JNU to conduct entrance exam for two PhD courses not covered under UGC-NET, check details
Jawaharlal Nehru University will conduct its own entrance exam - JNUEE - for admissions in PhD courses for Korean Studies and Cinema Studies, which are not covered under the UGC-NET, while admissions for all other doctoral degree courses will be based on NET scores. According to university sources, the decision to hold JNUEE for these two programmes was taken by the respective schools.
"All the deans have accepted and signed the process. This decision is their own, not of the vice chancellor or the administration," said a source, adding that the university's structure is decentralised and democratic.
The administration noted that exams like NET-JRF and CUET are more inclusive and widely accessible.
"Earlier, JNUEE was held at about 80 centres, while NET-JRF is now conducted at over 200 and CUET at around 500," an official said, highlighting that JNU's publication record is increasing by 5 per cent annually.
However, JNUSU President Nitish Kumar told PTI, "This is because there are no NET subjects for these two programmes. That is why the administration has to conduct entrance exam for these two subjects."
Meanwhile, the JNU Students' Union continues its indefinite hunger strike for the fifth day, demanding the reinstatement of JNUEE for all PhD programmes.
A scheduled meeting with the vice chancellor on Tuesday was postponed without further notice. The protest began last Thursday after the release of the PhD admission schedule for the academic year 2025-26.

Former JNUSU members fined for hunger strike
New Delhi: Jawaharlal Nehru University has issued disciplinary notices to the former members of its students' union ( JNUSU ), imposing fines of up to Rs 15,000 for their participation in a hunger strike on campus earlier this year against a controversial fine policy introduced by the administration. According to the notices issued on Thursday, former JNUSU president Dhananjay, general secretary Priyanshi Arya and joint secretary Mohammad Sajid have each been fined Rs 15,000 while former vice-president Avijit Ghosh has been fined Rs 5,000. Jawaharlal Nehru University's VC Santishree Dhulipudi Pandit directed TOI's query to Dean of Students Manuradha Chaudhary, but there was no immediate response from her. These actions were deemed violations under several categories of JNU's statutes, including disrupting administrative functioning, coercive protests and defacing property. The notice also mentions the university has taken a "somewhat lenient view" considering the students' academic future. They have been asked to submit the fines within 10 days from the issuance of the notice. In March this year, a hunger strike led by JNUSU was held at the Dean of Students Welfare's office over various demands, including withdrawal of the university's recently notified disciplinary rules that prescribe penalties of up to Rs 20,000 and possible rustication for protests, "anti-national" slogan shouting, and other forms of dissent.

Dole drums
It's the time to please all the people, at least this one time. As assembly election nears, Bihar chief minister Nitish Kumar has set off a volley of welfare steps, each tailored to a distinct vote bloc. The big one came on June 24, as his cabinet nearly trebled monthly social security pensions: from Rs 400 to Rs 1,100. Ordinarily a stickler for protocol, Nitish didn't wait this time. On June 21, he announced the enhanced pension would start getting credited to over 10.9million beneficiary accounts by July.

Eknath Shinde's ‘Jai Gujarat' at Amit Shah event fuels row over Marathi pride
Amid the ongoing controversy over the assault of a shopkeeper by MNS workers, Maharashtra Deputy chief minister Eknath Shinde on Friday ended his speech with "Jai Gujarat" though after raising the slogan 'Jai Maharashtra'. ( Praful Gangurde /HT photo) Shinde, who was speaking at an event in Pune, lauded Home Minister Amit Shah and ended his speech with this sequence of slogans: 'Jai Hind, Jai Maharashtra, Jai Gujarat.' Shinde's remark received flak from the opposition with NCP (SP) leader Clyde Crasto, who targeted the deputy CM accusing him of being 'greedy for power' as Amit Shah and PM Narendra Modi belong to Gujarat. Also Read: CM Fadnavis on Marathi row: 'Won't tolerate hooliganism in the name of language' But Maharashtra CM Devendra Fadnavis defended Shinde. "Just because Shinde said 'Jai Gujarat', it doesn't mean that Shinde loves Gujarat more than Maharashtra. Such parochial thinking doesn't behove Marathi people,' Fadnavis told reporters. The slogan row comes also after viral videos showed workers of Raj Thackeray's Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) thrashing shopkeepers in Mumbai for allegedly refusing to speak in Marathi. Fadnavis, while responding to questions about that, said that Marathi should be respected, but beating anyone will not be tolerated. The chief minister, during a press conference, also said that "hooliganism" in the name of Marathi would not be tolerated. Maharashtra transport minister Pratap Sarnaik, who is also a leader of Shinde's Shiv Sena, took a swipe at the MNS. "Does the MNS alone possess the right to fight for the Marathi language? If someone is taking law into their hands and targeting working-class individuals for political or financial gains, it will not be tolerated," Sarnaik said. I had asked the police to take action, and they have done so," he said. The issue came to the fore ahead of coming civic elections after the BJP-led government sought to introduce Hindi as a third language from Class 1 in state schools. That move was later withdrawn.
