Hong Kong striker ignoring selection controversy, aiming to make history against India

Manuel Bleda said he was ignoring outside noise over his Hong Kong call-up as the striker sets his sights on 'making history' when the city team welcome India to Kai Tak Stadium on Tuesday.

The Spain-born player made a belated international debut in Thursday's 0-0 draw with Nepal.
When he received his passport in February 2024, Bleda was recovering from the anterior cruciate ligament tear he suffered the previous pre-season.
A May 2024 comeback proved to be a false start, and he would have to wait until March this year for his genuine return to action.
However, Bleda's selection for Hong Kong despite not scoring in eight appearances for his club team Eastern – at the expense of 18-goal BC Rangers striker Lau Chi-lok – stoked the ire of supporters.

'For me, it's no problem – I don't decide who comes and who does not; that is the coach's job,' Bleda said.

Hongkongers aim to challenge mainland China table tennis dominance after WTT win

Hong Kong table tennis duo Wong Chun-ting and Baldwin Chan Ho-wah said the city's players have the ability to beat their usually dominant mainland Chinese counterparts after their maiden men's doubles triumph in Croatia on Sunday. Facing mainlanders Huang Youzheng and Xue Fei in the World Table Tennis (WTT) Contender final in Zagreb, Wong and Chan found themselves one point from defeat before winning three straight points to earn their first title since teaming up last October. The duo, ranked fourth, had also defeated newly crowned world champions and top seeds Shunsuke Togami and Hiroto Shinozuka in back-to-back tournaments – first in the Slovenian capital, Ljubljana, then in Zagreb. 'We beat some top pairs along the way, so the wins were a confidence booster,' Wong, 33, said. 'It's only the first year for Chan and me, so I hope there are more breakthroughs to come. 'We're satisfied with the results, but this is only one of the WTT tour legs, so I hope we can achieve the same in the bigger tournaments.'
