Manitoba Ride for Dad licence plate joins list of options available for drivers
The new plates, which support the Manitoba Prostate Cancer Support Group, join a wide range of specialty plates that let Manitoba drivers show their support for everything from local sports teams to charities.
MPI told 680 CJOB that the bestselling plates in the province — by a large margin — are those supporting the Winnipeg Jets, with 62,824 regular Jets plates sold to date, as well as 36,057 Jets Heritage plates.
Sports are a popular theme among drivers, with 36,438 Winnipeg Blue Bombers plates on Manitoba vehicles, along with Basketball Manitoba (2,622), the Brandon Wheat Kings (2,058), Winnipeg Goldeyes (1,424), and Curl Manitoba (923).

Snowmobilers of Manitoba members are showing their passion in large numbers, with 17,944 plates sold, and animal lovers are representing the Winnipeg Humane Society to the tune of 10,242 specialty plates. There are 849 Fish Futures plates in the province, as well as 617 in support of the University of Winnipeg.

A further 6,193 drivers are sporting Support Our Troops plates, 8,064 MMIWG2S plates are on vehicles across the province, and 2,212 Madox Warriors plates — in support of childhood brain cancer research — are out there as well.
For each $70 specialty plate sold, $30 goes toward a designated charity. MPI said the program has raised more than $5.5 million for charity since its inception.

MPI increasing capacity for Driver Z program
Manitoba Public Insurance (MPI) is increasing the number of spots available for its popular high school education program. On Wednesday, the Crown corporation announced it increased capacity for the fall session of Driver Z to nearly 4,700 seats, including 2,126 outside of Winnipeg. This is an increase of 500 spots since the fall 2024 session when it offered 4,200 seats available. MPI noted that this puts it on track for 10,000 seats this year, which will bring it back to pre-pandemic registration levels. MPI added that registration for the Driver Z fall session will begin on July 23 at 8 a.m. The program, which is offered in communities around the province, uses a mix of e-lessons, virtual and in-person classes, and in-car sessions to help students learn to drive safely. MPI will post the Driver Z course finder on July 18 so customers can pre-plan which course works best for them. Parents are also encouraged to complete the first few steps of registration, including setting up the new driver as an MPI customer and purchasing the Driver Z program, before registration day. On the day of registration, parents and guardians can sign up their child for the program at an Autopac broker or MPI service centre, through the MPI Contact Centre at 204-985-7000 or by calling the MPI driver education phone line at 204-985-7199.

Manitoba Motorcycle Ride for Dad specialty licence plates now available

(Scott Andersson/CTV News Winnipeg) Manitobans can now purchase a Manitoba Motorcycle Ride for Dad specialty licence plate, with each sale supporting the fight against prostate cancer. Released by Manitoba Public Insurance (MPI) on Monday, the $70 licence plate is available at any Autopac agent—with $30 from each plate going to the Manitoba Prostate Cancer Support Group. 'We're really excited,' said Ed Johner, spokesperson for Manitoba Motorcycle Ride for Dad, who purchased his specialty plates during the first possible hour. 'It's just another outlet for people who support us to be able to support us. Aside from pledging riders or just making a straightforward donation, I think it would be pretty cool to have one of these on the back of your vehicle.' Established in 2009, the organization has raised over $5.7 million for the fight against prostate cancer in the province—raising over $600,000 alone during the annual ride in May. Johner said the funds will help provide education, awareness and support to those impacted by prostate cancer in Manitoba. Johner, who was diagnosed with prostate cancer in 2007, said early detection is key with treatment of the disease. 'These [licences] are like little mini billboards that are going to be floating around all over the streets reminding men to go get checked for prostate cancer … It's just another way for us to get our message across.' He added that the specialty plate is not just for motorcycles, but for other vehicles as well. According to MPI, the new plate will be the 15th plate available to Manitobans under the specialty license plate program, which has raised over $5.5 million to date for Manitoba-based charities.
