Pearly Tan-Thinaah's hunger to win never wavers, says national women's doubles head coach
Women's doubles head coach Rosman Razak said the intense focus was visible throughout the two consecutive weeks of the tournament campaign from the 2025 Thailand Open to the 2025 Malaysia Masters.
'I think the most important thing is that they can distinguish external problems from training and performance.
'They train hard and want to win, that's what's important and I think their desire to win has never waned and I think that's enough for a coach,' he told reporters at Axiata Arena, Bukit Jalil, yesterday.
Despite losing in the semi-finals of the 2025 Malaysia Masters to the Chinese pair, Jia Yi Fan-Zhang Shu Xian, Rosman was still satisfied with Pearly-Thinaah's performance as they fought until the deciding set before conceding 16-21, 21-15, 14-21 in a 75-minute match.
He believes the Chinese pair have an advantage at the net, which is an aspect that will be focused on in training going forward.
'(The fatigue of playing back-to-back tournaments) is normal as a top-level player. Like I said, they have great desire to win,' he said.
According to Rosman, the Pearly-Thinaah contract issue, which reportedly expired at the end of last year but has not yet been finalised with the Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM), has not affected their performance on the court.
'They are training hard and want to win... that is what is important,' he said.
He added that the high commitment shown by the 2025 Thailand Open champions is an important benchmark for the national doubles, with efforts now focused on closing the performance gap between the main pair and other pairs under the national programme.
Pearly-Thinaah are next scheduled to play against the Hong Kong pair, Lui Lok Lok-Tsang Hiu Yan, in the first round of the 2025 Singapore Open, which will take place from May 27 to June 1. — Bernama

The world No 2 pair's hopes of hitting a career high were dashed by the unranked giant-killers Fajar Alfian-Shohibul Fikri, losing 15-21, 14-21 in just 34 minutes. The Indonesians played aggressively, giving Aaron-Wooi Yik little chance to come back after taking huge leads. Aaron-Wooi Yik took home US$70,000 (RM295,146) as runners-up while the champions won US$148,000 (RM624,000). This was Aaron-Wooi Yik's sixth appearance in the final of a World Tour Super 1000 tournament. Today's result marks a huge win for the Indonesian duo, capturing a Super 1000 title despite the China Open being just their second international tournament after being paired up. Aaron-Wooi Yik were gunning for a fourth title this year, having won the Thailand Open, Singapore Open and Badminton Asia Championships. The two-time Olympic bronze medalists can however take heart as this was their 13th World Tour final appearance in their badminton career, of which they have won four.

From army days to race days, veteran runner, 86, proves age is just a number at Kuching Half Marathon
KUCHING, July 27 — Daily jogging and walking have kept 86-year-old Wong Chan Voon on his feet — quite literally, as the oldest participant in this year's Kuching Half Marathon Heritage Run 2025. Originally from Ipoh, Wong served in the army at the Central Road Camp here from 1963 to 1964, and returned to Kuching last year to take part in the event for the first time, where he completed the 10km category. 'This is my second time. Last year I came and ran 10km — this time, I took part in (the) 5km (category) only. 'It feels very exciting. I'm happy to be in a group here and to run with everyone,' he told reporters when met during the prize presentation ceremony held at the Kuching South City Council (MBKS) compound here today. He said he was also looking forward to enjoying the local sights and food during his visit to Kuching. Wong began running in 1995 after he was encouraged by friends to join their practice sessions. Three decades later, he still jogs and walks every morning — without a coach, special training plan or strict diet — to maintain his health and fitness. Over the years, he has participated in various races across Singapore, Kuala Lumpur and Penang, and touts one of his proudest achievements as completing the Penang Bridge International Marathon on November 17, 2023, where he finished the 42.195km run in 5 hours and 53 minutes at the age of 74. When asked for advice to others in his age group on how to stay healthy, Wong kept it simple and said: 'Just do your own way of jogging and walking, like me. That's all.' Wong was one of the 3,200 participants who took part in this year's run. Meanwhile, Minister for Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Arts Datuk Seri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah when met after the prize presentation expressed his satisfaction with the growing response for the marathon. He described the Kuching Half Marathon Heritage Run 2025, which was organised by the Kuching City Joggers Club (CJC) in collaboration with MBKS and held in conjunction with Kuching City Day, as a very exciting event. Abdul Karim congratulated the organisers for a well-executed event and highlighted its positive impact on Sarawak's tourism sector.
