Sir Mark Cavendish ‘proud' to have Douglas cycle track named in his honour

The winner of a record 35 Tour de France stages was back home in Douglas on the Isle of Man, where the cycle track at the National Sports Centre where he first started racing as a child was renamed the Sir Mark Cavendish Raceway.
On the track where he used to compete every Tuesday night during his youth, Cavendish, who retired from racing at the end of last season, joined local schoolchildren on a ride as a new podium and signage was unveiled.
'When I was young, I would always be smashing it around that half-mile circuit,' Cavendish told the PA news agency. 'It was always fun, it was always something I would look forward to, and it taught me how to race.
'This is where I started, where every Isle of Man rider started racing, so it's very sentimental. It's not just like having something named after me – I'm very proud to have it at the place that started and shaped my career. It's truly an honour, it really means something on a personal level.'
Cavendish used to revel in the weekly races run at the venue by Dot Tilbury, who remains a fixture at the National Sports Centre.
Tilbury helped launch the careers of Cavendish, former Team Sky rider Pete Kennaugh and Commonwealth Games bronze medallist Mark Christian, but the sessions she runs have been about more than finding future professionals.
'Cycling is fundamentally built on community and volunteers,' Cavendish said when asked about her contribution. 'That's what I loved about it. That's what got me started.
'It doesn't matter where you're from or what you do, everyone is joined by this single love, which is the bicycle – whether it's racing, using it for transport or for fitness.
'Historically club racing here in the Isle of Man and the UK in general takes a community who just love it, love seeing the racing and love what the bike is about. Without them these things don't exist and I think we need to treasure that.'

Richard Carapaz ruled out of Tour de France with stomach bug

Richard Carapaz, the reigning Tour de France king of the mountains, will miss this year's race after developing a gastrointestinal infection training at home in Ecuador. 'Last week, he began experiencing abdominal pain and a high fever,' his EF team said on their website. '[Doctors] have advised against long-haul travel and competition at this time. As a result, Richard will not take part in this year's Tour de France.' Carapaz finished third in the Giro d'Italia this month and would have led the EF Pro Cycling team in the Tour, which starts on 5 July. 'We're all gutted for Richard,' said Jonathan Vaughters, the EF chief. 'He came out of the Giro with amazing form. He sacrificed a lot to get to that level, so the timing really couldn't be worse. We know how much the Tour means to him, so to lose him this close to the race is a real blow.' Carapaz, the 2020 Olympic champion and 2019 Giro winner, won the climbing and combativity prizes in last year's Tour de France. The team said that the 32-year-old 'will take a few weeks off to let his body fully recover' and then shift his focus to the least prestigious of the Grand Tours starting on 23 August. 'His goal? Win the Vuelta a España,' said the team.

Rumours on social media have suggested that the duo's relationship goes further than the court this week, but Raducanu has been quick to shut down the chatter. When asked about it in her pre-Wimbledon press conference, the British star said while giggling: "We're just good friends". Raducanu is jumping at the idea of teaming up with the World No2, who is hot off the heels of winning the French Open earlier this month. "But for me, when he asked me, I was going to say yes, I just had to kind of go through the formality of asking my coach, so I didn't just make the decision." On how they became friends, Raducanu added: "I've known him for years. "And actually in Wimbledon 2021 it was like kind of the first time I started getting to know him, and I had a good run there and then also again in the US Open in 2021. 3 Rumours have begun to swirl about the dynamic between Alcaraz and Raducanu Credit: Getty "And I remember he was always playing the day before me and I was playing like the second day of the round. "And I would see him win and then I would have motivation to win and get myself into that position too." Further lifting the lid on her connection with Alcaraz, Raducanu went on: "We have a good relationship still. He's obviously overtaken me a lot, but it's nice that we have that from a while ago. "I think for all of us, we really kind of value those connections that we had from when we were young because when you become a bit more known or a bit more successful, you just find yourself reverting back to people you knew from a young age because you're like, that's a real genuine connection. "Because it becomes very busy and you have a lot more friends but the ones that you've known for a long time mean a lot more to you." Both Raducanu and Alcaraz will have their full focus on Wimbledon for now, with first-round action getting underway at the All England Club on Monday. Raducanu will open her account with a clash against fellow Brit, Mingge Xu. While Alcaraz will launch his defence of his 2024 title against Italian Fabio Fognini.

British number one Jack Draper ready to carry hopes of a nation at Wimbledon

He was upset in the second round last year by compatriot Cameron Norrie in Murray's final appearance at Wimbledon but since then has reached the US Open semi-finals and won his first Masters 1000 title in Indian Wells. 'Obviously when Andy retired, they said I was the next in line,' said Draper. 'I know it's Wimbledon coming up, but I think I didn't really think about it then, and I've improved so much and put myself in this position. 'I'll do my best to keep trying and improving, to show my best tennis out there, to hopefully present myself as the player and the person I want to be. 'Obviously Andy has done an unbelievable job of that and has been incredibly successful and has become adored by the nation. It's obviously big shoes to fill. I'm aware of that. At the same time I'm confident in myself that hopefully I can inspire people like Andy has done.' Draper is a good friend of Murray but he has not yet leaned too much on either the Scot's or predecessor Tim Henman's many years of experience of being the great British hope. Jack Draper is the only British player seeded at Wimbledon (John Walton/PA) 'I haven't spoken to them too much, in all honesty, but I know they're there if I need them,' said Draper, who is the only seed among 23 British singles hopefuls. 'Obviously, everyone has a different way of dealing with their emotions and dealing with things. 'Andy has given me an amazing amount of feedback and advice over the years. I think one of the biggest things is everyone is on their different journey. 'He also said he doesn't like to interfere. I think he's very reluctant to comment on anything to do with me because he understands what it's like to be in this position, to have people asking me stuff all the time about things. 'I know Andy's right there for me if I need him anytime. There may come a point where I ask him a few things, and I'm sure he'll come back and be extremely helpful and supportive, as always.' Draper starts his campaign against Sebastian Baez of Argentina (Martin Rickett/PA) Draper's prospects do not appear to have been helped by a brutal draw that put his French Open conqueror Alexander Bublik, young star Jakub Mensik, Novak Djokovic and Jannik Sinner all in his path. But the fourth seed is not yet looking past his first-round opponent, Argentina's Sebastian Baez. 'I haven't looked at that at all,' he said. 'I look at my first round, who I have. I respect every person in the draw. Obviously I've got Baez on Tuesday, and I'm not looking further than that. 'I know he's a strong player. He's here off his own merit. I look no further than him. I try and think about that as I go on. But, firstly, we'll start with that one.'
