ACME Comics and Collectibles celebrates 30 Years in Business
Acme Comics and Collectibles celebrated 30 years of business on Saturday. The business started in 1995 on Hamilton Boulevard, then moved to its current location on Pierce Street in 2001.
Saturday's celebration included raffles, a food truck and specials on comic books. There were also characters from Star Wars and Ghostbusters on hand, along with Wolverine and Spiderman-Noir to take pictures with fans.
'Back in 1995 we opened up our little store to kind of be a place for all nerds to congregate and have fun and to be themselves and here we are, 30 years later,' said Kevin McGarry, the co-owner.
If you weren't able to get to ACME Comics on Saturday, coming up on May 3rd, they will have their 24th annual 'free comic book day.' People will be able to get a free comic book between the hours of 11:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m.

The ‘Star Wars' Black Series Figure We've Been Waiting For Is Finally Here
For the past year, this is what has happened here on io9 every time Hasbro has announced a new figure for its Star Wars Black Series line. James Whitbrook: 'Germain, Hasbro just dropped some new Black Series Images.' Germain Lussier: 'Are any of them The Stranger from The Acolyte with a removable helmet revealing the face of Manny Jacinco?' Whitbrook: *Silence* 'No, it is not.' Without exaggeration, we've had that conversation at least a dozen times since the release of The Acolyte last year, every single time new Black Series have been released. But, this weekend, finally, James was able to give me a true Miracle on 34th Street moment. 'Yes, Germain, there is a Stranger Black Series.' Among a slew of new releases announced at San Diego Comic-Con 2025, our first Black Series figure of the villainous Stranger from The Acolyte, has been revealed. And while no, he doesn't have a removable helmet, he does have a removable head that swaps out to reveal the visage of Qimir. You may remember that, oddly, Qimir was the only main cast member who didn't get a toy when the Star Wars show debuted last year. And, even weirder, they didn't make a toy of the main villain. They could've easily done both, making the fearsome helmet just the figure's head to protect the spoiler. But now, it has happened. And it's worth the wait. Here are a few images. The Stranger Black Series will be available to preorder on Hasbro Pulse July 26 at 5 p.m. EST. My only concern is, do I order two? One to display as Qimir and one as the Stranger? Also, what's my obsession now? Actually, that one is easy. I want Luke Skywalker in his Crait Force Ghost outfit from the end of Star Wars: The Last Jedi. Come on, Hasbro, old buddy, don't let me down. Want more io9 news? ‘Magic: The Gathering' Swung Into the Spider-Verse at Comic-Con
We're on the cusp of the release of Magic: The Gathering's next major set, Edge of Eternities, next week, but that didn't stop Wizards of the Coast from swinging into San Diego Comic-Con to show off its next big crossover: Spider-Man. And in our first major glimpse at what to expect from the set, we got treated to a whole spider-verse of new cards—and, of course, some very nifty comic book-themed variants to get your wallet's spidey senses tingling. It's no surprise that transforming cards are going to be the name of the game in Spider-Man, given the plethora of secret identities and alter egos of friends and foes at play here. While seemingly not every Spider-Hero included in the set will get that treatment, major players like Peter Parker, Miles Morales, and Gwen Stacy will all be able to flip between their civilian identities and their hero forms. Another recurring mechanic? Summoning spider tokens—a cute nod to the origins of many a Spider-hero, although in Magic it turns Pete and his friends more into a Spiders-Man than anything else. One new mechanic coming to the set that we know of thanks to these new cards is web-slinging, although it's more that the flavor is new rather than the actual mechanic. Drawing on a plethora of other quickening mechanics from Magic's past (and its present, given the arrival of Warp in Edge of Eternities), web-slinging lets a player pay a reduced mana cost for a card at the expense of returning a tapped creature you control back to your hand. Think of it like Spidey using something—in this case, a creature on the battlefield—to zipline into the action with haste! Metaphorical haste, rather than mechanical haste, that is. Aside from introducing key heroes and villains coming to the set, the new reveals also showcased a host of variant card treatments—although with a slight twist that Spider-Man will be the first crossover set that removes the distinctive triangular border frame that has defined 'Universes Beyond' cards in the past, further enmeshing Magic's crossover experiences with original sets. Variant treatments for Spider-Man include, of course, stylized webbing frames and comic-panel-inspired alternate art, but also special comics art variants that leverage decades of Marvel Comics artwork—in some instances, turning cards into iconic comic covers, framing their rules text into a front-page spread. Magic: The Gathering's Spider-Man set begins releasing September 26. Check out even more cards revealed at SDCC below! Want more io9 news? Predator: Badlands Director Confirms the Whole Predator Carrying an Android Idea Was Inspired by Chewbacca Carrying C-3PO in Star Wars
If you've seen The Empire Strikes Back, you'll probably remember Chewbacca carrying C-3PO in pieces on his back during the escape from Cloud City scene. It's a scene that has gone on to be featured in various merchandise and even the LEGO Star Wars games. Now, it has become the unlikely inspiration behind the central idea of the upcoming Predator: Badlands movie. In Predator: Badlands, Elle Fanning's Thia strikes up an alliance with Dimitrius Schuster-Koloamatangi's young Predator, Dek. We see Thia rebooted after what looks like a fight with some sort of monster. Thia is a Weyland-Yutani synth from the nefarious megacorp from the Alien franchise. The problem is, Thia has been cut in half, and her torso must be carried by the Yautja on his back as he seeks out what is described as "a creature that can't be killed" and "the definitive apex predator." Predator: Badlands' working title, Backpack, makes a lot more sense now. It turns out, the Predator carrying a synth idea was directly inspired by Star Wars. In an interview with IGN at San Diego Comic-Con 2025, Predator director Dan Trachtenberg confirmed the link, saying: 'That was the initial inspiration for it.' Star Wars, however, wasn't the only inspiration. In prior interviews Trachtenberg has mentioned masterpiece Shadow of the Colossus as inspiring Predator: Badlands, but it turns out there are many other games that factored into the film's companion mechanic, including Half-Life 2, Uncharted, and God of War. 'There's a few that have influenced me over the years and definitely come together in this,' Trachtenberg explained. 'One would be the combination of Half-Life 2, when you meet the robot dog, it's like your pet, but you befriend it, and the reboot of Prince of Persia, and Uncharted where it's like having the companion along with the journey makes it that much more rich and entertaining. And then of course, the 2018 God of War. All of that influenced the nature of Dek and Thia in this movie, along with many other things.' Predator fans will be keen to see how this plays out when Badlands hits theaters on November 7, but they will also be keen to see how far the clear Alien links go. Wesley is Director, News at IGN.
