Katie Sherwood urges on 'fearless' Wales ahead of clash with England

Katie Sherwood has urged Wales to show no fear in their decisive clash against reigning European champions England tomorrow.
Rhian Wilkinson's squad will face the EURO 2022 victors in their final Group D game in St Gallen on Sunday evening, standing on the brink of elimination after losses to France and the Netherlands.
Sherwood, who earned 50 Wales caps as a player, is well aware of the challenge her nation face but believes their attitude will be key if they are to upset their illustrious neighbours.
"I think they just got to go into the game with no fear," she said.
"We know the pedigree that England have, but we have a lot of pride, a lot of passion and a lot of belief.
"We've been building consistent performances but we know that England are deadly in attack, so this is about staying in the game.
"It is the final game of the Euros, we're going to need a miracle to stay in and we know we're up against real dangerous opposition.
"I want them to show that pride and passion that we know a Welsh team can."
The 2025 event marks Wales' first-ever major women's football tournament, having beaten the Republic of Ireland in a play-off match to secure a spot back in December 2024.
It has therefore been a competition full of landmarks for the side, with Jess Fishlock scoring Cymru's first goal to equalise early on against France and become the oldest ever goal scorer at a Women's Euros.
And she has not been the only standout player wearing red.
"I think someone who's really emerged in this tournament is Angharad James," Sherwood said.
"She is the heartbeat of this team, and she's only become captain within the last 12 months.
"She is a great person and a fantastic player, and hopefully she will be leading this team out in more major tournaments to come."
Sherwood was speaking at the Coronation Street Big Football Day, Powered by The National Lottery, in Trafford where she was with Jill Scott, who received Lottery funding as part of the TASS, which helped her on her journey to becoming a Euros winning Lioness.
The celebration event brought together 48 young girls from England and Wales to mark both nations' participation at Euro 2025, reflecting on The National Lottery's long-standing support for women's football development across the UK.

Hosted on the iconic Corrie Cobbles, Sherwood was joined by Scott, and several members of the Coronation Street cast to celebrate tomorrow's game.
The National Lottery have invested £6bn into grassroots sport over the last 30 years, changing the game for women's and girls' sport.
Sherwood feels it the clash is a perfect occasion for young girls to see the possibilities within sport.
"It was inevitable they were going to be drawn in the same group," she said.
"It creates a buzz for young girls at home watching the game so they can see what they can be.
"The funding from The National Lottery gives girls opportunities to have an experience in football and then nurture players and showcase their talent while seeing their role models on screen and really aspire to be playing for England or Wales one day."
It is vital input that Sherwood has seen work first-hand during and after her career on the pitch.
"I was lucky enough to be in Dublin the night that Wales secured their qualification, and was flooded with emotions," she added.
"We haven't always had the resources that we should have had in Wales so it's a breakthrough that we've been waiting for such a long time.
"To finally qualify, you think about all the sacrifices that you made as a player and those in previous generations.
"For this generation, now they have this investment and they have the funding, they can go that extra mile. You can see the benefit that it's had."
The FA's Big Football Day, powered by The National Lottery, is a celebration inviting women and girls to discover the joy, confidence and community of football. Thanks to over £6 billion invested into grassroots sport by National Lottery players, the game is growing stronger from the ground up. For more info visit: //englandfootball.com/bigfootballday

Rhian Wilkinson insists Wales not just at Euro 2025 to participate

Wales sit on the brink of a Euro 2025 exit having failed to pick up a point during their time in Switzerland so far, but Wilkinson was keen to impress just how remarkable an achievement it was for the side to even be at the tournament in the first place. But though she wants to accentuate the positives, the Wales manager was also far from rolling over for England as her side look to make an impact in their remaining game. 'I don't think many people inside women's football understand that we're here for the first time and we're here to make an impact,' said Wilkinson. 'Part of that is celebrating our firsts so we were able to celebrate Jess [Fishlock]'s goal twice thanks to VAR. All these moments are important to celebrate. 'Those countries that are fortunate enough to have the player pool to expect regularly to qualify for these events have forgotten what an achievement it is to be at the pinnacle of the game at these major events. 'These women have fought so hard for so long to have this opportunity and I will not allow us to feel like we're just here to participate, so we will continue to celebrate.' Wales fell to a 3-0 defeat in their opening Euro 2025 match against the Netherlands but grew into the tournament to get off to a strong start against a rotated France side. While France took an early lead, Fishlock's 13th-minute equaliser not only represented Wales' first-ever major tournament goal but also put them back on level terms with a side expected to go far at the Euros. Wilkinson's side could not hold out as they fell to 4-1 loss, but she hopes the side will take a key lesson from both games as they head into a crunch clash with England. '[I want them to play with] freedom and courage. We've talked about it all the time. I love watching this team when they start to find their flow,' she said. 'That's what we want to see another time. Our fan base has been incredible and we're so grateful for it so the very least that we can do is show up and give it everything we've got. 'They're on the journey with us and they understand they're here to celebrate something historic. We hope it's a win.' That win will be made all the more special if it comes over neighbours England. It is a rivalry embedded deep into the two side's footballing history. Though Wilkinson may be Canadian, a fierce contest with those in geographical proximity is something she understands well, though she has been keen not to let the players get ahead of themselves. 'I understand the grudge match with my neighbours [the USA],' she said. 'We're preparing like we do every game. I've not let them talk about this England game until we were finished at the French game. 'But equally, for me, this is another incredible challenge. I can't pretend there's not history there. I have read a book. 'For these women, it's acknowledging it and not letting it get bigger than it needs to be. 'This is going to be a wonderful opportunity for women's football and for two nations, neighbours, to put on a display for our families.'

England edge out Argentina with late try

Jack van Poortvliet's last-gasp try clinched England a 22-17 victory against Argentina in their second Test in San Juan and a 2-0 series win. Replacement scrum-half Van Poortvliet went over in the final minute with the score locked at 17-17 following Guy Pepper's brilliant blind-side break as England followed up last week's 35-12 win in La Plata in style. Each side scored two tries in the first half, with Argentina twice hitting back through centre Lucio Cinti and wing Ignacio Mendy after touchdowns from England pair Seb Atkinson and Freddie Steward. In a fast and furious encounter at the Bicentenary Stadium, Santiago Carreras' first-half penalty had edged Argentina into a 17-14 interval lead, with George Ford's penalty in the second period hauling England level before Van Poortvliet's thrilling late effort. Atkinson gave England a flying start with his first try for his country in his second appearance, sent clear by debutant Luke Northmore's offload after wing Tom Roebuck had brilliantly caught Ford's cross-field kick. Ford, making his 101st England appearance, added the extras and after Carreras' excellent penalty pulled Argentina back to 7-3, the tourists were reduced to 14 men. Ben Curry was sent to the sin-bin for his high tackle on Pablo Matera in the 20th minute and the Pumas soon made their extra man count. Simon Benitez Cruz made a searing break after he had gathered a loose ball and the scrum-half fed Cinti, who raced over for a converted score. But England's response was brilliant. Roebuck was held up in the corner after a sweeping attack and after the visitors had spun the ball the other way, wing Will Muir fed Steward to sprint in for their second try. The pace was unrelenting and Argentina hit back to lead 17-14 at the interval when Steward failed to gather Carreras's bouncing kick by the posts and Mendy pounced to touch down. England were rewarded for territorial advantage early in the second half when Ford's converted penalty drew them level at 17-17. Argentina lost number eight Matera to the sin bin just before the hour for killing the ball at a maul just yards from his try line. Van Poortvliet thought he had made a decisive score when touching down in the corner, but Steward had fumbled the ball forward in the build-up. Two tiring teams continued their ferocious battle, almost entirely in Argentina's half, as the game headed into the final 10 minutes with the home side's brave defending keeping the tourists at bay. But heading into the final minute, replacement flanker Pepper stole clear from a maul and after charging down the blind side he turned inside to send the supporting Van Poortvliet over for the decisive score.

Former England striker Andy Carroll signs for Dagenham & Redbridge

Andy Carroll will play sixth-tier football next season after signing for National League South side Dagenham & Redbridge on a free transfer. The former Newcastle, West Ham and Liverpool striker, 36, who became a free agent after leaving Bordeaux this summer, has reportedly taken a minority stake in the club as part of a Qatari-led takeover, and will be managed by the former Manchester City striker Lee Bradbury. Carroll, who won nine England caps, told the Sun: 'I really enjoyed my time in Bordeaux but it's time for me to get settled with my family. I was getting offers from clubs in France, Italy and Spain, but I wanted to come home. It's not every day... ⚔️ 'I could sign for a top club, but me and the managers might not see eye to eye, so I just want to be somewhere I'm going to be happy. It's never been about the money for me, I could have signed for a lot more money. I just love playing football.' The signing coincided with Dagenham announcing a takeover by a consortium of private investors from Qatar, subject to approval by the FA and the National League. Youseph Al Sharif, representing the group, told the club's website: 'I've followed English football closely for years, and I know what clubs like Dagenham represent to their communities. We're stepping into something that matters to people's lives, and we don't take that lightly.
