Lucy Olsen shines in Washington Mystics win vs Las Vegas Aces

USA Todaya day ago

With the Washington Mystics missing leading scorer guard Brittney Sykes and Jade Melbourne on Thursday night vs. the Las Vegas Aces, former Iowa women's basketball guard Lucy Olsen showcased her efficient skillset in her first high-volume minutes game of her career in the team's 94-83 win from Las Vegas, Nev.
Starting her WNBA career primarily coming off the bench, Olsen was thrust into action against the Aces when starting guard Jade Melbourne left the game following a facial injury early in the first quarter.
In her first high-volume usage of her career, the former Hawkeye was able to score 14 points on 5-for-12 from the field, 3-for-7 from 3-point territory, and a perfect 1-for-1 from the free-throw line. Along with her scoring, she also collected four rebounds, three assists, and one steal in 38 minutes of action.
It is still unknown whether Olsen will continue to garner similar minutes as the Mystics monitor the recovery statuses of their injured players, her impressive showing against the Aces should be enough to at least get some favorable consideration from the coaching staff.
Whatever her minutes may be moving forward, Olsen's performance drew high praise across the Iowa women's basketball community.
The next opportunity for Olsen to play will be when Washington travels to Arlington, TX, for their 7 p.m. CT matchup against the Dallas Wings from College Park Center on Saturday.

Social media reacts to Alabama players signing undrafted NBA free agent deals

Over the course of this past Wednesday and Thursday night, the Alabama Crimson Tide did not see any of their four draft-eligible players selected in the two rounds of the 2025 NBA draft. Yes, throughout both the first-and-second rounds, none of Alabama's four draft-eligible prospects - Mark Sears, Grant Nelson, Clifford Omoruyi, and Chris Youngblood - heard their names called, and instead entered undrafted free agency late Friday night. Since, it has not taken those four Alabama players long to find a new home at the professional level either, as all have signed an undrafted free agent deal as of Friday, June 27. Let's take a look at some reactions on social media to Alabama's draft prospects landing with NBA teams on free agent deals. Former UNC wide receiver praises Bill Belichick for his coaching style

This former UNC football player had some nice things to say about Chapel Bill. 2024 was another lost football season for the North Carolina Tar Heels, whom – despite clinching their sixth-consecutive trip to a bowl game – finished with their second losing record in four seasons. If you thought last year was bad for UNC, take a look at Florida State. The Seminoles started 2024 ranked, as they typically are, then proceeded to win just two games. North Carolina reloaded its roster this offseason under new head coach Bill Belichick, who brings eight Super Bowls and countless experience to Chapel Hill. The Tar Heels' greatest replacements come on defense, though, replacing their entire starting defensive line with the likes of Pryce Yates and Vilbert Smith. Gavin Blackwell, who played his first four collegiate seasons at UNC, had an opportunity to learn from Belichick for a few months. Now on FSU, Blackwell praised his former head coach, despite never suiting up for him. "He was great," Blackwell said. "Honestly, I have nothing bad to say about Coach (Bill) Belichick. He loves football. Everything you see online and stuff like that, I would kind of say the media portrays it a little bit differently than what it is inside the building. He loves his players, he loves his coaches and he's all about ball. He kind of brought more of an NFL aspect to college and that's kind of what they're running there. But himself, he's down-to-earth dude, not a big-headed guy. You can go up to him, have a conversation, talk ball with him. He loves that type of stuff and when you show that you're interested, he's gonna make sure he gives you that same respect and try to help you as much as he can. He's got eight Super Bowls. Great dude, wish them the best." Blackwell redshirted his first collegiate season in 2021, appearing in just one game, but emerged the following year with 239 receiving yards and his lone touchdown. Now on a Mike Norvell-led roster desperately searching for productive talent, Blackwell has a real chance to put up WR1 numbers. Sky Coach Tyler Marsh Has Strong Opinion About Valkyries Coach

Sky Coach Tyler Marsh Has Strong Opinion About Valkyries Coach originally appeared on Athlon Sports. Tyler Marsh is in his first season as head coach of the Chicago Sky. On Friday night, he'll go head-to-head with Golden State Valkyries head coach Natalie Nakase, also in her first season leading a WNBA team, when the two squads meet at the Chase Center. Advertisement Before tip-off, Marsh spoke to the media and had high praise for his former colleague. The two previously coached together with the Las Vegas Aces and built a strong bond during their championship run. Kenzo Fukuda, who covers the Valkyries and Warriors, shared a few highlights from Marsh's comments: "Chicago Sky HC Tyler Marsh joked about Natalie Nakase and their close relationship coaching in the Aces together." Marsh opened up about their past in Las Vegas, where they won back-to-back titles in 2022 and 2023: 'Natalie's extremely competitive, so we haven't had a whole lot of communication since the season has started.' Advertisement He also reflected on their close working relationship: "We were extremely close the last three years, working hand-in-hand, side-by-side." Chicago Sky head coach Tyler Lee-Imagn Images Marsh concluded with heartfelt praise for Nakase: "Obviously, being able to go through what we were able to experience together in Vegas helped bring us closer together. Who she is as a person, who she is as a coach—I think the world of her." Marsh served on the Aces staff from 2022 to 2024 and was part of the Toronto Raptors' coaching staff during their 2019 NBA championship season. Nakase's coaching tenure in Vegas overlapped with Marsh's. Prior to coaching, she played for the San Jose Spiders, San Diego Siege and Germany's Herner TC. Her coaching career began in 2008 with the Wolfenbüttel Wildcats. Advertisement Friday's matchup is more than just a game; it's a reunion between two former colleagues turned head coaches, each aiming to make their mark in a new chapter of their WNBA careers.
