[UPDATED] Asean commits to deepen economic ties with GCC, external partners

KUALA LUMPUR: Asean is committed to intensifying its economic engagements by deepening cooperation with external partners and expanding ties with new and emerging partners.
In a joint statement following the 46th Asean Summit, Asean leaders said this includes region-to-region linkages such as those with the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC).
"Asean is also committed to intensifying its economic engagements by deepening cooperation with external partners and expanding engagement with new and emerging partners, including region-to-region linkages such as with the GCC.
"Together, these efforts will reinforce Asean's resilience, expand and enhance economic opportunities, and secure its position as a dynamic and forward-looking hub of global trade and investment," they said.
Amid global challenges, the regional bloc said Asean remains committed to being a reliable economic partner to all, and will continue to advance regional economic integration by strengthening and expanding existing economic partnerships, as well as seeking new opportunities for economic cooperation.
These efforts will be anchored in mutual respect, shared values, and a common goal of peace and prosperity.
"We stand ready to work constructively with all partners to advance and support a resilient, inclusive, and rules-based multilateral trading system for the benefit of our peoples and economies."
It also reaffirmed strengthening Asean's resilience by further deepening internal trade and investment.
This includes accelerating priority initiatives, including the Asean Digital Economy Framework Agreement and the upgrade of the Asean Trade in Goods Agreement.
"We are confident that these efforts will reinforce regional integration, boost business certainty and competitiveness, and ensure Asean remains cohesive, agile and responsive to emerging challenges."
The regional bloc added that it would also leverage, modernise, and upgrade Asean Plus One Free Trade Agreements (FTAs) and the Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (RCEP) in mitigating the risk of global trade uncertainties and supply chain disruptions.
This would be done while ensuring they remain modern, comprehensive, and inclusive, whilst, in parallel, strengthening and boosting intra-Asean trade and investment, and responsive to 21st-century economic realities.
They would also enhance Asean's internal coordination, making full use of existing cross-sectoral mechanisms and the newly established Asean Geoeconomic Task Force.
"To this end, we task relevant ministers to monitor the current global economic challenges and to coordinate as appropriate for a strategic and coherent Asean response," they said.
They added that the Asean Outlook on the Indo-Pacific (AOIP) is a vital instrument and primary framework that guides Asean's engagement of all its partners, anchored in the principles of Asean-centred, openness, inclusivity, transparency, resilience, and rules-based order regional architecture that upholds international law.

Ahmad Zahid wants Malaysia's rural agenda to serve as regional model for Asean

PUTRAJAYA: Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi expressed hope that Malaysia's rural development agenda can serve as a model for the Asean region. Ahmad Zahid, who is also the Rural and Regional Development Minister, said his ministry would continue to elevate the rural development agenda to the regional stage when it hosts the Asean Multi-Stakeholder Dialogue on the Asean Master Plan on Rural Development again this October. In addition, Malaysia would host the Asean+3 Forum on Empowering Rural Women and Digitalisation. "Let us use this platform to showcase our best practices and position Malaysia's rural development agenda as both a regional aspiration and reference point. Malaysia must set the example for the entire region," he said at the Rural and Regional Development Ministry's monthly assembly here on Tuesday (July 1). Ahmad Zahid said his ministry has been given the mandate to plan rural community development, with an allocation of nearly RM12bil, of which RM3.37bil has been spent to date. He said the recently launched Desa Kirana initiative was being hailed as a game changer in the lead-up to Visit Malaysia 2026. According to him, the initiative aims to boost rural tourism and strengthen the local economy by empowering cultural heritage, natural attractions, traditional cuisine, handicrafts and a variety of rural-based activities. "I hope to one day see our rural gems - from Arau to Kudat, from Sabah's interior to the coast of Sarawak - emerge as world-class tourist destinations. Just like Lauterbrunnen in Switzerland, Hobbiton in New Zealand, Shirakawa-go in Japan, or Ubud in Bali - places that were once quiet but now stand proudly on the global tourism map," he said. Ahmad Zahid also said that his ministry would organise a three-dimensional Mega Carnival, which will bring together three major events simultaneously: the Rural Entrepreneur Carnival, Felda Settlers' Day, and the One District One Industry initiative. "This marks another major shift - a strategic effort to elevate rural entrepreneurs and strengthen the rural entrepreneurship ecosystem at both the national and international levels," he said. Meanwhile, he also called on the ministry's secretary-general, Datuk Muhd Khair Razman Mohamed Annuar, to review the existing training system. During the assembly, Ahmad Zahid expressed his appreciation for the dedication and hard work of the ministry's staff throughout his 940-day leadership of the ministry. – Bernama

A step closer to enhanced elders' rights

KUALA LUMPUR: The government has completed the draft for the Senior Citizens Bill, which aims to protect the rights and well-being of the elderly, says Datuk Seri Nancy Shukri. The Women, Family and Community Development Minister said it is expected to be tabled in Parliament next year. Nancy said her ministry plans to submit the draft to the Attorney-General's Chambers by the end of this year. At the moment, she said, the ministry is engaging in further consultations with industry players and state governments, including those in Sabah and Sarawak. 'What we are doing now is that we need to go back to the industry players, the stakeholders, to talk to them again. And we also have to refer to every state. 'So this is an ongoing thing because the Bill is not just for us in the peninsula. It's also for various states, especially those in the Borneo side,' she told a press conference after launching the Asean + Republic of Korea Conference on Care and Support for Older Persons here yesterday, Bernama reported. Also present were Deputy Women, Family and Community Development Minister Datuk Seri Dr Noraini Ahmad and Ambassador of the Republic of Korea to Asean, Lee Jang-keun.

Ringgit strengthens further as weak US dollar, Fed speculation lift sentiment

KUALA LUMPUR, July 1 — The ringgit extended its upward trend at Tuesday's open, buoyed by persistent weakness in the US dollar. At 8.01am, the local currency strengthened to 4.1955/2160 against the greenback from Monday's close of 4.2060/2130. The US Dollar Index (DXY) slipped further to 96.875 as investors awaited key economic data, with the 90-day pause period approaching its end. Bank Muamalat Malaysia Bhd chief economist Dr Mohd Afzanizam Abdul Rashid said the yields on two- and 10-year US Treasury notes declined by one and five basis points, respectively, as expectations grew that the US Federal Reserve (Fed) may ease monetary policy in the second half of the year. 'President Trump continues to assert on social media that interest rates should be lowered. This reinforces the view that the next Fed chair may adopt a more dovish stance,' he told Bernama. Meanwhile, Brent crude slipped 0.24 per cent to US$67.61 (RM283) per barrel. Market attention is on the upcoming Opec+ meeting on Sunday, where member countries are expected to raise output quotas to reclaim market share. At the open, the ringgit was mixed against major currencies but mostly higher versus its Asean peers. It weakened against the Japanese yen to 2.9190/9335 from 2.9156/9206, slipped versus the British pound to 5.7617/7898 from 5.7597/7693, and eased against the euro to 4.9457/9698 from 4.9290/9372. The ringgit also depreciated against the Singapore dollar to 3.3009/3176 from 3.2986/3034, but gained on the Thai baht at 12.9331/13.0059 from 12.9356/9627, strengthened against the Indonesian rupiah to 258.3/259.7 from 259.0/259.5, and firmed against the Philippine peso to 7.44/7.49 from 7.46/7.48. — Bernama
