From blogger to Singapore's top influencer: Naomi Neo celebrates 1m Instagram followers after 14 years, Lifestyle News
Fourteen years ago, Naomi Neo started out as a humble blogger.
And just a few days ago, the local content creator hit 1 million followers on Instagram.
Naomi ecstatically shared the news in an emotional Instagram post on July 3.
"In today's world, 1 million may not mean much — where a single viral moment can make anyone famous overnight," she wrote. View this post on Instagram

"But to someone like me, who's been here for 14 years and started with 10,000 on May 27, 2012… who's shared, overshared, held back, grown up, broken down and rebuilt publicly — this number means everything."
The 29-year-old said that the achievement is "not just a milestone", but "a timeline of phases, faces, mistakes, growth and everything in between". "From a girl with a big voice who wrote as a nobody online, to a mom raising two children while building brands, to the woman I'm still becoming.
"Whether you've followed me since my thin-eyebrows era (please never bring this trend back) or just joined — thank you," she wrote.
Naomi also urged others like her to not give up.
"To every aspiring creator, dreamer, or just anyone figuring it out: May you be brave enough to begin, find the space to grow and the strength to start over again - as many times as it takes," she wrote.
Naomi started blogging in 2009, writing about fashion, beauty and more personal thoughts on her blog. Her last post there was on May 22, 2017.
She uploaded her first YouTube video on Sept 15, 2012, and has around 49,000 subscribers on the platform.
On TikTok, she has about 1.9 million followers and posted her first video on Jan 8, 2020.
Amongst her fellow local influencers, Naomi has one of the highest following counts on Instagram.
Jianhao Tan, who entered the industry around the same time as Naomi, has around 738,000 followers on Instagram, while Xiaxue, also one of Singapore's popular bloggers, has about 572,000 followers on the platform.
In December last year, Naomi emerged as Singapore's top influencer once again, according to a report by media intelligence and data analytics firm Meltwater.
At that point, Naomi had around 930,000 followers on Instagram and around 450,000 on YouTube.

Andie Chen admits 'traces of loss and loneliness' after 10th acting Star Awards defeat , Entertainment News
In a race, only one person can clinch first place. For local actor Andie Chen, the Star Awards race has become a standard affair, but one he has yet to bring home a trophy from. At the 30th edition of Star Awards held last night (July 6), the 39-year-old was one of five nominees for Best Actor, for his role in the Mediacorp drama Born to Shine. However, he lost to Christopher Lee, who won for his performance in the crime series Kill Sera Sera. The 53-year-old also brought home two other awards - Best Programme Host and the Special Achievement Award. Earlier today, Andie took to Instagram to reflect: "The ceremony ended and the music started. I sat in the audience, watching the liveliness on stage - no matter how strong the heart is, traces of loss and loneliness will still flow out in that moment. "But I didn't lose heart. Because all these years, I've had my family, team, friends and all of you who have supported me. Every time you speak up for me, it motivates me to keep working hard. Thank you everyone. "Setting aside my own little theatre, I really am happy to see my friends win awards. Who's not working hard for their dreams? "Finally, to my super handsome and capable idol Christopher Lee, I'm fully convinced losing to you. Thank you for letting me see my goal. I believe that one day, I will stand beside you and we'll create amazing stories together." [[nid:716772]] Andie had been nominated for Best Actor in 2012, 2017 and 2024. He was also nominated six times for Best Supporting Actor since 2011, and was also in the running for Top 10 Most Popular Male Artistes in 2017, 2018, 2019, 2024 and this year. Despite all the nominations, he has yet to win a Star Award. View this post on Instagram A post shared by Chen Bangjun 陳邦鋆 (@andiechen) In live footage captured during the awards ceremony, moments after veteran Hong Kong star Chow Yun Fat announced Christopher's win, the camera panned to Andie in the audience. He was comforted by local actress Ya Hui, who clutched his shoulder and spoke to him, to which he responded with a nod and smile while clapping for the winner. The two belong to the 2007 batch of Star Search, where Andie was crowned champion and Ya Hui a runner-up. Others also consoled Andie, with veteran actor Chen Hanwei dedicating an Instagram post to him today. In a picture where the two walked together backstage in their red-carpet outfits, the 55-year-old wrote: "It's not that you're bad, you're very good. Just down on a little bit of luck, Andie. "Don't be discouraged, keep up your attitude and positive energy, because your attitude is your best feng shui. Keep working hard, and one day there'll definitely be a piece of the sky for you. Believe in yourself. "Of course, I still have to congratulate Christopher Lee, it was well-deserved." View this post on Instagram A post shared by Chenhanwei (@chenhanwei1969) Hanwei himself won Best Supporting Actor for his role in Unforgivable last night, which marks his third win in the category. On Andie's Instagram post, other local celebrities showed him their support in the comments section, including Aileen Tan, Apple Hong, Jeffrey Xu, Priscelia Chan and Xixi Lim. All were present at the awards ceremony last night. In a video posted by 8days, Christopher and Andie were seen interacting post-show. Andie was posing for the camera when he was spotted by the award- winner, who came over for a hug. Andie joked: "You not paiseh to come here?" before laughing and returning the embrace. Thereafter, Christopher said: "You'll surely get it next time, okay?" [[nid:719895]]

Netizens call Star Awards 2025 a 'trainwreck' despite star-studded night
Star Awards 2025 may have drawn a full house to the Theatre at Mediacorp last night (July 6), but it was the show's on-screen chaos rather than the celebrity glitz that got viewers talking. Despite being the 30th anniversary of the Star Awards, which honours achievements in local Mandarin television, the production was widely panned in a Reddit thread that quickly gained traction and hundreds of comments. Users called the show a "hosting and floor management nightmare", with some labelling it a "glorified D&D" for Mediacorp staff. Chantalle Ng 'truly dreadful' Much of the criticism was directed at co-host and actress Chantalle Ng, 30, who was accused of being unprofessional and overly focused on herself. "She was truly dreadful, sorry to say," one Reddit user wrote. "She has serious main character syndrome." Another commented: "Which host screams into the mic 'my friend!!!' when announcing an award?" Viewers also felt veteran host Guo Liang, 54, had to work overtime to carry the show. While he kept a steady hand, his attempts to build chemistry with Ng were seen as awkward, with one user declaring the pair simply had "no rapport." Acceptance speeches cut short Others pointed out that the show ran under time by about seven minutes, even after multiple winners had their acceptance speeches abruptly cut short. Among them was Jim Lim, winner for Best Theme Song, whose microphone was muted midway through his thank-you speech. "The poor bloke was just trying to blabber his thank-you speech away without realising he was muted. I just felt so mad for him," a viewer wrote. "On the bright side, I got curious and searched for that song. What an amazing gem of a song!" The show, which featured Hong Kong superstars Chow Yun Fat, 70, and Jessica Hsuan, 54, as presenters, ran for just under three hours. Hsuan also picked up a Best Actress award, which some online felt was a strange fit for a local television prize. Awkward camera angles There was also criticism of the way the production was filmed, including abrupt switches, awkward angles, and failed attempts to capture reaction shots. One user remarked: "I've seen high school plays with better production value." Despite the missteps, some fans found humour in the chaos. "It's entertaining yearly for our family precisely because it's always a trainwreck," said one Redditor. Others were more critical: "Star Awards 2025 should just be renamed the Christopher Lee Awards," wrote one user, referring to the actor's repeated wins over the years. There were also murmurs of dissatisfaction over perceived favouritism and lack of recognition for new talent. A beloved institution Nevertheless, there were positive comments about the awards show, which first began in 1994. Some left encouraging comments on Chantalle's Instagram page, with one saying: "I'm surprised that you can host well too. So proud of you!" Suggestions from netizens ranged from extending the show by 30 minutes to moving the 10pm news to a later timeslot. "Korea lets award shows run into the night. But here, we rush the biggest show of the year just to make way for the news," one commenter said. Still, for all its stumbles, the Star Awards remains one of the few annual events dedicated to celebrating local TV. As one viewer dryly put it, "I'm more surprised there are people still watching this." The New Paper has reached out to Mediacorp for comment, but did not receive a response by press time.
