Ploughing and harvesting incentives for farmers by July 31 in Malaysia
PUTRAJAYA: The government will ensure that all payments for the ploughing and harvesting incentives to farmers are completed by 31 July, said Agriculture and Food Security Minister Datuk Seri Mohamad Sabu.
In a statement today, he said the total amount of the incentive was RM210, comprising RM160 for ploughing and RM50 for harvesting.
He added that the matter had been discussed at the Cabinet Committee on National Food Security Policy (FSCC) Meeting 1/2025, chaired by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, on June 16.
'The meeting focused on strategic initiatives to strengthen the country's food security and boost the growth of the agriculture and agro-food sectors.
'Various other initiatives were also discussed, including strategies to increase the country's self-sufficiency rate (SSR) for beef and buffalo meat to ensure the sustainability of the national food supply,' he said.
The Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security (KPKM), on 11 June, announced an increase in the ploughing incentive rate and introduced a harvesting incentive, providing total cash assistance of RM210 per hectare to padi farmers each season, benefiting around 130,000 farmers across the peninsula.
Mohamad also said the government welcomed the development of the Malaysian Food Composition Database (MyFCD) as a strategic component of the National Food Security Policy.
He said the meeting had also agreed in principle to explore effective strategies to reduce dependence on grain corn imports to ensure the industry's sustainability and growth.
'In addition, the proposed amendment to the Protection of New Plant Varieties Act 2004 (Act 634) will be implemented to provide more comprehensive protection for new plant varieties,' he said.
Mohamad said policy planning would continue to be strengthened based on the findings of the 2024 Agricultural Census Interim Report for the agricultural sector's growth.
He said that, as part of efforts to modernise the agricultural sector, the strategic cooperation between KPKM and the Civil Aviation Authority of Malaysia would be enhanced with the introduction of the Remote Pilot Certificate of Competency – Agriculture Light (RCoC-AL) syllabus for private unmanned aircraft system.

Agriculture TVET graduates' marketability rate at 81.23pct
SHAH ALAM: The marketability rate of Agriculture Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) graduates under the Agriculture and Food Security Ministry (KPKM) rose to 81.23 per cent last year from 78.1 per cent in 2023. Agriculture and Food Security Minister Datuk Seri Mohamad Sabu said the average has been on an upward trend for the past five years even though it remains under the national average, and that TVET is viewed as a catalyst as it nurtures young talent who are not only skilled in theories but excel in practical applications. "In line with the Industrial Revolution 4.0, the agriculture sector requires a new approach to boost productivity, especially through robotic technology, Internet of Things (IoT), and artificial intelligence (AI), with minimum resources. "Modern agriculture is no longer about hoes and soil but I'm sure TVET students understand it is about high technology, automation, drones and smart farming to ensure future security," he said during his speech at the Agriculture TVET@KPKM Carnival here today. The programme brought together 460 agriculture TVET students and over 200 employees from 16 TVET training institutes from the country and introduced 45 new innovations. For Sijil Kemahiran Malaysia (SKM), the highest marketability rate for graduates was in the poultry field, with 100 per cent, followed by ruminant field and small machinery maintenance, at 93.2 per cent and 92.3 per cent respectively, while catch fishery and padi production both had the same marketability rate, at 91.7 per cent, he said. "Currently the ministry has produced 25,783 graduates since the National Agriculture Skill Training Programme began in 1969. "We hope that with the additional skilled labour in the field, we can boost the national agrofood industry competitiveness in the global market and ensure the continued food supply for the country," he said. – Bernama

Crop and livestock supply stable despite hot weather in Malaysia
SHAH ALAM: The supply of crops and livestock across Malaysia remains stable despite the prolonged hot and dry weather triggered by the Southwest Monsoon, according to the Agriculture and Food Security Ministry (KPKM). Minister Datuk Seri Mohamad Sabu stated that the ministry has not received any significant reports of major supply disruptions. While some weather-related complaints have surfaced, they remain isolated and manageable. 'Overall, disruptions are minimal and the situation remains under control,' he said after launching the Agriculture Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) @KPKM carnival here today. The Malaysian Meteorological Department (MetMalaysia) earlier confirmed that the Southwest Monsoon, which began on May 10, is expected to persist until September. Separately, Mohamad highlighted the coconut industry's potential as a key economic driver, similar to pineapples. He noted increasing demand for both mature coconuts, actively cultivated in Sabah, and young coconuts, particularly from China. 'The crop is expected to generate impressive export value, just like pineapples, which have surpassed RM1 billion in sales,' he said. Mohamad previously commended the Malaysian Pineapple Industry Board (LPNM) for boosting production and export growth in the sector.
