David Montgomery: Everyone's tired of being close, we need to finish
They went into that year with playoff hopes and ended it by blowing a lead in the second half of the NFC Championship Game. Making it that far left some predicting a Super Bowl title last season, but a 15-win regular season went up in smoke when they lost 45-31 to the Commanders in their first playoff outing.
Running back David Montgomery said that the Lions now face the need to prove they can get over the hump that separates contenders from champions.
'Everybody's tired of being close,' Montgomery said, via Eric Woodyard of ESPN.com. 'It's cool to be close at first, but you don't want to get comfortable with being close all the time. That's not what you want to be known for, especially when you know you've got the guys, you've got on this team. You want to finish it, so this is the year for us. The year of the reckoning and the year that we choose that we need to finish.'
The Lions aren't the only team in the kind of situation that Montgomery describes as training camps get underway. The Bills and Ravens have also been knocking on the door without getting through it in recent seasons and their bids to change that will join Detroit's as leading storylines for the 2025 season.

Commanders' underdog rookie looking to go from zero-star recruit to NFL starter
Don't be surprised if rookie running back Jacory Croskey-Merritt ends the 2025 season as one of the Washington Commanders' most popular players. Not only does "Bill" have a unique background, but he's also an underdog who has worked for everything. He won't let being a seventh-round pick in the NFL draft prevent him from making it in the NFL. Besides a unique nickname, more on that in a second, Croskey-Merritt is an outstanding talent. Here's what Washington coach Dan Quinn said about Croskey-Merritt recently. "I think it's the violence of the cuts that he can get his shoulders square and get downhill fast," Quinn said. "So, I'm very excited to see once we get into some opportunities, does he get tackled? Does he not? Does he run through some? But he's off to a really good start.' Croskey-Merritt was a zero-star recruit coming out of Sidney Lanier High School in Montgomery, Alabama. He had no FBS offers, so he signed with FCS Alabama State. After a successful career at Alabama State, Croskey-Merritt wanted to play at a higher level, hoping to catch the eyes of the NFL. He transferred to New Mexico, rushed for 1,190 yards and 17 touchdowns. He still had one year of eligibility remaining and Arizona came calling. Croskey-Merritt transferred to the Wildcats and was poised for a big year. That's where the NCAA got in the way. After only game with Arizona, a game where Croskey-Merritt rushed for 106 yards and a touchdown, the NCAA ruled him ineligible. The NCAA had determined that Croskey-Merritt played more games than allowed during a redshirt year. Just like that, his college career was over. He wouldn't have the opportunity to show NFC scouts that he could dominate at the Power Four level. Instead of quitting the team and training, Croskey-Merritt stayed with the team and supported them every week. After a recent training camp practice, Croskey-Merritt explained his motivation to Scott Abraham of ABC 7 in Washington. "That motivation comes from me just knowing what I have in myself," the rookie said. "Just knowing I was good enough to be with those guys, but I never looked at anyone else's race. I just kinda ran my own race. Just stayed down and kept working." So, why does everyone call him Bill? "I got the nickname Bill from having a bald head when I was little," Croskey-Merritt said in this YouTube video from the University of Arizona. "I used to have a low haircut, so people joked on me and said I looked like the character Little Bill. So it just stuck with me." Washington has two running backs guaranteed to make the 53-man roster: Brian Robinson Jr. and Austin Ekeler. Croskey-Merritt will battle Jeremy McNichols and Chris Rodriguez Jr. for either one or two spots, depending on how many running backs the Commanders keep. You have to like Croskey-Merritt's chances. Washington GM Adam Peters and assistant GM Lance Newmark, as well as some of the coaches, including Quinn, all light up when discussing "Bill." 'If the Bills could move Samuel's $6.9 million in guaranteed base salary, along with a Day 3 pick for someone like McLaurin, I could see them talking themselves into it. Samuel, at least, could give the Commanders a player they could start in the interim.' Samuel spent three seasons with the Commanders before leaving the franchise after the 2023 season to sign with the Bills. Moreover, putting the soon to be 29 year old as part of the trade, it could allow Buffalo to have the cap space to extend McLaurin. Reports: Eagles acquire CB Jakorian Bennett from Raiders
The Super Bowl champion Philadelphia Eagles added depth to a solid secondary, acquiring cornerback Jakorian Bennett in a trade with the Las Vegas Raiders, multiple media outlets reported Monday night. The Raiders reportedly received reserve defensive tackle Thomas Booker IV in the swap. Bennett, 24, appeared in 10 games for Las Vegas last season, making seven stops. He finished with 26 tackles and eight passes defensed. A fourth-round draft pick in 2023 out of Maryland, Bennett played in 14 games and started four times as a rookie. In his two seasons overall, he has 58 tackles and 11 passes defensed. Booker, 25, appeared in every regular-season game for Philadelphia last year, starting once. However, he was in on only 17 percent of the Eagles' defensive plays and seven percent of the special teams snaps. He had 18 tackles, one sack and one pass defense. The Texans made him a fifth-round pick out of Stanford in 2022. He appeared in 10 games (one start) for Houston that year -- his lone NFL experience before 2024. For the Texans, he recorded 15 tackles, 0.5 sacks and one pass defensed. The Eagles open the preseason on Thursday against the visiting Cincinnati Bengals, then officially start defense of their title against the visiting Dallas Cowboys on Sept. 4.
