Paramedic who drugged lover with abortion pills to kill their unborn baby starred on BBC show about 'frontline heroes and their life-saving work'

Daily Mail6 days ago
A paramedic who secretly drugged his lover with a syringe laced with abortion pills to kill their unborn baby previously starred on a BBC show about frontline heroes and their life saving work.
Stephen Doohan, 33, has today been sentenced to a decade behind bars.
However he previously featured in a BBC documentary series called Paramedics on Scene.
The award-winning series follows front line heroes from the Scottish Ambulance Service as they take part in life saving work.
One of the show's bosses previously described it as a 'fascinating insight into the challenges that paramedics face each day and see the amazing work they do to help those in need.'
In one clip he was seen assessing a woman who was panicking after she had a sting.
The series returned earlier this year for its sixth season.
The emergency worker was married when he met the woman on holiday in Spain in 2021 and began a long-distance relationship.
The woman travelled to Edinburgh to see him after learning she was pregnant in March 2023, Glasgow High Court heard.
The paramedic then crushed pills into a syringe and administered the abortion pills as she lay on a bed at his home in the Scottish city's upmarket Grange area.
Doohan gave his lover, who was not aware he was married, more drugs days later, where she soon fell ill, and later fainted in the shower, jurors were told.
It later emerged the woman suffered a miscarriage as a result of Doohan's actions.
The Clinical Team Leader with the Scottish Ambulance Service attempted to silence the woman with gifts, and begged her not to go to the police.
But, she eventually reported him to the Scottish Ambulance Service having recorded a conversation of him effectively confessing.
Today, he was sentenced to ten years and six months, after pleading guilty to assault, sexual assault and another charge of causing the woman to have an abortion.
At the sentencing, Judge Lord Colbeck said the 33-year-old had put his victim, through 'considerable pain' for several days, and 'left her facing a lifetime of pain and loss.'
'You left her in what can only be described as considerable pain and anguish over the prospect of losing her child before she did, in fact, do so.
'The offences committed by you, frankly, are almost as serious as any this court is ever asked to sentence.'
Lord Colbeck also imposed a non-harassment order banning him from approaching or contacting the woman.
The ambulance service suspended Doohan after his actions came to light, and he is no longer employed by them.
The court previously heard how Doohan was temporarily separated from his wife when he discovered the woman was pregnant in March 2023.
Doohan and the woman were involved in consensual sexual activity where he went to do something she could not see, but was not 'suspicious of his actions' at that time.
He had used the laced syringe on his lover, and she began to suffer stomach cramps the following day, the court was told.
When they returned to the paramedic's flat, he gave her diazepam for the pain.
The court heard she ended up in a 'deep sleep', but awoke to find Doohan 'initiating sexual contact'.
This time she was suspicious of what he was then doing, but was also feeling the effects of the diazepam.
Doohan later went to the toilet and the woman took the chance to peek under the mattress.
Here, she discovered a plastic syringe filled with crushed tablets as well as star-shaped tablets,
Prosecutor Scott McKenzie explained how the woman immediately checked online for 'abortion tablet'.
Mr McKenzie: 'The search returned images that matched the tablet the woman had found.'
Doohan initially denied what he had done before sobbing claiming he was 'scared'.
He also said he had got the tablets from a doctor, but insisted they would not 'work' on the woman as it was the wrong dosage.
Due to the ongoing pain, the woman attended hospital on March 16, 2023, with Doohan, who pleaded that he would be arrested if she 'told the truth'.
Mr McKenzie: 'Before speaking to medical staff, the woman and Doohan rehearsed what she was going to say.
'The midwife recalled her being distressed and concerned about the baby. Doohan appeared quiet and expressionless.'
The next day, the woman collapsed in the shower and had to return to hospital. She insisted Doohan did not come in the examination room this time.
It was soon after that it emerged she had suffered a miscarriage.
Doohan then splashed out on various gifts including perfume, socks, money to get her hair done and football tickets to keep her quiet. The last contact she had with Doohan was in late June 2023.
Mr McKenzie said the woman has ben 'significantly affected' by her ordeal.
The woman initially lodged a formal complaint with the Scottish Ambulance Service, where she provided screenshots of messages as well as the conversation she recorded. This information was soon later passed to the police.
During the probe, it was discovered Doohan had checked for medical information on the drug misoprostol the same day the woman told him she was expecting.
The court heard misoprostol can be 'administered for the purpose of managing a miscarriage or inducing a termination of pregnancy'.
Mark Stewart KC, defending, said Doohan was 'deeply sorry' for what he had done.
The lawyer added he had issues at the time which affected his 'judgement and decision making' although that did not excuse what happened.
The paramedic also previously faced an allegation of stealing misoprostol from the Scottish Ambulance Service in Edinburgh, but a not guilty plea was accepted.
Doohan was also placed on the sex offenders list.

EastEnders actor arrested on set as 'assault' left woman 'very distressed'

An extra in his 50s was arrested on the EastEnders set at Elstree Studios, Hertfordshire, on May 7 after a woman complained he had tried to forcibly kiss her while filming An actor was arrested on the set of EastEnders following an alleged assault that left a woman "clearly very distressed", reports say. Cameras stopped rolling at Elstree Studios, Hertfordshire, on May 7 after a woman complained that a fellow extra, a man in his 50s, had tried to forcibly kiss her. Security stepped in to grab the man, which led to a scuffle before the actor was handed over to police. According to reports, the man was arrested on suspicion of sexual assault of the woman and of common assault against another person, which is alleged to have happened while he was escorted away. He is said to have been released on bail while investigations continue. Filming resumed after the incident. A source told The Sun that the incident was "dramatic" and "everyone was quite shaken by up by it all." The witness said: "No one could quite believe what was happening. "The main focus was the woman's welfare, as she was clearly very distressed. Obviously, filming had to be stopped while the incident was dealt with by production managers and security. "It got very heated when the man squared up to the security staff as they tried to calm things. Eventually, he was questioned and taken away by police." It is understood that the cameras didn't capture footage of the alleged attack, but it's not clear whether the scenes filmed on the day of the incident have been screened on TV yet. According to the publication, Adam Woodyatt, who plays Ian Beale in the BBC soap opera, was one of the stars filming at the time. The source added that "everyone involved in the production, including the cast and crew, acted very responsibly in an extremely difficult situation." Crew members were said to be grateful to bosses for the "professionalism and understanding" they showed in handling the incident. Hertfordshire Police confirmed that a suspect in his 50s was "arrested on suspicion of common assault and sexual assault in relation to two victims." The force added: "He is on police bail whilst enquiries continue." EastEnders said in a statement on Saturday: "While we would never comment on individuals, EastEnders has on-site security and well-established procedures in place to safeguard the safety and welfare of everyone who works on the show."

Pressure grows to strip shamed rugby star Stuart Hogg of his MBE award

HONOURS chiefs are under mounting pressure to strip shamed rugby star Stuart Hogg of his MBE. It comes six months after he was sentenced for inflicting five years of domestic abuse on his estranged wife Gillian. 3 Ex-Scotland rugby captain Stuart Hogg, 33, was given a community payback order for at Selkirk Sheriff Court for terrorising his wife Credit: Owen Humphreys/PA 3 The former national team skipper was awarded an MBE for services to the game only months before his conviction Credit: Adam Davy/PA Wire 3 Hogg abused spouse Gillian for five years We told in February how the Cabinet Office's honours bosses, the Forfeiture Committee, were asked to make a 'timely decision'. But the disgraced former Scotland captain, 33, is still clinging to the gong awarded to him in 2024 for services to rugby union. Last night Tory MSP Pam Gosal said: 'It's shameful Stuart Hogg has still not done the right thing and handed back his MBE. "His continued refusal is an insult to his victim and all domestic abuse victims across the country. And clinical psychologist Dr Mairead Tagg, who has worked with domestic abuse survivors for more than 20 years, also urged the officials to act now. She said: 'Are they just hoping it will all go away? "Do they think we are so taken up with other issues that we will just let it go? "I don't think so. 'Stuart Hogg made his ex- partner's life a living hell. Rugby player Stuart Hogg sentenced for abusing estranged wife 'Do we really want to reward that? "This man has let his teammates down, he has let his country down and the good name of Scottish rugby down.' Dr Tagg added: 'He is not a role model. "We should not be rewarding domestic abusers.' We told how Hogg pleaded guilty last November to a charge of domestic abuse involving mum-of-four Gillian, 38. He admitted to shouting and swearing, tracking her movements and sending distressing messages. At Selkirk Sheriff Court in January he got a community supervision order and was barred from contacting his ex for five years. First Minister John Swinney previously said calls to take back Hogg's MBE were 'reasonable and understandable'. An honour can be withdrawn for a variety of reasons, including criminal convictions and bringing the honours system into disrepute. Former Crewe Alexandra footie manager Dario Gradi, 84, was stripped of his MBE in 2023 after failing to protect kids from sexual abuse at the club. A review found he 'should have done more' on claims about paedo coach Barry Bennell. Hogg, now at French side Montpellier, was approached for comment. The Cabinet Office said it didn't comment on individuals.

EastEnders actor arrested on set after 'indecent assault' on female extra

EastEnders cast members were reportedly shocked as an extra was arrested on set for 'indecent assault'. It's claimed that an unnamed man in his fifties tried to forcibly kiss another female cast member without her consent. The woman complained about the incident, causing cameras to stop rolling. It was then that security intervened, which caused a scene as the man fought back. The extra, whose exact role on the show is unknown, was later removed from the set and detained by police in Hertfordshire. A source told The Sun on Sunday: 'In all the years of filming EastEnders, nothing this dramatic has happened—with police turning up at the studios. 'Everyone was quite shaken up by it all. No one could quite believe what was happening. 'The main focus was the woman's welfare, as she was clearly very distressed.' They added that matters became 'very heated when the man squared up to the security staff as they tried to calm things.' 'Eventually, he was questioned and taken away by police.' While the incident is said to have taken place earlier in spring, it is common knowledge that soaps such as EastEnders film months in advance, meaning the scenes involving the accused extra could have already aired. However, this is not known, nor is it known if he will feature at all. As per the publication, the woman involved received attention from BBC staff while filming was halted for a while. Shooting then continued. 'Everyone involved in the production, including the cast and crew, acted very responsibly in an extremely difficult situation,' explained the insider. Crew members were also said to be thankful for how bosses handled the issue with 'professionalism and understanding'. It's believed that the man accused was arrested on suspicion of indecent assault and common assault, both against two separate people. The latter is thought to refer to his altercation with security when he was escorted away. The individual is currently on bail as an investigation takes place. In a statement, Hertfordshire Police said: 'We can confirm we did receive a report of an incident that took place in Eldon Avenue, Borehamwood, on Wednesday, May 7. 'The suspect, a man aged in his fifties, was arrested on suspicion of common assault and sexual assault in relation to two victims. 'He is on police bail whilst enquiries continue.' Additionally, the BBC said in a statement to Metro this weekend: 'While we would never comment on individuals, EastEnders has on-site security and well-established procedures in place to safeguard the safety and welfare of everyone who works on the show.' At the time, the likes of Adam Woodyatt, who plays Ian Beale and has done so since the soap first aired in 1985, were on set and allegedly witnessed the arrest. Other actors were also present when filming was happening, just a short distance from the iconic Queen Vic pub.
