without top-flight football for years, and now, at least, Young Pirates will represent us in the second division league, which is regarded as one of the competitive leagues in South African football.
This is despite the great players and football administrators this region produced in the past. Those with long memories will remember the par excellence football this region produced in George 'Kid Action' Thabe and Dr Molefi Oliphant, to mention a few.
Zakes' Sports Corner wants to join the thousands of Vaal football people to congratulate Young Pirates for their promotion to the ABC Motsepe League. It was long overdue, shame!

Lando Norris delivered a superb final flying lap in his McLaren on Saturday to end Max Verstappen's run of domination in qualifying at the Red Bull Ring by claiming pole position for the Austrian Grand Prix. Johannesburg teen to represent SA at Youth World Climbing Championships in Finland
Roux Wentzel (14) from Helpmekaar Kollege in Johannesburg has recently been chosen to represent the South African Protea Climbing team at the International Federation of Sport Climbing Youth World Climbing Championships in July in Helsinki, Finland. The climber who began the sport two years ago said his latest accolade is a silver medal he received from last year's national championships, Rosebank Killarney Gazette reports. Roux explained the process of being selected: 'To be selected to compete at the Youth World Championships, you have to make the podium at the Youth World Championship selection event that was held in Johannesburg this year. 'For speed climbing specifically, you also have to make a cut-off time that depends on your category.' The climber said that because it would be his first year competing internationally, he did not have any goals in terms of how far he wanted to rank, but simply wanted to climb faster than he ever had and enjoy the experience.

According to reports, the players boycotted a number of training sessions during the week as they had some outstanding payments. It's something that's not new in South African football. Prior to the previous tournament, in Morocco like this year's one, the players went on strike to let SAFA know they were not happy with the bonuses they would be getting for being at the competition. It was an ugly saga that never should have happened. To their credit, the team rose above the storm and came back home with the trophy. But that's a bit of a stretch. Addressing the situation, SAFA vice-president Linda Zwane said they had dealt with it 'swiftly.' 'It was made known to us. It's a minor issue. The payments of the previous games that they played, particularly the Malawi game, which the association had undertaken to address – that particular matter. 'So, there is an agreement that has been reached with the team through their captain [Refiloe Jane]. As far as we are concerned, that particular matter is now buried. The association has made commitments to address that, making sure that players continue with preparations.' That things got this far suggests SAFA care very little about the women's game. There is also the issue with head coach Desiree Ellis' contract, which has yet to be renewed after expiring in 2024. SAFA say 'the contract is in place but awaits guidance from the technical committee on a reappointment.' Surely this is something that should have been dealt with last year when they knew her contract would be up soon. It's hard to shake the feeling that Banyana Banyana's success is being taken for granted. The players have proven time and again that they can rise above adversity, but they shouldn't have to. If SAFA are serious about progress and pride in the women's game, then it must start treating these champions with the respect, planning, and professionalism they've more than earned. Anything less sends a clear message – that even triumph on the continental stage isn't enough to earn the basic dignity of proper support. South African football cannot continue to rely on the resilience of its women while failing them behind the scenes.
