Woman Accuses Padma Awardee Monk Kartik Maharaj Of Rape, Threats, And Abortion
Last Updated:
A woman accused Swami Pradiptananda of Bharat Sevashram Sangha of raping her under the guise of offering a job for over a decade. An investigation is underway.
A woman has accused Swami Pradiptananda, also known as Kartik Maharaj of Bharat Sevashram Sangha, of raping her under the guise of offering her a job. According to her complaint, the alleged abuse spanned over a decade, with ashram members involved and forcing her to undergo an abortion. This revelation comes a day after the woman's initial accusation.
The woman in her complaint said that she met Kartik Maharaj in 2012 when he offered her a job at Chanak Adivasi Abasik Balika Vidyalaya, in Murshidabad district of West Bengal, where, she alleged, he raped her.
According to the Hindustan Times, in her complaint, she further alleged that she received a call from Kartik Maharaj on June 12, and he asked her to meet him on June 13 near Berhampore Correctional Home.
'I talked to Kartik Maharaj over the phone on June 12. Two men from the ashram came to see me on June 13 and said they would take me to Beldanga. When I boarded their car, these men threatened me and asked me not to contact Kartik Maharaj ever again. Thereafter, they pushed me out of the vehicle and drove off," the three-page complaint written in Bengali said.
Based on her complaint, an FIR was filed at the Lalbagh police station in Murshidabad district on Thursday under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita. ASP Raspreet Singh stated that an investigation is currently underway. However, as of the time of reporting, the Murshidabad police had not yet taken any action against the monk.
While addressing a public event in Beldanga, Kartik Maharaj sought to defend himself. 'I can only say that monks are not allowed to spend nights at the women's hostel of the ashram," he said.
Among the nine Padma Shri awardees from West Bengal this year, Kartik Maharaj was essentially an unknown figure until May 2024. This was when a controversy arose after Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee targeted a group of monks during her campaign for the Lok Sabha elections.
Defending the seer, BJP's Berhampore unit chief Malay Mahajan said, 'This is dirty politics by TMC, which wants to defame Kartik Maharaj. The Hindus will retaliate." TMC spokesperson Jay Prakash Majumdar said, 'No sin can be washed off or justified… Law should take its course without seeing his faith."

West Bengal: BJP leader arrested for allegedly stealing gold from jewellery shop; TMC shares his pics with major leaders
Somnath Sahoo, a BJP leader from West Bengal, has been arrested for allegedly stealing 100 grams of gold from a jewellery shop. The incident has caused a stir in West Midnapore's political circle. Trinamool Congress (TMC) shared a clip of the alleged incident on social media. 'Locals caught him while he was trying to flee and handed him over to the police,' it wrote on Twitter (now X). 'The party that claims to be the guardian of law and order is busy sheltering criminals!' Mamata Banerjee's party added. TMC State General Secretary Kunal Ghosh claimed on social media that the BJP Yuva Morcha leader from Habibpur had been caught by Odisha Police while stealing jewellery worth ₹ 25 lakh. 'CCTV footage exposes him. Locals caught him while he was trying to flee and handed him over to the police,' Ghosh wrote while sharing the accused's photo with BJP State President, Sukanta Majumdar, also Minister of State for Education of India. He also shared Sahoo's photo with actor-turned-politician Hiran Chatterjee, a BJP MLA. 'What link does the BJP State President have with a thief? Has he got a share? Clarify please. Whether these are facts or not,' Ghosh added. Sujoy Hazra, West Midnapore district TMC president, has mocked the BJP. 'BJP leaders are involved in human trafficking, drugs, and gold smuggling. This man says he's not with the BJP, but in this district, the BJP hardly exists. If you check, you'll find many BJP workers with similar shady records,' he said. BJP has claimed that Somnath Sahoo was once associated with the party but holds no post now. It added that Odisha, a BJP-ruled state, had arrested him without bias. That should be a lesson for Bengal's ruling party about good governance, it added. According to Anandabazar Patrika sources, Somnath was caught while trying to flee after stealing from a jewellery store in Jaleswar, Odisha. TMC claims he still holds the post of district youth wing secretary in the BJP. BJP's district spokesperson Arup Das denied any current link with Somnath. However, he claims Somnath's name may still appear on the party list because a new committee has yet to be formed. 'He was once connected to the BJP, but there's been no contact for over a year and a half,' the publication quoted Das as saying. 'TMC has no right to speak about such issues. They shelter murderers and rapists.' Arup added. MLA Hiran Chattopadhyay has said he doesn't feel awkward. 'Odisha BJP government and its police acted without bias and arrested a criminal. I praise them. The photo seems to be from the 2021 election campaign. Hundreds took photos with me. I can't know who among them is a thief or not,' he said.

Kolkata law student gangrape: BJP demands Mamata Banerjee's resignation
New Delhi, June 28 (UNI) The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) today slammed the Trinamool Congress (TMC)-led West Bengal government over the alleged gangrape of a 24-year-old law student in Kolkata, accusing the state administration of shielding the accused, who reportedly have links to the ruling party's student wing. Addressing a press conference, BJP national spokesperson Sambit Patra said that the brutal incident had not only shaken the conscience of the nation but also exposed what he called 'the institutional complicity' in West Bengal. 'This is not a matter where we seek clarification. We are demanding accountability. Mamata Banerjee must apologise and step down,' Patra said, questioning the "silence and inaction" of the State Chief Minister. He said, 'In a state governed by a woman Chief Minister, one would expect a stronger commitment to women's safety. But this level of cruelty and insensitivity is nothing short of terrifying.' While citing a slew of recent past rape cases reported from the State, Patra also condemned Trinamool party leaders reportedly making statements that 'the incident occurred inside the law college and the state government has nothing to do with it". Referring to the accused, Patra alleged that the primary suspect, Manojit Mishra, had previously held a position within the TMC's student wing. 'This is not just a case of sexual violence. The circumstances and the survivor's statement suggest it was a politically-enabled act of brutality,' he said, holding up the pictures of the primary accused with the TMC party's leaders. According to police, the assault occurred on the evening of June 15 inside South Calcutta Law College, located in Kolkata's Kasba area. The survivor, a first-year law student, was allegedly pinned down by two men while the third assaulted her in a security guard's room, after evicting the guard. Three accused—Manojit Mishra (31), Zaib Ahmed (19), and Pramit Mukhopadhyay (20)—were arrested within 24 hours of the complaint. On Saturday, police arrested the college's 55-year-old security guard, Pinaki Banerjee, for allegedly aiding the accused, bringing the total number of arrests to four. The First Information Report (FIR) reveals harrowing details, a portion of which were shared by Patra to the reporters. The survivor, in her statement, said she was ambushed shortly after a meeting linked to the TMC's student wing. Identified by the initials 'M', 'J', and 'P', the men allegedly cornered her around 7:30 PM. 'I begged him to let me go… I told him I had a boyfriend, that I loved him. I even touched his feet,' the complaint reads. Despite her pleas, the FIR said, she was reportedly dragged into a security room, beaten with a hockey stick, and threatened with violence against her loved ones. Hours after the ordeal, the survivor was released under threats to remain silent. Yet, she chose to speak up. 'Today, I've made up my mind. I want justice. As a law student, I now stand as a victim. And I want justice to be served,' she stated in her complaint. In response to the incident, BJP President JP Nadda has constituted a four-member fact-finding team comprising former Union Ministers Satpal Singh and Meenakshi Lekhi, along with MPs Biplab Deb and Manan Mishra. The team will visit the site, meet stakeholders, and submit a report to the party's top leadership, said Patra. UNI AJ RN

Puja Banerjee, husband face FIR by Goa Police for abducting, extorting money from Bengali filmmaker
Goa: TV actor couple Puja Banerjee and Kunal Verma have found themselves in the legal hotseat after the Goa Police filed a FIR against the couple for allegedly abducting and extorting money from Bengali filmmaker Shyam Sunder Dey, officials said on Saturday. An FIR was first filed at Panache police station in Kolkata on June 12 based on a complaint by Dey's wife, Malabika, against the actor couple. However, since the alleged incident took place in North Goa, the case was later transferred to the Calangute Police, a police official told PTI. As per the FIR, the accused seized the victim's two mobile phones, forcibly extracted his personal data and passwords, and threatened to misuse them. A police official said Dey had been asked to appear before Goa Police for recording his statement. "We have asked him to appear before the investigating officer as soon as possible," the official said. Goa Police booked the actor couple, Piyush Kothari, and others on the charges of kidnapping, assault, and extortion. Dey's wife stated in the FIR that her husband shared a familial relationship with Banerjee and Verma, who offered to fund his business project. Dey has 50 films to his credit. "He is frequently approached by investors and lenders for his film projects, and in that capacity developed a close, almost a family relationship with Kunal and Puja, who had offered him to fund for his business project," the complaint reads. She claimed that her husband was working on a script writing assignment and driving a rented car with his assistant in Goa on May 31 when he was abducted. "On May 31, a black-coloured vehicle intercepted Shyam Sunder's car and he was abducted by goons, Puja Banerjee and Kothari. He was forcefully taken to an unknown location, where he was assaulted and tortured by Banerjee, Kunal Verma, and the hired goons," Malabika alleged. The accused threatened the filmmaker with false implication in a narcotics case if he failed to pay ₹ 64 lakh. "During this illegal confinement, the accused seized his two mobile phones, forcibly extracted his personal data and passwords, and threatened to misuse them," the FIR stated. The victim was taken to a hotel where he was staying and then moved to an unknown villa on June 1. Malabika alleged that her husband managed to arrange and pay approximately ₹ 23 lakh to the accused between May 31 and June 3 under immense mental pressure. She wrote an email on June 3 to concerned senior police officers in Goa who managed to rescue her husband on June 4.
