Malema: 'EFF has never been in the pockets of criminals'

The South African10 hours ago
EFF leader Julius Malema firmly denied that criminals have captured the Economic Freedom Fighters.
Speaking on Saturday at the party's 3rd Central Command Team meeting of the 3rd National People's Assembly in Bela-Bela, Limpopo, Malema said the EFF has consistently been at the forefront of demanding accountability from the state.
The Central Command Team is the EFF's highest decision-making body between the National People's Assemblies.
According to IOL , Malema criticised President Cyril Ramaphosa for allegedly failing to act on warnings from the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA).
He said the EFF called for an inquiry after NPA head Shamila Batohi claimed 'sinister forces' had captured the institution.
'It was the EFF that wrote to the president, demanding an inquiry into Batohi's claims. Instead of acting, he coerced her into withdrawing her remarks, calling it a misuse of language,' Malema said.
Malema also pointed to the EFF's 2024 parliamentary motion to establish an ad hoc committee to investigate extortion rings targeting businesses and residents.
He said the ANC, DA, and IFP, which govern the provinces worst hit by extortion, the Eastern Cape, Western Cape, and KwaZulu-Natal, rejected the proposal.
'Extortionists and criminal syndicates celebrated that day, as their political protection worked in their favour,' Malema said.
Malema praised KwaZulu-Natal Police Commissioner Lieutenant General Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi for exposing the links between criminal cartels and political figures.
'It took Mkhwanazi breaking ranks for the truth the EFF has always spoken to finally be taken seriously,' he said.
Malema reiterated that the EFF remains independent.
'We have never been and will never be in the pockets of criminals. When we gave other parties the chance to stand against crime, they refused,' he said.
Malema reaffirmed his support for Mkhwanazi and said the EFF would welcome him to join the party if he loses his position in the SAPS.

Tens of thousands join pro-Palestinian marches in Australia

Tens of thousands of demonstrators braved pouring rain to march across the iconic Sydney Harbour Bridge on Sunday calling for peace and aid deliveries in the war-torn Gaza Strip, where a humanitarian crisis has been worsening. Nearly two years into a war that Palestinian authorities say has killed more than 60,000 people in Gaza, governments and humanitarian organisations say a shortage of food is leading to widespread starvation. Some of those attending the march, called by its organisers the 'March for Humanity', carried pots and pans as symbols of the hunger. Marchers ranged from the elderly to families with young children. Among them was WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange. Many carried umbrellas. Some waved Palestinian flags and chanted 'We are all Palestinians.' New South Wales police said up to 90,000 people had attended, far more than expected. The protest organiser, Palestine Action Group Sydney, said in a Facebook post as many as 300,000 people may have marched. New South Wales police and the state's premier last week tried to block the march from taking place on the bridge, a city landmark and transport thoroughfare, saying the route could cause safety hazards and transport disruption. The state's Supreme Court ruled on Saturday that it could go ahead. Acting deputy police commissioner Peter McKenna said more than a thousand police were deployed and the size of the crowd had led to fears of a crush. 'No-one was hurt,' he told a press conference. 'But gee whizz, I wouldn't like try and do this every Sunday at that short notice.' Police were also present in Melbourne, where a similar protest march took place. Diplomatic pressure ramped up on Israel in recent weeks. France and Canada have said they will recognise a Palestinian state, and Britain says it will follow suit unless Israel addresses the humanitarian crisis and reaches a ceasefire. Israel has condemned these decisions as rewarding Hamas, the group that governs Gaza and whose attack on Israel in October 2023 began an Israeli offensive that has flattened much of the enclave. Israel has also denied pursuing a policy of starvation and accused Hamas of stealing aid. Australia's centre-left Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has said he supports a two-state solution and Israel's denial of aid and killing of civilians 'cannot be defended or ignored', but has not recognised Palestine. Therese Curtis, a marcher in her 80s, said she had the human right and privilege of good medical care in Australia. 'But the people in Palestine are having their hospitals bombed, they're being denied a basic right of medical care and I'm marching specifically for that,' she said.

Limpopo woman, 20, arrested for alleged murder of 3-month-old baby

A 20-year-old woman will appear before Makhado Magistrate court in Limpopo soon in connection with the alleged murder of a three-month-baby. Police in Bandelierkop under Vhembe District arrested the 20-year-old female following the untimely death of a three-month-old child on Friday, 1 August, at about 18:00 in Mundzedzi village. Police spokesperson in Limpopo, Colonel Malesela Ledwaba, said police were on patrol duties when they were summoned at Vleifontein clinic at about 18:30 after being informed about two individuals who brought a deceased child to the facility. Upon arrival, a medical officer pointed to the lifeless body of a child on the bed. Ledwaba said the duo informed police that they were seated outside the house with a 20-year-old woman suspect holding the child. 'Reports suggest that while they were seated, the suspect took the child and went inside the house, and after a few minutes, they went inside to check on her. They allegedly found the suspect in a seated position and choking the baby. 'They intervened and took the victim and rushed him to the local clinic, and he succumbed to his injuries. He was declared dead by the medical services personnel,' Ledwaba explained. Additionally, Ledwaba said following the incident, a case of murder was immediately opened and the suspect was traced and subsequently apprehended for the murder of a three-month-old victim. 'The motive behind the incident is unknown, and a 20-year-old suspect who is a relative of the deceased will appear before the Makhado Magistrate's court soon, facing a charge of murder. Police investigations are continuing.' Let us know by leaving a comment below, or send a WhatsApp to 060 011 021 1.
