West Bengal: BJP leader arrested for allegedly stealing gold from jewellery shop; TMC shares his pics with major leaders
Somnath Sahoo, a BJP leader from West Bengal, has been arrested for allegedly stealing 100 grams of gold from a jewellery shop. The incident has caused a stir in West Midnapore's political circle.
Trinamool Congress (TMC) shared a clip of the alleged incident on social media.
'Locals caught him while he was trying to flee and handed him over to the police,' it wrote on Twitter (now X).
'The party that claims to be the guardian of law and order is busy sheltering criminals!' Mamata Banerjee's party added.
TMC State General Secretary Kunal Ghosh claimed on social media that the BJP Yuva Morcha leader from Habibpur had been caught by Odisha Police while stealing jewellery worth ₹ 25 lakh.
'CCTV footage exposes him. Locals caught him while he was trying to flee and handed him over to the police,' Ghosh wrote while sharing the accused's photo with BJP State President, Sukanta Majumdar, also Minister of State for Education of India. He also shared Sahoo's photo with actor-turned-politician Hiran Chatterjee, a BJP MLA.
'What link does the BJP State President have with a thief? Has he got a share? Clarify please. Whether these are facts or not,' Ghosh added.
Sujoy Hazra, West Midnapore district TMC president, has mocked the BJP.
'BJP leaders are involved in human trafficking, drugs, and gold smuggling. This man says he's not with the BJP, but in this district, the BJP hardly exists. If you check, you'll find many BJP workers with similar shady records,' he said.
BJP has claimed that Somnath Sahoo was once associated with the party but holds no post now. It added that Odisha, a BJP-ruled state, had arrested him without bias. That should be a lesson for Bengal's ruling party about good governance, it added.
According to Anandabazar Patrika sources, Somnath was caught while trying to flee after stealing from a jewellery store in Jaleswar, Odisha. TMC claims he still holds the post of district youth wing secretary in the BJP.
BJP's district spokesperson Arup Das denied any current link with Somnath. However, he claims Somnath's name may still appear on the party list because a new committee has yet to be formed.
'He was once connected to the BJP, but there's been no contact for over a year and a half,' the publication quoted Das as saying.
'TMC has no right to speak about such issues. They shelter murderers and rapists.' Arup added.
MLA Hiran Chattopadhyay has said he doesn't feel awkward.
'Odisha BJP government and its police acted without bias and arrested a criminal. I praise them. The photo seems to be from the 2021 election campaign. Hundreds took photos with me. I can't know who among them is a thief or not,' he said.

Saquib Abdul Hamid Nachan, an accused with alleged links to the terror outfit Islamic State (ISIS), passed away at Safdarjung Hospital in Delhi. He was convicted for his involvement in the bomb blasts in Mumbai in 2002 and 2003. Nachan, a former member of the banned Students Islamic Movement of India (SIMI), died during brain stroke treatment, the Tihar Jail authorities informed on Saturday, as per IANS. Who Is Saquib Nachan? As per the National Investigation Agency (NIA), Saquib Nachan was a habitual offender in several previous terror cases and was also a self-styled Amir-e-Hind for ISIS in India. He first came under the scanner in 1991 and was later arrested for plotting terror strikes in Gujarat. In the late 1990s, the Supreme Court convicted him of terrorist activities, and he was convicted for orchestrating three bomb blasts in Mumbai between December 2002 and March 2003- in Mumbai Central, Vile Parle, and Mulund. Found guilty of several acts, including murder, arms and explosives possession, he received a 10-year sentence until 2017. According to IANS, Nachan (65) was also accused of declaring a village in Maharashtra's Thane district as 'Al Sham', referring to it as an independent Islamic-ruled territory. Saquib Nachan In Jail ANI on Saturday reported, citing sources, that Nachan died in the Delhi Hospital and added that he had been in judicial custody in Tihar Jail since 2023 and was admitted to the hospital a few days ago. NIA's Chargesheet In June 2024, the NIA had charge-sheeted Saquib Nachan along with 16 other hardcore operatives of the banned terror group in connection with the Delhi-Padgha ISIS terror module case. The charges involved a wide-ranging conspiracy to recruit and radicalise youth, and fabricate improvised IEDs. The accused were booked under multiple sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC), the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UA(P)A), the Arms Act, and the Explosive Substances Act. The arrested individuals were part of a major plot to indoctrinate vulnerable youth, train them in terror activities, and raise funds for the banned organisation. Investigations revealed that Nachan and his associates had been sharing digital files related to IED-making, actively raising funds, and carrying out preparatory acts for possible terrorist strikes across the country.

The Trinamool leader distanced the party from the prime accused Manojit Mishra — a TMCP leader. 'TMC is a big party. Someone or the other is associated with Trinamool everywhere. NEW DELHI: Congress MP Shashi Tharoor on Saturday reacted to his cryptic bird post, apparently directed towards the party's top leadership. Tharoor dismissed to talk about his reported rift with the grand old party publicly, and said that if there were issues to discuss, they would be "discussed privately". "I am not going to get into political issues here. If there are issues to discuss, they would be discussed privately, and when the time comes, I shall do so," he said speaking to reporters at an event in Ahmedabad. Tharoor's growing rift with the Congress Party has come into sharper focus following his recent remarks and social media posts that appeared to challenge the party's leadership. "Don't ask permission to fly. The wings are yours. And the sky belongs to no one," the post said. The post drew response from Congress leader Manickam Tagore, who said, without taking any names, "Don't ask permission to fly. Moreover, tensions between Tharoor and Congress leadership rose after he praised PM Modi 's diplomacy during Operation Sindoor in a Hindu article, describing his 'energy' and 'dynamism' as assets for India's global standing. The PMO shared the piece, fuelling speculation about Tharoor's loyalty. Congress chief Mallikarjun Kharge indirectly rebuked him, suggesting his praise for PM Modi was inappropriate. "We say nation first, but some consider Modi first, country later. What can we do about that?" he asked. Tharoor, however, clarified that his remarks reflected national interest, not support for the BJP.
