Court delay after suspect, 37, arrested for murder of 102-year-old relative
Mawisa confirmed on Monday this was because DNA and fingerprint results were pending.
The man remains in custody as he absconded in connection with a 2022 rape case.
Mawisa said he had been arrested in October 2022, granted bail of R300, and warned to return to court.
He had failed to appear and a warrant for his arrest had been issued in February 2023. He had been on the run since.
The earlier rape case involved a 16-year-old victim who was walking with a friend when they allegedly encountered the suspect, who was known to her. He allegedly dragged her to his home and raped her. The case was opened at the Butterworth police station in October 2022 and remains under investigation.
The Dispatch understands the suspect is due to appear in the Butterworth magistrate's court on Tuesday for an unrelated theft case.
The elderly woman was found dead at her home on July 3. She had injuries to her upper body and was declared dead at the scene.

Body of 12-year-old girl found in Bethelsdorp
Police are calling on the community to assist with information after the gruesome discovery of a 12-year-old girl's body in Extension 31 in Bethelsdorp on Wednesday. Police spokesperson Captain Sandra Janse van Rensburg said according to preliminary reports, police responded to a complaint at a bushy area in Foxglove Street at about 12.45pm. MPs recommend an ad hoc parliament committee to investigate Mkhwanazi's allegations

He said the ad hoc committee could look into several specific issues raised by Mkhwanazi, including the disbanding of the political killings task team, the alleged removal of 121 case dockets by the minister, leadership instability in crime intelligence and the overlap in roles of the South African Police Service and the Independent Police Investigative Directorate (Ipid). 'Parliament's control over the executive means influence, not direct power. It remains advice, not command; criticism, not obstruction,' Tetyana said. The committees considered three options: a full parliamentary inquiry; invoking rule 169 to allow committees to confer; or establishing a new ad hoc committee. The latter was favoured as the least likely to cause jurisdictional overlap and the fact that it could conclude its work within a specific timeframe. MPs also proposed that any interim reports produced by the presidential commission be made available to parliament to ensure coordination and oversight without interference. The committees are expected to meet again next week to finalise the draft terms of reference and reporting timelines for the ad hoc committee. A formal recommendation is expected to be tabled in the National Assembly next Wednesday. This comes as the police service grapples with the continued fallout from Mkhwanazi's allegations. Army uniforms, machetes recovered in huge dagga plantation raid
Fourteen suspects including 10 foreigners were arrested after police uncovered a five-hectare dagga plantation which masqueraded as a vegetable farm. A co-ordinated operation led to the discovery of the dagga plantation and cultivation hub — worth hundreds of thousands of rand — in the Springfield area of Babanango in northern KwaZulu-Natal on Wednesday. During the operation — which involved Zululand, Vryheid and Ulundi police, home affairs immigration officers and Ulundi municipality crime prevention officers — pieces of army uniform, machetes and processed dagga were also found.
