Tennessee Titans add signal caller in 2014 PFF re-draft

USA Today30-06-2025
The NFL draft is always a flurry of activity, met with instant analysis and grades on every pick. It's often fun to look back and see what would have happened if a player's NFL performance were factored in. But, sometimes, redrafts of past drafts, where a player's career has been played out, are even more fun.
The Tennessee Titans would love to be able to go back and re-draft a few of their classes over the years. While they have hit on a few players, others are epic failures. It's a good thing for Titans fans that the team at Pro Football Focus (PFF) loves to redraft past classes and see what could have been.
In their latest entry, PFF decided to look back at the 2014 NFL draft to see how things could have been if the Houston Texans opened the draft by selecting all-time great Aaron Donald first overall instead of David Carr. Eventually, they made their way to the Titans at No. 11 and also made a significant change.
11. Tennessee Titans: QB Jimmy Garoppolo, Eastern Illinois (Round 2, Pick 62)
Original Pick: T Taylor Lewan, Michigan
Three quarterbacks started at least five games for the Titans in 2014: Zach Mettenberger, Charlie Whitehurst, and Jake Locker. Tennessee opts for some consistency here with Garoppolo, who has been mostly an average quarterback in the NFL, posting a 79.9 career PFF overall grade so far.
He did almost lead the 49ers to a Super Bowl victory in 2019, but it's the much-needed quarterback-room stability he provides that makes him the 11th pick in this redraft.
Lewan was a solid pick, and his legacy in Nashville cannot be overlooked. The offensive tackle came in and solidified the Titans' offensive line for an extended period. However, had the Titans taken Garoppolo, things might have been different.
While never a superstar, Garoppolo was a consistent quarterback who proved he could be a successful signal caller in the league, even leading the San Francisco 49ers to a Super Bowl appearance. During that period, the Titans were in quarterback purgatory and could have used a steady playmaker at the helm to steer the offense; he would have been a solid value and a good pick.
Looking back, while adding a quarterback would have been a flashy move, the focus on the offensive line was probably the right way to go. No quarterback can be successful without a solid line in front of them. If you don't believe me, just look back at the 2024 Titans' offense from 2024. So, while Garoppolo would have garnered some headlines, Lewan was likely the right choice.

Travis Kelce showed up to Chiefs camp with a dramatically different haircut

Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce has gone through numerous hair eras during his career. Last season, he grew his hair out (at Taylor Swift's urging, according to Patrick Mahomes). And he showed up to the first days of Chiefs training camp this week with even longer hair. That changed on Sunday, though. It looks like the fade is back for the future Hall of Famer. When the Chiefs took the field for Sunday's practice session, fans noticed that Kelce ditched the long hair in favor of the haircut he went with in the 2023 season. Yes, the long hair is officially gone. The fade worked out well for Kelce in 2023, so it makes sense. 49ers DE Tarron Jackson hospitalized after collision at training camp

San Francisco 49ers defensive end Tarron Jackson was hospitalized after a collision at training camp on Sunday. Head coach Kyle Shanahan announced the news to reporters after a morning practice session. Per beat writers on the scene, Jackson went down to the turf after being blocked and did not get up. He received treatment on the scene and was taken off the field on a backboard several minutes later. Shanahan told reporters that Jackson was conscious and had movement in his extremities. Jackson was transported to Stanford hospital for further evaluation. The precise nature of his injury was not clear from initial reports. Jackson, 27, joined the 49ers practice squad and signed a one-year, $1.1 million contract. He entered training camp seeking to earn a spot in the rotation and on San Francisco's 53-man roster. Beyond the obvious health concerns, Jackson's injury puts his status on the roster in doubt. Jackson is approaching what would be his fourth NFL season. An All-American at Coastal Carolina, Jackson's played in 24 NFL games since joining Philadelphia Eagles as a sixth-round draft pick in 2021. He played in 17 regular season games off the bench as a rookie. Jackson played in four games in 2022 before the Eagles waived him midseason. He rejoined the Eagles as a member of their practice squad and remained on the practice squad in 2023. He then signed with the Carolina Panthers practice squad in 2024 and played in three games with Carolina during the regular season. Jackson signed with the 49ers in January.

Chargers lock in Rashawn Slater with a multi-year extension

EL SEGUNDO, Calif. (AP) — The Los Angeles Chargers on Sunday agreed to a multi-year contract extension with left tackle Rashawn Slater, keeping him as Justin Herbert's protector. Slater has started all 52 games at left tackle since being chosen 13th overall in the first round of the 2021 NFL draft out of Northwestern. Last season, he started 16 games including the postseason, as the Chargers' offense committed eight turnovers — the fewest in franchise history and tied for the second-fewest offensive turnovers in a single season in NFL history. As a rookie in 2021, Slater was a second-team All-Pro after leading a front that protected for the No. 4-ranked total offense in the NFL (390.2 yards per game) as Herbert threw for an AFC-best 32 touchdowns. Slater was also named the starting left tackle for the AFC in the Pro Bowl, becoming the first rookie tackle to do so since 2012. ___ AP NFL: The Associated Press
