Rebekah Del Rio dead aged 57: American singer famed for her role in David Lynch's Mullholland Drive passes away at home

Daily Mail27-06-2025
American singer Rebekah Del Rio has died at the age of 57.
The artist was famed for her performance of Llorando in David Lynch's critically acclaimed 2001 movie Mulholland Drive.
Rebekah, who grew up in San Diego but was of Mexican, Italian and Sephardic heritage, was found dead at her Los Angeles home on June 23.
The cause of her death remains unknown. Her death comes 16 years after her son, Phillip C. DeMars, sadly died aged 23 in 2009.
The singer's nephew Dan Coronado confirmed her passing with a post on Facebook, writing: 'Just found out my Tia Becky passed away, and we literally just saw her on Father's Day.
'So grateful the kids got to hear her sing. and also that I didn't listen to her and secretly recorded the moment.
'Her most famous song is titled 'Llorando' which is named after Roy Orbison's song 'Crying' which I'm doing right now as I type this out.
'Thank you for sharing your beautiful gift with the world. We love you.'
Rebekah had taken to the stage at a live charity screening of Mullholland Drive in LA just a couple of weeks before her death.
Her performance of the Spanish version of Crying featured in a famous scene in the film.
Del Rio appears to be singing at a club in the scene, before fainting and falling to the floor as the movie's two lead actors Naomi Watts and Laura Harring watch on in tears.
In a 2022 interview, the singer revealed that she recorded the track for David Lynch before filming for the movie began.
'There were many takes,' she told IndieWire.
'And with every take I sang along because I felt I had to produce that same feeling with the vibrato in my throat so the audience could see it.
'I also wanted the beautiful girls on the balcony, Laura and Naomi, to experience it live. They were present while I was doing my scene, so I sang to them.'
She went on to sing for Mullholland Drive director Lynch on further occasions, including in a revival series of Twin Peaks: The Return.
Following her sad passing this week, fans flooded to X to pay tribute to Del Rio.
They wrote: 'Just learned that Rebekah Del Rio passed away a few days ago. RIP to an incredible voice',
'One of the greatest artistic experiences of my life (her scene in the film). I didn't know much about her outside of this, and Southland Tales, and that's my point. Never understood why she wasn't a household name',
'This is sad. Rebekah Del Rio had a stunning voice',
'RIP Rebekah Del Rio. Just like in Mullholland Drive, her voice keeps going when she's not there, and what a voice it is. Grateful to have seen her on the big screen the other month',
'I had the immensely good fortune to witness Rebekah Del Rio sing live at @RioTheatre two years ago.
'And yes, she also sang the Mullholland Drive song as well as the one from Southland Tales.
RIP to such a bright and brilliant artist'.
Rebekah's passing comes just months after David Lynch - who also directed Twin Peaks and Blue Velvet - died at the age of 78.
After battling a period of ill health, Lynch's family announced his passing in January of this year.
'It is with deep regret that we, the family, announce the passing of the man and the artist, David Lynch.'
It was later announced that the film director had died of a cardiac arrest due to chronic obstructive pulmonary disease.

‘Winning, winning, winning:' Trump signs his ‘big, beautiful bill' into law

Donald Trump strode onto the Truman Balcony in the evening sun, his glamorous wife, Melania, to his left, his recently passed 'big, beautiful, bill' waiting for him on the South Lawn. 'America's winning, winning, winning like never before,' he declared, the stars and stripes billowing behind him. It was the moment he had been waiting for. Against the odds, Mr Trump had managed to push his controversial legislative victory through Congress in time for the nation's birthday. The US president and Mrs Trump leant back and marvelled as fights and a B2 stealth bomber – which Mr Trump called a 'big, beautiful plane' – streaked the blue skies above the annual White House Fourth of July military picnic. Dressed in a long, white dress with white, blue and red detailing at the waist, her hair in loose curls, Mrs Trump, 55, made a rare appearance with her husband, standing beside him, her hands in her pockets, as he delivered a 30-minute speech. Occasionally, Mr Trump would reach out to touch her waist. The White House had also been styled: it was decorated with red, white and blue bunting for the festivities. The president thanked his beaming first lady for her contributions to the celebrations: 'She worked very hard to make this all work'. The United States Marine Band played patriotic marches interspersed with songs by 1980s pop icons Chaka Khan and Huey Lewis, as well as a rendition of the national anthem. 'We've, I think, had probably the most successful almost six months as a president and the presidency, I think they're saying it was the best six months, and I know for a fact they're saying the last two weeks, there has never been anything like it. 'As far as winning, winning, winning,' Mr Trump told the crowd of supporters, politicians and military families. America is the 'hottest country' in the world, Mr Trump added, as he wore a navy suit in Friday's 30-degree heat. 'It's only going to get hotter, I promise you that', he added. The festivities came after Mr Trump's bill passed the House on a largely party-line vote on Thursday, culminating a months-long push by the GOP to cram most of its priorities into a single budget bill that could be enacted without Senate Democrats being able to block it indefinitely by filibustering. The legislation extends Trump's 2017 multi-trillion dollar tax cuts and cuts Medicaid and food stamps by $1.2 trillion. It provides for a massive increase in immigration enforcement. Congress's non-partisan scorekeeper projects that nearly 12 million more people will lose health insurance under the law. Democrats condemned the package as a giveaway to the rich that will rob millions more lower-income people of their health insurance, food assistance and financial stability. Hakeem Jeffries, the House minority leader, said the assembly floor resembled a 'crime scene' due to the cuts to services in a record-breaking speech that delayed the bill's passage by more than eight hours. Responding indirectly on Friday, Mr Trump said: 'I just want you to know if you see anything negative put out by Democrats, it's all a con job.' He said his legislation was 'the biggest bill of its type in history'. 'We've never had anything like that before, nothing like that they thought would be possible to get passed', he said. It was a 'triumph of democracy on the birthday of democracy', he added. Following his remarks, Mr Trump walked down the steps to the South Lawn to finally greet his beloved bill. Republican legislators and members of cabinet crowded behind him as he signed the legislation. He then banged down the gavel, given to him by House Speaker Mike Johnson, that was used during the bill's final passage.

Blac Chyna ends engagement to Derrick Milano after 2 years together

Blac Chyna and Derrick Milano have broken off their engagement after two years of being betrothed. The rapper, 37, who now goes by her birth name, Angela White, shared a post to her Instagram Stories revealing the split on July 3. 'After much prayer and reflection, Derrick and I have decided to call off the engagement,' her post began. 'We love each other deeply and are good friends, but we both believe that God's guidance has shown us that this is the right path for both of us, as we each continue our journeys,' she continued. 'May we find peace and fulfillment in His divine will, trusting that His plan is greater than our own.' Milano, a Grammy-winning producer and songwriter, 31, posted a similar statement on his own Instagram Stories. Milano, who's real last name is Gray, proposed to White while she was performing on stage during Howard University's Yard Fest in 2023. Milano could be seen facing Blac Chyna who had joined him on the stage and after a few moments, he got down on one knee and pulled out a ring box. The crowd erupted into loud cheers and applause as she agreed to marry him. She flashed an excited smile as the couple kissed and fell into a loving embrace. She then held out her left hand as he placed the diamond sparkler on her ring finger as the audience continued to applaud the lovebirds. Derrick then picked up his microphone and asked, 'Angela, will you marry me?' In response, Blac Chyna simply held up her left hand to show off the eye-catching ring to the crowd. DJ Quicksilva typed out in the caption of the clip, 'Only @HowardU #YardFest can make MAGIC happen like this.' He added, 'My guy @DerrickMilano just popped the BIG question to the HomeTeam @BLACCHYNA. CONGRATS.' At the time, they made a statement to People announcing their engagement. The same month the couple went official with their relationship, she gushed 'You won't be able to say power couple without mentioning Angela White & Derrick Gray! 'They always say don't go looking for love, let love find you. In… this case love found us. I know that might sound cliché, but hey, it be like that sometimes.' She added that their relationship is based on 'friendship' as well as 'long talks, consistency, support, love, trust, and faith.' The star added that God's timing is, 'always right & when it comes to love, you have to have faith in GOD & each other. But always GOD first!' 'Being able to be around somebody in your most vulnerable state plays a huge role in a successful relationship. 'Not to mention how important communication is to express to each other feelings, emotions, & honesty.' Blac Chyna continued, 'As you know I'm very involved in my career & vision just as much as Derrick is. When I win "WE WIN" when He wins "WE WIN."' White has previously been engaged to ex, Tyga, and also Rob Kardashian. She and Tyga began dating in 2011 and welcomed their son, King Cairo, 12, in October 2012. But their engagement ended when they split in 2014 after he began a romance with Kylie Jenner. During an interview on The Viall Files podcast in 2023, she opened up about what led to their separation. 'I feel like it ran its course and then he started talking to Kylie at the time, which she was like 16 or something. Yeah, I was engaged and stuff, so that's kind of what ended it.' In 2016, Blac Chyna moved on with Rob Kardashian and the former couple share daughter Dream Kardashian, seven. That same year, the pair became engaged but their tumultuous relationship came to an end in 2017.

Civil war breaks out at ESPN as popular on-air personalities clash over 'credibility' in public spat

There's a civil war brewing at ESPN as two of its popular on-air personalities, Kirk Herbstreit and Elle Duncan, are clashing over 'credibility' in a public spat. The feud between the college football analyst and the host of the flagship edition of 'SportsCenter' began as Hebrstreit spoke on what he feels is the proper etiquette of a broadcaster. Duncan was not the only name Herbstreit dropped, but hers was the only one painted in a negative light by the longtime 'College GameDay' personality, with him taking exception with broadcasters who show fandom on-air. 'If you are a personality, like a Bill Simmons, or a Stephen A. (Smith), or a Pat McAfee … part of their schtick is kind of that,' Herbstreit said this week on 'Next Man Up'. 'But you watch SportsCenter and Elle Duncan is sitting there cheering for Georgia.' 'She's openly cheering. I'm not a fan of that personally. I think it hurts your credibility. When that team is playing other teams, fans are looking at you like… That's different.' Duncan took time away from her Independence Day celebrations to fire back at Herbstreit, with her response being anything but civil. Herbstreit's comments over how to act on-camera led to a clapback from Duncan on Friday 'Didn't have this on my bingo card for today but my fandom doesn't impact in any way what or how we talk about teams on air. Ever,' Duncan posted on X. 'I… Also **whispers** I'm not the only one. So why I get singled out?' Herbstreit was accused of being hypocritical after his comments were made, as he has been viewed as partial to Ohio State. Others have viewed the criticism of Duncan as fair, as they want the news of sports not to be given with personal opinions inserted without warning, Duncan and Herbstreit do cross paths on ESPN's airwaves, as SportsCenter's anchors are tasked with interviewing specialists from the network on their expertise. Herbstreit has done plenty of guest spots on ESPN's flagship show, and will likely run into Duncan again.
