Chef loses 6 stone in 18 months only having one thing before 12pm
Ricky set out to lose weight after the death of his 15-year-old brother and ditched 30% of his body weight
Ricky before his weight loss
A man who decided to lose weight so he could take part in a rugby match in honour of his brother managed to ditch six stone in 18 months. Ricky Emery, 40 from Bridgend has lost over 6 stone with the help of his local MAN v FAT Football club, since starting the programme 18 months ago.
Ricky said: 'My 15 year-old brother sadly passed away in the summer of 2023, and in his memory, our community organised a memorial rugby match that was due to take place on Boxing Day later that year. It was a bit of a wake-up call to be honest, as I knew that I needed to get fit and shift weight fast. So, I joined MAN v FAT Bridgend, a local club that helps men in the area lose weight through weekly football and healthy lifestyle coaching sessions.
'Joining MAN v FAT was a revelation. The mix of playing team sports again and the incentive of losing weight through doing so was a brilliant motivation factor for me.

'The best thing about MAN v FAT is all abilities can join and contribute, whether you are young or old. And it's not just about the scores on the pitch, because how you do during the week in terms of your own weight loss matters as well. I would definitely recommend it to anyone who is looking to lose weight, in fact I have - and a few of my mates have joined the club too.
Around 8,500 men currently take part at more than 150 MAN v FAT Football clubs across the UK.

The programme was created to differ from traditional weight loss classes and combines the game with weight loss goals for men.
Designed for overweight and obese men with a BMI of above 27.5, at a typical MAN v FAT session, players are weighed, before battling it out on the pitch where results from matches combine with a player's individual weight loss throughout a week. Individual weight loss results and scores on the pitch then contribute to a team's position in a club's overall league table.
The total amount of weight lost by MAN v FAT players in the UK currently stands at more than 800,000 pounds. In addition to football sessions, MAN v FAT players receive off-the-pitch support including healthy meal recipe ideas and tips on general fitness.
Ricky has lost more than six stone
Rick said: 'I joined the programme weighing 20 stone, with my initial goal at the time being to reduce my weight to 15.5 stone. I have managed to reduce my weight to just under 14 stone - basically I've lost 30 per cent of my starting bodyweight since joining MAN v FAT.
'The weight loss hasn't been the only benefit of joining though. I've met so many new people and gone from having a quite sedentary life to now being very active. I play five-a-side football and go to the gym three times a week, so I'm feeling a lot fitter and a lot stronger than I was before starting to lose weight. There has been a massive improvement in my lifestyle and that can only be a good thing.
'The hardest thing about losing weight for me was staying consistent. I am a chef, so I am around food all of the time and would regularly drink a lot after work. MAN v FAT gave me the incentive I needed to cut down on both.
'Before I started MAN v FAT an average breakfast was a Greggs bacon roll with extra bacon and a milky coffee with loads of sugar. Or I'd have a full on fry up. Now, I fast until midday every day only drinking black coffee with sweetener until then. Then, my first meal is something high protein like Greek yogurt with berries or overnight oats with added protein. I used to pick and snack all day at work so didn't really have lunch. Now - my average lunch could be something like a jacket potato with cottage cheese or baked beans to keep me full until the evening.
Ricky has lost more than six stone
'In the past, that evening meal would have been a big bowl of pasta with varying sauces and loads of cheese with some sort of dessert to finish. Now, I eat lean protein like chicken, turkey mince, or steak, with veggies and a small amount of carbs followed by a protein shake or yogurt for something sweet.
'If there was something that I learned about losing weight, it's that you need to be prepared to step out of your comfort zone. Try something new and find a form of exercise - but that you enjoy doing. That's what made MAN v FAT so perfect for me.'
In addition to football sessions, MAN v FAT players receive off-the-pitch support including healthy meal recipe ideas and tips on general fitness. Players also get free access to a bespoke mental health platform through MAN v FAT partners, JAAQ.

2025 will see MAN v FAT expand its offering with the launch of 10 new rugby-based weight loss clubs across the UK. The rugby clubs will follow MAN v FAT's key principles, offering overweight and obese men the opportunity to lose weight at a sustainable pace, through weekly rugby, health, and wellbeing sessions.

Kilgetty cyclist completes Le Loop's Tour de France route
Ceri Stone, from Kilgetty, took on the challenge once again as part of Le Loop, a charity ride that follows the exact course of the Tour de France, just one week ahead of the professionals. This year's route covered more than 3,500 kilometres and more than 55,000 metres of climbing over 21 days. Mr Stone, who grew up in Begelly and was educated at Pentlepoir CP and Greenhill Comprehensive, is believed to be the first person from Pembrokeshire to complete the feat. He said: "This year's tour was the toughest so far. "I put it down to two reasons: the first is that I was ill for the first three days of the event and regularly had to stop for comfort breaks in cornfields. "I don't know how I made it through those first few days. "I put it down to determination and resilience and also the fact that I have been so well supported by my sponsors that I could not let them down." Le Loop raises funds for the William Wates Memorial Trust, and this year's ride has already brought in £435,000. Mr Stone is a member of the Pembrokeshire Dragons Cycling Club and credits the club with helping him prepare for the challenge. He is also the author of Le Loop, How to Cycle the Tour de France, which tells the story of his 2019 ride. This year's route began in Lille on June 28 and was described as the toughest in more than 50 years. Only about half of the 50 riders who started the challenge completed every stage. Mr Stone said: "Despite all of this I somehow found an inner resolve to ensure that I made it to Paris, having cycled every single inch of the route. "I have now cycled 71 stages of the Tour de France, but I am pretty sure that is my last." At 58, Mr Stone celebrated his achievement with a glass of champagne in Paris, though he says he isn't ready to commit to riding the tour again just yet.

Plenty of Wrexham AFC games selected for live TV coverage
The EFL and Sky Sports have confirmed the latest broadcast selections, with 120 EFL fixtures set to be broadcast between September 30 and January 5, 2026. The Reds' Championship clash at home to Birmingham City will now be played on Friday, October 3, kicking off at 8pm. Both of last season's match-ups between the promotion rivals were broadcast live, with Birmingham coming out on top 3-1 in front of Tom Brady, David Beckham and Rob McElhenney at St Andrews. The return at The Racecourse finished up 1-1. Wrexham will hope their home clash with Coventry City won't be a Halloween horror show! Plenty of treats and no tricks will be the wish for the October 31 meeting, which gets underway at 8pm. Just a few days later, Wrexham's lengthy trek to Portsmouth - on November 5 (8pm) - is sure to provide fireworks for a TV audience. Then, on Wednesday, December 10, the Reds' trip to Hull City will be the next TV match, starting at 8pm. The all-Wales clash between Swansea City and Wrexham will be shown at 8pm on Friday, December 19, while it's sure to be a Christmas cracker when Phil Parkinson's Reds host Sheffield United on Boxing Day (5.30pm). Wrexham's trip to Ewood Park to tackle Blackburn Rovers will also be shown live on New Year's Day (12.30pm). Each regular League weekend fixture round will see up to 10 live EFL fixtures shown, with matches on a Saturday afternoon at 12.30pm, as well as frequent slots on a Friday night and Sunday afternoon. There will be additional selected picks on a Thursday and Monday evening. League 1 predictions and best bets for 2025/26 season
League 1 tips: There might have been football played all summer, but for fans of League One, it's been nearly 13 weeks since the normal season ended back in May. But the wait is almost over, their season kicks off this weekend with Luton versus AFC Wimbledon opening proceedings on Friday night. Last season, these two sides were two leagues apart, but following Luton's second relegation in successive seasons and Wimbledon winning the League 2 play-offs, they will be battling it out to get the first points on the board. League One prediction: Luton to keep up their yo-yo form After playing in the Premier League just two seasons ago, it's no surprise to see Luton are the favourites to be celebrating promotion in May in the League One odds. But after winning just 19 of their last 84 league games, they will need to hope they can stop the rot and quickly if they are to move back up the leagues. Manager Matt Bloomfield will be buoyed by how they ended the season, though, when three wins from their last four almost saw them pull off a great escape. In the end, they went down on goal difference from Hull City, which, after going 12 games without a win between Boxing Day and 1 March, was quite an achievement. Bloomfield replaced Rob Edwards in January, and he will also be aware that he needs a good start to life this season after winning just six of his 20 games in charge, but he knows League One well and when he left Wycombe to take charge of Luton, they were second in the league and had enjoyed a 19-match unbeaten run. They have made eight signings so far, including striker Nahki Wells and defender Hakeem Odoffin, who was Rotherham's player of the season last season. They have some real quality in their squad, and on paper, you would expect them to be challenging for promotion from the off, but their mindset will have to be right as travelling to Burton and Exeter is a far cry from Old Trafford and Anfield. But in Bloomfield, they have a manager with lower league experience as a player and a manager who will demand that his players do the basics right. It is hard to see much further than them or Huddersfield Town, who the football betting sites have as second favourites to be crowned champions. There is no Birmingham type in the league this season, and the other two relegated sides, Cardiff and Plymouth, have probably found their level. League One betting: The other Hatters to enjoy success too If we're backing Luton to win the league, then it's worth looking at Huddersfield to be promoted. They finished 10th last season and lost eight of their last 10 matches under caretaker manager Jon Worthington. He replaced Michael Duff, who was sacked in March after they suffered their fourth defeat in five and dropped out of the play-off places with 10 games of the season to go. The club has been bold in their new direction, appointing Lee Grant as their new boss on a three-year deal. Although highly experienced as a coach, this is his first managerial appointment, but he did spend the last three years working under Kieran McKenna at Ipswich. He might have been a goalkeeper, but based on the signings he's made, he wants to play attacking football, and they have a real goal threat in their side. They have made 11 signings so far, but the real stand-out arrivals are USA international winger Lyndon Gooch, who arrives from Stoke City on a three-year contract and striker Alfie May, who joined for an undisclosed fee from Birmingham. The 32-year-old scored 16 goals for the Blues last season as they won the League One title, so we know what he is capable of at this level. Betting sites are offering 9/4 on them to achieve promotion, either automatically or via the play-offs. A dark horse for promotion could be Stockport County, who were beaten in the Play-Off semi-finals last season. Manager Dave Challinor took them from the National League up to League One and only finished five points behind Wrexham, who finished second last season. The club has held on to their highly rated manager, after he was linked with a lot of vacancies over the summer, and persuaded him to sign a new three-year deal. They have also smashed their transfer record to sign striker Malik Mothersille from Peterborough on a three-year deal. He scored 16 goals in 57 appearances for Posh last season and is believed to have cost more than the £800,000 the club paid for Ian Thomas-Moore in 1998. They were the joint second-highest scorers in the league last season, behind just Birmingham, so it's clear to see their attacking intent. League One tips: What a load of Cobblers I don't think anyone is underestimating the enormity of the job AFC Wimbledon have on their hands to stay in League One, but to be evens to be relegated seems harsh. They beat Walsall in the League 2 Play-Off final in May to return to the third tier after a three-year absence. They finished fifth in the table, just five points behind the third automatic promotion place, but they were 11 behind the champions, Doncaster Rovers. They kick off their campaign with a baptism of fire as they face highly fancied Luton Town at Kenilworth Road, and they will be hoping to catch them cold. One big concern for them is a lack of goals; they only scored 56 goals on their way to promotion, which was by far the lowest of the teams around them. They are not helped in their cause by the fact that forward Osman Foyo has been charged by the Football Association with breaching betting rules, so could be facing a lengthy ban. James Tilley, 27, is the only forward who has come into the club, and he has scored just 32 senior goals. Based on the research, it's clear to see why they are the favourites, and it could be a long season for Wombles fans. Another team who are expected to be down there next season are Northampton Town, who only narrowly avoided relegation in May, by five points. They won just two of their last 10 matches, and manager Kevin Nolan has won just seven of the 25 games he has been in charge of since replacing Jon Brady in December. A price of 11/8 on betting apps is not one to overlook here. League 1 relegation prediction: Northampton to be relegated - 11/8 Bet365 League One betting tips: May to be celebrating in May It's no surprise that new Huddersfield striker Alfie May is favourite to finish as top scorer at odds of 11/2, after all, he scored 16 goals in this league last season, from just 27 starts. But will he get the service he enjoyed at Birmingham? The Blues were the leading scorers in the league with 84 goals in their 46 games, but May did finish just three behind Jay Stansfield, who cost £15m. Two seasons ago, he netted 27 goals at this level for Charlton and 22 the season before and 26 in 2021/22, so we can expect 20+ if he is playing week in week out. We have also already mentioned Malik Mothersille, who also scored 16 goals last season, although only 12 were in the League, and the other four helped Peterborough win the EFL Trophy. We know Stockport will score goals, so expect his numbers to go up, and you can get 25/1 on him finishing top scorer, so he could be a good outside shout for a bet online. Please gamble responsibly When having a bet, it's vital to practice responsible gambling. Betting can be addictive and it's important to stay in control of your betting. Never treat gambling as a way to make money, never bet more than you can afford and when the fun stops, stop.
