Ally McCoist ditches Rangers to watch SPFL clash with Celtic legend as old rivals spotted together
Click to share on X/Twitter (Opens in new window) Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window) ALLY McCOIST was nowhere to be seen at Fir Park as Rangers took on Motherwell in their Premiership opener. The Rangers legend was instead taking in another SPFL clash just over 10 miles away - with a Celtic icon by his side. Sign up for Scottish Sun newsletter Sign up 2 It was a disappointing night for McCoist's old team Rangers Credit: Willie Vass 2 But he was at another game with a Celtic legend McCoist, 62, was spotted at K-Park in East Kilbride as his home town club kicked off their League Two campaign against Spartans. It was a historic game for Kilby as they had never played in the SPFL pyramid before this season. But manager Mick Kennedy and assistant Si Ferry would have hoped for a better start in the fourth-tier as they crashed to a 3-1 defeat to the Edinburgh side. Goals from Cameron Russell and a Mark Stowe brace sealed the three points for the visitors to cancel out Kier Foster's equaliser early in the first half. And Spartans managed to see out the win despite being reduced to 10 men in the dying stages when Russell was shown red. McCoist was spotted at the side of the pitch watching on with an old friend and rival - Celtic legend Paul McStay. The maestro was born in Hamilton - not far from East Kibride - but is currently living over in Australia. However, he's back in Scotland this week to make a very rare appearance at his old shooting ground at Celtic Park. The club legend will do the honours of unfurling the league championship flag before Sunday's Premiership kick-off against St Mirren. McStay won three league titles, four Scottish Cups and one League Cup as a Celtic player. Moment Ally McCoist interrupts live radio to congratulate his 'wee pal' on signing for Rangers He's widely regarded as one of the Hoops' greatest ever players. Capped 76 times by Scotland, he played alongside McCoist for the national team for over a decade between the 80s and 90s. On McStay's return, Celtic boss Brendan Rodgers said: "Paul was a great player. He always gave you hope watching Celtic. "You always felt that, in those tough times when Celtic maybe suffered a bit, he could produce that moment of magic. "He was a brilliant player, a really humble guy and I have been fortunate enough to have met him. "That was a real privilege and a real honour for me. "He will get an incredible reception, and it will be amazing to see him again." Have YOU got a point for Kris Boyd? Cyriel Dessers singled out in Rangers transfer admission
Martin cited a "mentality problem" at Rangers as he demanded players drop their ego following the second-half collapse in Lanarkshire. 🗣️ 'When you just jog around, there's a big problem' 🗣️ 'Some of them have to drop their egos' 🗣️ Dessers 'only one we've had a bid for' & he works so hard A 𝐦𝐮𝐬𝐭 𝐰𝐚𝐭𝐜𝐡 interview as Russell Martin cites a 'mentality problem' at Rangers after their 1-1 draw ⬇️ — Sky Sports Scotland (@ScotlandSky) August 2, 2025 However, the Ibrox boss did have positive comments to make on Dessers as he credited the forward for his efforts, revealing he is the only player to have been subject to a transfer bid this summer. Despite interest in the striker, Martin hailed his dedication and effort to compete for the club as he urged members of the dressing room to follow his example. "I said to some of the guys in there, Cyriel is the only one we have actually had a bid for and interest in," Martin said on Sky Sports. "And he comes on and he runs so hard, on Wednesday night and today. "Some of them need to have a look at him and set that example. Read more: He continued: "There will be people left behind. If they don't want to come, they will be left behind because they need to understand what playing for this football club will take and what it means and not just when it is having a nice time. "The European games speak for themselves; they find a way to get up for it. Hopefully, it is down to a bit of information as well, and then today the lethargy and all that stuff is not acceptable. "I am surprised, but I am more angry than surprised."

Russell Martin's brutally honest Rangers reaction in full
Rangers had been ahead at Fir Park at the interval through a James Tavernier header. But Motherwell dominated the second half with Emmanuel Longelo netting a late leveller. Martin pulled no punches in his post-match interview on Sky Sports as he called out some of his players who wanted to "jog around and do what you want to do." 🗣️ 'When you just jog around, there's a big problem' 🗣️ 'Some of them have to drop their egos' 🗣️ Dessers 'only one we've had a bid for' & he works so hard A 𝐦𝐮𝐬𝐭 𝐰𝐚𝐭𝐜𝐡 interview as Russell Martin cites a 'mentality problem' at Rangers after their 1-1 draw ⬇️ — Sky Sports Scotland (@ScotlandSky) August 2, 2025 "We were lucky to get a point," he said, delivering his verdict on the result and performance. "Motherwell played great, we were nowhere near where we need to be and I'm extremely disappointed and hurt by that. "They were braver than us, they were more aggressive than us. "I have said to the players and been really honest with them and I'll be honest with you guys because it is what the supporters of this club deserve... "There is a default at this football club and it is not one person's fault at all, the default is to revert to type when it is going really well everyone is all in, it is really good. "When it is not going well you protect yourself a little bit and self-preservation stuff. "You can't play for this club and enjoy the really good moments and then when it gets tough, 'Oh I'm not sure'. "You have to be all in all the time. We had too many on the pitch today that wanted to do what they wanted to do. "If you are playing with real intensity and courage in the position that we coach you in, no problem. When you just want to jog around and do what you want to do, there's a big problem. "Some of them have to drop their ego. "I will look at us tactically and accept my responsibility in it but today is not really tactical, it's a mentality problem. "We got more than what we deserved, actually." Quizzed on how to fix the mentality matter, he added: "Well, we work out who really wants to be all in and who doesn't. Lyall Cameron comes in, did great because he listens and wants to run really hard for the team. "And I said to some of the guys in there, Cyriel is the only one we have actually had a bid for and interest in. And he comes on and he runs so hard, on Wednesday night and today. "Some of them need to have a look at him and set that example. "I am surprised but I am more angry than surprised." Read more: He continued: "There is no excuse. I know what we are coming into and I understand the fan frustration. "We are only one game in and it is a work in progress but we need to work out quickly who really wants to listen, who will really fihgt, who will really run when the going gets tough. "But Europe is not an excuse, this club demands to play in Europe. We have qualified for that so we are going to be playing in Europe a lot and we are going to have games after European games a lot and we have to manage them much better than today." Touching on the possibility of the result leading to accelerated transfer business, he said: "We need some help for sure, I don't think that has changed also we need to maximise what we have in the building. "We haven't had a huge amount of games, some of them played thier first 90 minutes on Wednesday but we have to work out quickly who really wants to play proeprly in the way that we want to."
