Carson Beck: Transferring to Miami was 'one of the better decisions I've made'
After his 2024 season with Georgia prematurely ended due to an ulnar collateral ligament (UCL) injury in the SEC championship game, the former Bulldogs quarterback declared for the NFL draft. But less than two weeks later, he decided to skip the pros and enter the transfer portal.
Despite an inconsistent season, Georgia wanted him back, and Alabama was also ready to nab him.
Instead, Beck opted to play with the Hurricanes, and he's feeling comfortable with the pick.
"This is my future, and I think that this decision is one of the better decisions I've made," Beck said at ACC Kickoff on Tuesday, July 22. "Just trying to develop those relationships and that camaraderie, it's just reinforced my decision in a positive way."
A two-year starter at Georgia, Beck started 27 games for the Bulldogs, throwing for 7,426 yards with 57 total touchdowns and 18 interceptions. Head coach Mario Cristobal said Beck has played in "monster" games and played a high level that drew him to bringing the quarterback in.
"Carson has as good of experience as a quarterback as you can have," Cristobal said.
Beck wasted little time in the transfer portal before deciding to play for Miami. He had a do not contact request and announced his commitment less than 48 hours after hitting the portal. He said the offensive fit is what drew him to Miami, along with offensive coordinator Shannon Dawson and the talent surrounding the team, which has to replace several pieces from the 2024 squad that had the best total offense in the country.
Coincidentally, Beck is replacing Cam Ward, who threw for 4,313 yards last season − second-most in FBS − and was the No. 1 overall pick in the 2025 NFL Draft. Despite the big shoes to fill and given his status in college football, Beck said he doesn't feel much pressure replacing Ward. He mentioned it's somewhat the same role he stepped in at Georgia.
"Obviously his success is undeniable," he said. "The last school I was at, I followed up the two-time national champion, so I didn't really feel any pressure there. It's a game; I've played football my whole life. I've played quarterback since I was seven years old, and it's something that I love to do and I've got a lot of good talent around me and really good coaches in position to not only help me not only achieve my goals, but be really successful."
However, he's given his teammates the same feeling as Ward. Offensive tackle Francis Mauigoa said his new quarterback is "a very special guy, just like Cam Ward last year."
"I feel the same energy with Carson Beck," Mauigoa added.
Carson Beck injury update: Miami QB at 100%
Beck described his spring was "a little slow" as he recovered from injury. But Cristobal confirmed "he's been cleared" and has been participating in all team workouts for several weeks.
The quarterback said he spent much of the spring in a coaching role and helping out the other signal-callers on the roster. But now that he's at 100%, the off-season has been "really good and full of good work."
"Really just looking forward to the opportunity, and again, have the opportunity to go out and play football again. I haven't done it in a while, so looking forward to it," Beck said.

ALLEN PARK, Mich. -- The Detroit Lions had one of the NFL's best offensive lines last season. This year is more of a work in progress. Center Frank Ragnow's retirement and the loss of right guard Kevin Zeitler in free agency have opened up competition for at least two new starters. Graham Glasgow, who started at left guard last season and has experience at center, along with rookie Tate Ratledge are getting reps at center through four days of training camp. And then there's the banged-up veteran Taylor Decker at left tackle. 'It's been great. Tate, I thought, was doing a good job. Graham was in there today and I've been comfortable with Graham for quite some time,'' Lions quarterback Jared Goff said on Thursday. 'Whoever it ends up being I'll be good with.'' After Ratledge saw the bulk of center reps the first three days of camp, Glasgow took the center snaps Thursday. Ratledge played only guard at Georgia except for a few practice snaps at center. So he's adjusting to the NFL game and to playing a new position. 'I think just the speed of everything happening. At guard you have a little bit of a delay being off the ball and then, of course, you get up here and you're going against quicker guys,'' Ratledge said. He has no preference for guard or center. 'I enjoy football, it doesn't matter where I am on the field,'' said Ratledge, a second-round pick who sports a John Wayne tattoo on his left bicep. Coach Dan Campbell said earlier in the week that he will keep his eye on the offensive line. '(Ratledge is) getting it all at once. It's everything, it is. It's the mental and it's the technique of it. So, yeah, look we're putting a lot on him,'' Campbell said. 'He's drinking out of a fire hose right now. But there are things that we saw with him in college at Georgia that we felt like, 'You know what? We think this guy can play center.'' Decker remains sidelined while recovering from offseason shoulder surgery, but is expected to join the team after the Hall of Fame game on July 31. He's been on the sidelines at camp daily. 'The standard is the standard. We're expected to be one of the top offensive lines in the league,'' Decker said. 'You lose big pieces, but we've put those expectations on ourselves and put ourselves in a position where we're expected to perform a certain way and it doesn't matter.'' Pro Bowl right tackle Penei Sewell is healthy and practicing daily. Christian Mahogany has been a sort of utility lineman for the Lions the past couple of years. He played in seven games in 2024 and started two, including a playoff game. Kayode Awosika, who started 11 games at guard in 2024, will also contend for a starting guard spot. NOTES: Lions LB Alex Anzalone, who has not participated in camp, was on the sidelines again Thursday in street clothes. He told reporters earlier in the week that he is disappointed the Lions have not signed him to a contract extension. INJURIES: LB Derrick Barnes (hand) and CB Terrion Arnold (leg) left practice early to be evaluated further for their injuries. … CB Ennis Rakestraw (chest) was working on the sidelines but has not practiced since he was injured on Sunday. Back to Belichick basics at ACC Kickoff for UNC's famed Super Bowl-winning coach
There were no fewer than a dozen cameras positioned just outside the men's restroom on the third floor of the Hilton Charlotte Uptown on Thursday afternoon. A similar scene played out near a closed conference room door. Even more lined the hotel breezeway, waiting for a 73-year-old rookie college coach to come out and meet the press. Everywhere Bill Belichick went on Thursday, a cascade of cameras and iPhones followed, eventually leading into a jam-packed ballroom for his first big ACC Kickoff press conference. After taking the stage, the University of North Carolina Tar Heels head football coach shielded his eyes, surveyed the crowd and chuckled. 'Appreciate everybody coming out today. It's really exciting for me to be here,' Belichick said. This is what happens when you hire one of, if not the, greatest coaches in the history of football, who can't seem to stop going viral for his off-the-field personal relationship. 'It's just a different vibe this year and we all know why,' Jeff Taylor, the sports director at WCCB in Charlotte, mused. 'Bill Belichick in the house. Hall of Fame coach, plus all the other stuff that's gone down in his short reign at UNC. There is just an energy here that has not been here in the past.' Reporters who had been at the host hotel all week noted the difference in media scrum sizes and security at the hotel, which has hosted media events for coaches and players for each of the 17 ACC football teams. Belichick's Carolina blue buzz is real – at least right now. His immediate impact on the program is far greater than just the media swarm within the building. UNC announced this week it had sold out all of its season tickets and single-game tickets for the upcoming football season. The big question now, for journalists and Tar Heel fans, is whether he will be able to transform the product on the field for the Tar Heels? Belichick, a splashy December hire by a university known for its basketball program, took dozens of questions from members of the press. And, for the first time in months, it was all about football. Belichick, who was famously short with the press during his NFL days, gave lengthy answers to the press on recruiting, the transfer portal and roster changes. He acknowledged challenges, like having a roster full of talent who haven't played a single game together. Belichick said Thursday he has 70 players who were not part of the 2024 team. 'Right now, the big thing for us is just stacking good training days one on top of another, one at a time, and being ready to go, not only for the opener but for the entire regular season and the ACC schedule,' Belichick said. The man with eight Super Bowl rings, six as the head coach of the New England Patriots and two as an assistant with the New York Giants, told reporters he's working to introduce NFL schemes and concepts to college players without overwhelming them. He peppered his answers with star-studded name drops like Tom Brady, Julian Edelman, and Rob Gronkowski, noting that he is 'fundamentally' trying to cultivate the same culture in Chapel Hill that he did in New England. Senior defensive back Will Hardy told reporters that his coach has 'brought former players to talk to us just about what else there is outside of just football.' The 'Chapel Bill' era at UNC got off to a bit of a dramatic start in the offseason. Conspicuously missing from the interview room on Thursday was the second most famous Jordon in Chapel Hill these days. CNN did not see Belichick's girlfriend, 24-year-old Jordon Hudson, in attendance at his press availabilities. The off-field attention the couple drew hit a fever pitch following an awkward moment during a Belichick interview on 'CBS Sunday Morning,' which aired in April. The interview featured a now-viral moment where Hudson quickly interrupted after the head coach was asked by reporter Tony Dokoupil how the couple had first met. Afterward, Belichick defended Hudson, saying that she was 'not deflecting any specific question or topic but simply doing her job to ensure the interview stayed on track.' Belichick later explained on Good Morning America that his seemingly omnipresent girlfriend handled 'the business things that don't relate to North Carolina that come up in my life, so I can concentrate on football.' In May, the University of North Carolina denied that Hudson was prohibited from the team's football facility after reports suggested she'd been banned. UNC will open the season at home on a Monday night in front of a national broadcast audience. The Tar Heels face the TCU Horned Frogs on September 1.
