Treasury experts to intervene as Free State municipalities face audit crisis
Bloemfontein Courant reports that the intervention, announced by Free State MEC of Finance Moses Ketso Makume, comes after growing concerns over poor audit outcomes revealed in the latest Auditor-General's report.
Speaking during the first day of the oversight visit by the Portfolio Committee on Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs last Thursday, Makume said the deployment of internal experts is intended to strengthen financial and administrative governance where it is most needed.
'We are obviously concerned by the Auditor-General's report, but it is also an opportunity to improve governance in our municipalities so that they can do what is expected of them – provide services to the people,' said Makume.
Not a single municipality in the Free State received a clean audit in the most recent reporting cycle.
One of the most troubled municipalities, Nala Local Municipality was singled out for its instability after operating with two CFOs and two speakers simultaneously. This administrative chaos led to community unrest and recurring service delivery protests. In response, Amos Goliath has since been appointed as an administrator to stabilise the institution.
Makume emphasised that relying on costly external consultants had failed to produce results, with no municipality achieving a clean audit despite the financial investment.
'We are going to make use of internal capacity to assist our municipalities and lift them out of this rot. This approach will empower local administrations and help save money,' he said.

Malema: 'EFF has never been in the pockets of criminals'
EFF leader Julius Malema firmly denied that criminals have captured the Economic Freedom Fighters. Speaking on Saturday at the party's 3rd Central Command Team meeting of the 3rd National People's Assembly in Bela-Bela, Limpopo, Malema said the EFF has consistently been at the forefront of demanding accountability from the state. The Central Command Team is the EFF's highest decision-making body between the National People's Assemblies. According to IOL , Malema criticised President Cyril Ramaphosa for allegedly failing to act on warnings from the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA). He said the EFF called for an inquiry after NPA head Shamila Batohi claimed 'sinister forces' had captured the institution. 'It was the EFF that wrote to the president, demanding an inquiry into Batohi's claims. Instead of acting, he coerced her into withdrawing her remarks, calling it a misuse of language,' Malema said. Malema also pointed to the EFF's 2024 parliamentary motion to establish an ad hoc committee to investigate extortion rings targeting businesses and residents. He said the ANC, DA, and IFP, which govern the provinces worst hit by extortion, the Eastern Cape, Western Cape, and KwaZulu-Natal, rejected the proposal. 'Extortionists and criminal syndicates celebrated that day, as their political protection worked in their favour,' Malema said. Malema praised KwaZulu-Natal Police Commissioner Lieutenant General Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi for exposing the links between criminal cartels and political figures. 'It took Mkhwanazi breaking ranks for the truth the EFF has always spoken to finally be taken seriously,' he said. Malema reiterated that the EFF remains independent. 'We have never been and will never be in the pockets of criminals. When we gave other parties the chance to stand against crime, they refused,' he said. Malema reaffirmed his support for Mkhwanazi and said the EFF would welcome him to join the party if he loses his position in the SAPS. Murder of court officials: Parliament expresses grave concern, seeks to engage NPA

Image: Facebook Chairperson of Parliament's portfolio committee on justice and constitutional development, Xola Nqola, has expressed outrage at the cold-blooded murder of public prosecutor Tracy Brown in Gqeberha, Eastern Cape. IOL reported on Friday that the murder of the female public prosecutor in front of her child and partner has been described as an attack on the rule of law. Tracy Brown, a regional court prosecutor, was shot and killed in front of her house at Lotton Street, Young Park in Gqeberha on Thursday after four men alighted from a white Polo vehicle and fired multiple shots at her vehicle. Nqola said protectors of the justice system in South Africa are not safe. 'This is indeed a tragedy where the protectors of our criminal justice system are not safe anymore. This is unacceptable and no stone should be left unturned to bring the culprits to book,' he said. According to reports, Brown was ambushed and shot multiple times by four armed assailants while sitting in her car, in full view of her partner and child. 'The brutal nature of this assassination-style killing is deeply disturbing and represents a direct attack on the justice system and those who serve it with dedication and courage,' he said. This incident follows the tragic murder of Elona Sombulula, a court official at the Engcobo Magistrate's Court, in April. The parliamentary committee is 'gravely concerned' by what appears to be a pattern of targeted violence against officials within the justice sector. 'The murder of Ms Brown is not only a devastating loss to her family and colleagues, but an attack on the rule of law in South Africa. Prosecutors serve at the forefront of our fight against crime and corruption. When they are targeted, it threatens the foundations of our constitutional democracy. 'The committee sends its heartfelt condolences to Ms Brown's loved ones and colleagues during this painful time. The committee also calls on law enforcement agencies to prioritise the investigation and ensure that those responsible are swiftly apprehended and face the full might of the law.' Nqola said the portfolio committee will engage with the Department of Justice and the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) on urgent measures to enhance the safety and security of prosecutors and court officials across the country.
