Sabah needs children's hospice, says Sandakan MP

SANDAKAN: The pressing need for improved paediatric palliative care in Malaysia, particularly in Sabah, took centre stage at the launch of Sepeda Amal Borneo 2025, here in Sandakan on Sunday. Sandakan Member of Parliament, Vivian Wong Shir Yee stressed that palliative care for children is not just a medical necessity but a crucial part of a holistic healthcare system. She cited a recent The Star report which revealed that Malaysia has only six paediatric palliative care specialists under the Ministry of Health, despite an estimated 9 million children who may benefit from such services. 'Our country is in dire need of more specialists in this field. I urge the Ministry of Health to give serious attention to this issue and increase training and funding so that we can better support these children and their families,' she said. Vivian's opening remarks was delivered by her special officer, CK Teo before the flag-off ceremony. This year's Sepeda Amal Borneo fundraising event supports the Malaysian Association of Paediatric Palliative Care (Mappac), an organisation providing holistic care to children with life-limiting illnesses and at the end of life. Vivian also expressed strong support for Mappac's initiative to establish Sabah's first children's hospice, calling it a timely and vital step for the state. 'I fully support this effort and hope that both the federal and Sabah state governments will work together to make this hospice a reality,' she added. As part of the programme, 17 cyclists from various professional and national backgrounds will embark on a 600-kilometre journey from Sandakan to Kota Kinabalu over six days. Vivian praised the dedication and spirit of the participants. 'I am truly inspired by the commitment of all involved. Your journey is not just a physical challenge but a powerful statement of compassion and unity,' she said. Organised by the Malaysia Medical Association (MMA), Sepeda Amal Borneo is now in its fourth year. The programme continues to raise awareness and funds for critical healthcare causes, while fostering community involvement and advocacy. RM40 biliion allocation to implement healthcare reforms

Kuala Lumpur: The Federal Government has allocated RM40 billion under the 13th Malaysia Plan (13MP) 2026 to 2030 to implement wide-ranging reforms in the healthcare sector, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim announced Thursday. He said the healthcare reform agenda is a vital government initiative to ensure sustainable health financing while expanding access to quality and affordable healthcare services for all Malaysians, which is also aimed at increasing service options for patients without compromising on cost or quality. To strengthen medical supply security, Anwar said domestic pharmaceutical manufacturing would be encouraged, while the use of generic medicines in both the public and private sectors would be significantly increased. 'Pro-health taxes will be expanded from sugar to products such as tobacco, vape and alcohol, not just for revenue but to encourage behavioural change and curb the increase in non-communicable diseases (NCDs) which is increasingly worrying,' he said. Another key objective of the reform, Anwar said, is to reduce the out-of-pocket healthcare expenses borne by citizens. Under the 13MP, more hospitals and clinics - including those in dilapidated condition - will be built or upgraded to improve healthcare delivery nationwide. Major projects slated for development include Hospital Tuanku Ja'afar 2 in Seremban, Hospital Sultanah Aminah 2 in Johor Bahru, the Northern Region Cancer Centre in Sungai Petani, the Sabah Heart Centre at Hospital Queen Elizabeth II in Kota Kinabalu, and the Sarawak Cancer Centre. To address long-standing workforce challenges, the government will also introduce a national framework for health sector talent development. 'This includes initiatives covering pre-service training, licensing, recruitment, placement, and career development, all aimed at retaining and nurturing skilled professionals in the healthcare system,' Anwar said. Anwar also announced that health record management will be strengthened as part of the core strategy for digitising Malaysia's healthcare infrastructure, which will enhance interoperability between healthcare facilities and enable seamless patient data access. Sabah, Sarawak now mandatory for medical officer placements
KUALA LUMPUR: The Ministry of Health (MOH) has introduced a mandatory requirement for contract medical officers transitioning to permanent roles to select at least one placement option in Sabah or Sarawak via the e-Placement 2.0 system. This move aims to bridge the healthcare workforce disparity between Peninsular Malaysia and the Borneo states. Health Minister Datuk Seri Dr Dzulkefly Ahmad stated that this unprecedented measure underscores the government's dedication to equitable specialist, doctor, and nurse distribution nationwide. 'It is mandatory that one of the three choices must be a placement in Sabah or Sarawak, which has never been done before,' he said during the Dewan Rakyat session. The policy responds to concerns raised by Datuk Dr Richard Rapu (GPS-Betong) regarding uneven healthcare staffing. Dzulkefly revealed that placement quotas for permanent medical officers have been set at 650 for Sarawak and 310 for Sabah, accounting for 42.7 per cent of the 2,248 officers recently appointed. As of March 31, 1,002 contract medical officers were stationed in Sabah and 937 in Sarawak to bolster public health facilities. Long-term strategies include state-sponsored medical scholarships and merit incentives for service in remote areas. 'This merit serves as a weightage - an added score in evaluating candidates for scholarship selection,' Dzulkefly explained. Health Minister Datuk Seri Dr Dzulkefly Ahmad said this approach, which has never been implemented before, reflects the government's strong commitment to narrowing the gap in the placement of specialists, doctors, and nurses across the country. 'It is mandatory that one of the three choices must be a placement in Sabah or Sarawak, which has never been done before,' said Dzulkefly during the oral question-and-answer session in the Dewan Rakyat today. He was responding to Datuk Dr Richard Rapu (GPS-Betong), who asked about measures taken by the government to reduce the imbalance in the distribution of healthcare human resources between Peninsular Malaysia, Sabah, and Sarawak, particularly concerning the placement of specialists, doctors, and nurses.
