Honda bets big on hybrids with new ‘world-beating' tech

Auto Express05-06-2025

Honda has announced plans to launch no fewer than 13 next-generation hybrid cars by the end of the decade. All will feature what the brand claims will be the 'world's most efficient powertrain' and all will arrive within a four-year timeframe starting in 2027.
Honda is still moving forwards with its radical new '0 Series' electric cars, the first of which is due to launch next year, however the recent slowdown in EV sales has caused the brand to reassess some of its predictions. For instance, it no longer believes 30 per cent of its global sales will be from EVs by 2030, as previously thought, leading to some reevaluating of its EV strategy and product plan.
But while 'the expansion of the EV market has fallen behind the initial projection', as Honda CEO Toshihiro Mibe put it when announcing the brand's new roadmap, 'demand for hybrid-electric vehicles (HEVs) is growing. Advertisement - Article continues below
'We are forecasting that the demand for HEVs will continue to grow toward 2030, as they contribute to the reduction of CO2 emissions, without the issue of needing charging infrastructure.' These new hybrid models will 'play a key role during the transition period' before EVs become a lot more popular.
Honda's next-generation e:HEV hybrid powertrain will be an evolution of its two-motor system, which it introduced back in 2014. This sees a petrol engine work together with two electric motors, one used to drive the wheels and another to generate energy for the car's battery. The combustion engine can drive the wheels, mainly on the motorway to maximise efficiency. Skip advert Advertisement - Article continues below
Honda plans to make various upgrades to its system, such as expanding the proportion of the rev range where the engine operates most efficiently. The new and improved hybrid setup will be combined with a new, lighter platform and a newly-developed electric AWD drive unit.
Put all this together, and Honda says it will be able to improve fuel economy by more than 10% compared to current models. For context, the latest hybrid-powered Honda Civic can officially return up to 56.5mpg, and we managed to average 50.3mpg during our own testing. Honda is also aiming to reduce the cost of its next-generation hybrid powertrains by more than 30%.
To demonstrate the renewed importance of hybrids within the company, the new 'H mark' badge that was originally only going to be worn by members of the '0 Series' EV line-up, will now also feature on Honda's most important hybrid models, starting in 2027.
Understandably, technical details are thin on the ground at the moment, and so is any information about these 13 new hybrid models. However, we expect that successors to the Jazz supermini and Civic hatchback will be among them, considering the outgoing versions are a few years old now.

China's humanoid robots generate more soccer excitement than their human counterparts

While China 's men's soccer team hasn't generated much excitement in recent years, humanoid robot teams have won over fans in Beijing based more on the AI technology involved than any athletic prowess shown. Four teams of humanoid robots faced off in fully autonomous 3-on-3 soccer matches powered entirely by artificial intelligence on Saturday night in China's capital in what was touted as a first in China and a preview for the upcoming World Humanoid Robot Games, set to take place in Beijing. According to the organizers, a key aspect of the match was that all the participating robots operated fully autonomously using AI-driven strategies without any human intervention or supervision. Equipped with advanced visual sensors, the robots were able to identify the ball and navigate the field with agility They were also designed to stand up on their own after falling. However, during the match several still had to be carried off the field on stretchers by staff, adding to the realism of the experience. China is stepping up efforts to develop AI-powered humanoid robots, using sports competitions like marathons, boxing, and football as a real-world proving ground. Cheng Hao, founder and CEO of Booster Robotics, the company that supplied the robot players, said sports competitions offer the ideal testing ground for humanoid robots, helping to accelerate the development of both algorithms and integrated hardware-software systems. He also emphasized safety as a core concern in the application of humanoid robots. 'In the future, we may arrange for robots to play football with humans. That means we must ensure the robots are completely safe,' Cheng said. 'For example, a robot and a human could play a match where winning doesn't matter, but real offensive and defensive interactions take place. That would help audiences build trust and understand that robots are safe.' Booster Robotics provided the hardware for all four university teams, while each school's research team developed and embedded their own algorithms for perception, decision-making, player formations, and passing strategies—including variables such as speed, force, and direction, according to Cheng. In the final match, Tsinghua University's THU Robotics defeated the China Agricultural University's Mountain Sea team with a score of 5–3 to win the championship. Mr. Wu, a supporter of Tsinghua, celebrated their victory while also praising the competition. 'They (THU) did really well,' he said. 'But the Mountain Sea team (of Agricultural University) was also impressive. They brought a lot of surprises.' China's men have made only one World Cup appearance and have already been knocked out of next years' competition in Canada, Mexico and the United States.

Five Crazy Features of the Concept AMG GT XX We Hope Make It To Production

A plethora of techy features Sure, a 1,341-horsepower super sedan from one of the most storied brands on Earth is exciting, but there's more to the cool concept than a slick spec sheet with larger-than-life numbers. Affalterbach says that the Concept AMG GT XX 'offers insight into the first series-production model based on high-performance architecture.' Hopefully, some of the coolest features don't get left on the cutting room floor. Previous Pause Next Unmute 0:00 / 0:09 Full screen 2024 Kia EV6 GT-Line review: Is this the EV that will convert you? Watch More 'World first' Aero wheels Turbofan wheel covers have been around since the 1970s, but Mercedes claims the patented design appearing on the Concept AMG GT XX is a world first. The blades comprising the turbofan cover are repositionable and react to different situations as dictated by the car's control units. Like a traditional turbofan cover, they can sit flush with the wheel to reduce drag; however, when required for enhanced brake cooling, the blades open to increase airflow. The actuators adjusting the fans are attached to each wheel, fully autonomous, and use the wheel itself as a power source. Benz says the battery on each is good to store enough energy for 200 blade movements. Mercedes-AMG CONCEPT AMG GT XX — Source: Mercedes-Benz Taillights and light bar Around back, the Concept AMG GT XX continues to put on a masterclass in techno wizardry. The light panel comprises more than 700 individual LEDs and can even display vehicle status info like charging progress. Even the taillights themselves, which are fairly straightforward circular lights in groupings of three, are something we hope to see more of. The panel housing the lights is actually slightly recessed, giving the lights an extra sense of depth. The deceptively simple lights are a nice slice of retro-futurism — and good design — that we would love to see MB include in their upcoming cars. Mercedes-AMG CONCEPT AMG GT XX — Source: Mercedes-Benz Carbon fiber bucket seats What radical concept car is complete without a set of uber-aggressive carbon fiber-backed bucket seats? The Concept AMG GT XX isn't the first, nor will it be the last, but we're still suckers for an excellent pair of thrones. The front two buckets are based on race seats and feature swappable seat pads, similar to driver changes in endurance racing. The seat pads are also 3D printed, which makes us think there's actually a possibility of production in their future. Perhaps cooler — and less production-ready — are the rear bucket seats, a feature BMW pioneered in the F90 M5 CS. Benz says they're integrated into the car's rear bulkhead, cushions, and all. So, no hot swapping there. Autoblog Newsletter Autoblog brings you car news; expert reviews and exciting pictures and video. Research and compare vehicles, too. Mercedes-AMG CONCEPT AMG GT XX — Source: Mercedes-Benz Unique flooring The Concept AMG GT XX, notably, has no headliner, leaving the carbon fiber roof exposed for all to see. You don't have to look up to be amazed; you can also look down at the floor. You'll notice a racing-inspired checkered flag design that's made of 100 percent recycled materials. I'm a big fan of working in checkered flag designs where you least expect it — like BMW and its F87 M2 CS's carbon fiber roof — and I'm really hoping Mercedes-Benz pursues this line of design. Name another car with a checkered flag design on the floor. I'll wait. Mercedes-AMG CONCEPT AMG GT XX — Source: Mercedes-Benz Luminescent paint The bright orange paint on the Concept AMG GT XX is eye-catching, but even more interestingly, it's luminescent, essentially translating to glow-in-the-dark. The paint emits light in response to an electrical current, allowing it to glow bright even when the lights go out. MB dubs it 'MBUX Fluid Light Paint,' and you may have already seen it in action, since the manufacturer used the same paint on a GT3 race car at the 24 Hours of Nürburgring. Mercedes isn't the only one working on this, so we expect to see this kind of paint becoming more mainstream over the next decade or so. Final thoughts The Concept AMG GT XX is one of the more compelling Mercedes concepts to debut in the last few years. Not because of its horsepower figures or striking overall design, but because it seems to offer a genuine glimpse into the automaker's future. If it is, we expect some really good-looking cars to roll out of Affalterbach sooner rather than later. While some features, like the aero wheels, are bound to be reserved for high-dollar cars, there are somewhat more reasonable goals for things like luminescent paint and recycled flooring. We'll have to wait and see. About the Author Steven Paul View Profile

Popular brand to recall nearly 200,000 vehicles over 'trapped' fears

A popular car manufacturer is urging drivers to take their vehicle to back to the dealership to fix an issue that could otherwise result in passengers getting 'trapped' inside the car Thousands of passengers risk being 'trapped' in their car due to a common fault, experts have warned. Some of the world's most popular car brands including Honda, Ford, and Mercedes recently announced the recall of hundreds of thousands of vehicles due to a range of serious safety concerns. All of the recalls have been issued in the United States, collectively affecting more than 850,000 vehicles in total, with a variety of mechanical and electronic issues identified that increase the likelihood of crashes and other hazardous situations — but only if they remain on the road without being repaired. ‌ It is always of the utmost importance to address potential safety defects in vehicles promptly to protect not just yourself, but everyone on the road. If you're concerned your car may be impacted, it's best to contact your local dealership. ‌ Honda The American Honda Motor Company is recalling around 260,000 vehicles in the States due to concerns that a brake pedal could shift out of position, which would prevent the driver from being able to apply the brakes. If this were to happen, the vehicles would fail to comply with Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards related to lighting and brake systems. The recall affects certain Acura TLX (2021-2025), Acura MDX (2023-2025) and Honda Pilot (2023-2025) models. Honda plans to notify owners by mail around July 28, 2025, with instructions on how to have their vehicles inspected and repaired as needed. Mercedes-Benz Mercedes-Benz has also issued a significant recall, affecting almost 92,000 vehicles. The issue centres on the C-pillar, which may not absorb enough impact in the event of a crash. In the event of an accident, the rear occupant's head could come into contact with the C-pillar, potentially causing catastrophic harm. The recall covers certain 2023-2025 GLC 300, GLC 300 4MATIC, 2024-2025 AMG GLC 43 4MATIC, 2025 GLC 350E 4MATIC and AMG GLC 63 S E vehicles equipped with a panoramic sunroof. Mercedes-Benz has instructed dealers to modify the roof lining of affected vehicles to address the problem. ‌ Ford Ford has registered documents with the United States National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) indicating that over 500,000 of its vehicles are being recalled for various issues. The largest of these recalls involves certain Aviator and Explorer models manufactured between 2020 and 2025, with 304,662 units affected. The main concern is that the second-row seats in these vehicles could move unexpectedly, which may prevent them from properly restraining occupants during a crash. This could significantly increase the risk of injury. Ford dealers will inspect the second-row seat switch and, if necessary, replace the bezel around the switch. ‌ Another major issue for Ford involves nearly 200,000 Mustang Mach E vehicles produced between 2021 and 2025. If these vehicles have a low battery charge, the electronic door latches may remain locked after the driver or front passenger exits and shuts the door. This could result in a situation where a person in the back seat is unable to use the inside door release handles to exit the vehicle. The NHTSA warned that this defect could 'possibly trap someone who is unable to use the inside door release handles, such as a child in the back seat'. Ford has therefore advised owners to bring their vehicles to dealerships, where the necessary software updates will be provided free of charge. Notification letters were scheduled to be sent to owners by June 23, 2025, with a follow-up letter planned when the fix becomes available, which is expected by September 29. Although Ford has not received any reports of accidents or injuries related to this problem, the company has provided guidance for drivers to recognise warning signs. These include a 'system off to save power' alert or a blank SYNC screen after turning off the vehicle. In these cases, drivers may need to pull the inside release handles more forcefully than usual to exit through the front door. These recalls highlight ongoing safety concerns in the automotive industry and the importance of prompt action by manufacturers to address potential risks to drivers and passengers. All repairs related to these recalls will be carried out free of charge.
