Pearly Tan-Thinaah fall short in China Open semis against home favourites
KUALA LUMPUR, July 26 — National women's doubles pair Pearly Tan-M. Thinaah fell short of reaching the final of the 2025 China Open Badminton Championship after losing to home duo Jia Yi Fan-Zhang Shu Xian in the semi-finals today. In the match held at the Changzhou Olympic Sports Centre Gymnasium, world number three Pearly-Thinaah went down 14-21, 17-21 in 38 minutes, extending their head-to-head record against the Chinese pair to 1-4 from five encounters. So far this season, Pearly and Thinaah have secured only one title — the 2025 Thailand Open, which they won in May. Yi Fan-Shu Xian will next face either compatriots Liu Sheng Shu-Tan Ning or South Korean duo Kim Hye Jeong-Kong Hee Yong in the final tomorrow. — Bernama

Pearly-Thinaah fall to home pair in China Open semis

(Bernama pic) PETALING JAYA : Women's doubles shuttlers Pearly Tan-M Thinaah failed to qualify for the China Open finals after being outplayed by a lower-ranked home pair in the semi-finals today. The world No 3 pair lost 14-21, 17-21 in 38 minutes to seventh-ranked Jia Yi Fan-Zhang Shu Xian, who were backed by a vociferous home crowd. Pearly-Thinaah took home US$28,000 (RM118,000) as semi-finalists at the World Tour Super 1000 event. Yi Fan-Shu Xian have now won four of their five encounters with the Malaysians. The only time when Pearly-Thinaah won was at the Indian Open in January after the Chinese duo were forced to retire due to injury. Yi Fan-Shu Xian will play either China's world No 1 pair Liu Sheng Shu-Tan Ning or the sixth-ranked Kim Hye Jeong-Kong Hee Yong from South Korea for the title tomorrow. Pearly-Thinaah's hope for a second World Tour title this year after winning the Thailand Open in May continues to be elusive despite having reached four finals so far. Last week, the duo were runners-up at the Japan Open. The only Malaysians remaining at the China Open are men's doubles pair Aaron Chia-Soh Wooi Yik, who will take on India's Satwiksairaj Rankireddy-Chiraq Shetty in a semi-final match this evening.

(Bernama pic) PETALING JAYA : Malaysia's unheralded women's doubles pair Go Pei Kee-Teoh Mei Xing upset the form book at the China Open today when they defeated a top Japanese pair to qualify for the quarter-finals. The world No 22 pair battled for more than an hour to overcome Rin Iwanaga-Kie Nakanishi 26-24, 7-21, 21-18 in a hard-fought three-game match in Changzhou. This is a major achievement for the Malaysians as it will be their first quarter-final appearance at a World Tour Super 1000 event. Today's match was the first time both pairs had met in an international tournament. The Malaysians face another tough encounter in tomorrow's quarter-final, meeting home pair Jia Yi Fan-Zhang Shu Xian, who are ranked world No 8. The tournament offers a total prize money of US$2 million (RM8.4 million), with winners in the doubles events taking home US$148,000 (RM624,000) and the runners-up US$70,000 (RM295,146). All semi-finalists will get US$28,000 (RM118,000) each while quarter-finalists will be awarded US$12,500 (RM52,700).

Pearly Tan-Thinaah's hunger to win never wavers, says national women's doubles head coach
KUALA LUMPUR, May 25 — The ability of national women's doubles team Pearly Tan and M. Thinaah to ward off external pressure and remain focused on training and performance is considered a major achievement, as they show maturity as a pillar of the national badminton squad Women's doubles head coach Rosman Razak said the intense focus was visible throughout the two consecutive weeks of the tournament campaign from the 2025 Thailand Open to the 2025 Malaysia Masters. 'I think the most important thing is that they can distinguish external problems from training and performance. 'They train hard and want to win, that's what's important and I think their desire to win has never waned and I think that's enough for a coach,' he told reporters at Axiata Arena, Bukit Jalil, yesterday. Despite losing in the semi-finals of the 2025 Malaysia Masters to the Chinese pair, Jia Yi Fan-Zhang Shu Xian, Rosman was still satisfied with Pearly-Thinaah's performance as they fought until the deciding set before conceding 16-21, 21-15, 14-21 in a 75-minute match. He believes the Chinese pair have an advantage at the net, which is an aspect that will be focused on in training going forward. '(The fatigue of playing back-to-back tournaments) is normal as a top-level player. Like I said, they have great desire to win,' he said. According to Rosman, the Pearly-Thinaah contract issue, which reportedly expired at the end of last year but has not yet been finalised with the Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM), has not affected their performance on the court. 'They are training hard and want to win... that is what is important,' he said. He added that the high commitment shown by the 2025 Thailand Open champions is an important benchmark for the national doubles, with efforts now focused on closing the performance gap between the main pair and other pairs under the national programme.
