Jai Hind Camp residents are living in ‘subhuman' conditions: TMC MPs
The delegation, comprising Rajya Sabha members Sukhendu Sekhar Roy, Sagarika Ghose and Saket Gokhale, said the slum dwellers told them that they have been living without electricity for the last five to six days.
'We found that there are hundreds of families from Cooch Behar that have been living here for the past 20-25 years. The majority of them work as rag-pickers, and they are being asked to move as the private owners of the land want them out. We will send a detailed report to West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee,' said Mr. Roy.
The TMC MP appealed to political parties and social organisations to help the residents of the camp, whom he said were living in 'subhuman conditions'.
'Just because they are Bengali-speaking, they are being targeted by the authorities and subject to inhuman actions. We must find some place for them to live,' he said.
Accusing the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) government of being 'anti-Bengali', Ms. Banerjee, last week, in a post on X, said, 'There are over 1.5 crore migrant workers in Bengal who live with dignity. But the same cannot be said for BJP-ruled States, where Bengalis are being treated as infiltrators in their own country. Speaking Bengali does not make one a Bangladeshi. They are as much citizens of India as anyone else, regardless of what language they speak.'
The police had conducted a verification drive in the area last year, following Lieutenant-Governor V.K. Saxena's orders.

LUCKNOW: Prateek Yadav, step brother of former Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister and Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav and husband of BJP leader Aparna Yadav, has alleged that he was duped to the tune of over Rs 4 crore by a real estate businessman. Prateek, in a complaint lodged at Gautampalli police station in Lucknow, on Sunday, alleged that he was cheated by one Krishnanand Pandey, a resident of Chinhat, who deals in real estate. Prateek named Krishnanand Pandey, his wife Vandana Pandey and father Ashok Pandey in the complaint following which an FIR has been lodged against the three under the relevant sections of BNS pertaining to extortion, cheating and IT Act. Krishnanand had formed a real estate company and allegedly cheated Prateek on the pretext of investing his money in the firm. As per theComplaint, when Prateek asked for his money, Krishnanand threatened him with getting him implicated in a fake POSCO case and making a fake audio viral. Notably, Patek Yadav's wife Aparna Yadav is a BJP leader and is currently holding the position of the Vice- President of state women's commission. Prateek allegedly mentioned in his complaint that Krishnanand Pandey had also demanded Rs 5 crore more from him. The sources claimed that Prateek, the son of SP patriarch late Mulayam Singh Yadav's second wife Sadhna Gupta, told the cops that he came in contact with Krishnanand Pandey in 2012 when the latter had come up with a business proposal of buying prime land along Shaheed Path. Krishnanand and his associate US Bisht then formed a company in 2015 in which both of them were directors.

Maha govt to establish separate cell for waste management: Dy CM
Mumbai: Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde on Monday in the state assembly announced that a separate cell will be set up to resolve the problems faced by the municipal corporations and municipalities in the state in waste management. He was responding to a question raised by BJP legislator Vijay Deshmukh in this regard. Members Abhimanyu Pawar and Arjun Khotkar also raised a sub-question. Shinde said that the work of disposing of the waste collected daily from Solapur city in a scientific manner is being done by Solapur Bioenergy Company Limited. A biogas project with a capacity of 300 tons per day is operating here, and biogas and fertiliser are produced from wet waste, while dry waste is separated and sent to processing industries. 'Proper classification of waste in municipalities and municipal corporations is essential. Instructions have already been given to the Principal Secretary of the Urban Development Department to resolve the problems of small municipalities and municipal corporations in this regard. The state government will provide necessary assistance to all such places. The Principal Secretary of the Urban Development Department will be instructed to verify the resolutions so that the process of taking resolutions in the municipality remains transparent at all times,' he said. Minister of State Madhuri Misal said that in Solapur city, garbage is collected from house to house using bell carts. However, there is a problem that garbage accumulates in some slum areas even after the bell carts are used. Currently, about seven lakh tons of waste have been dumped in Solapur city. Of this, about five lakh tons of waste have been collected. Meanwhile, the Deputy Chief Minister, in his reply to another question by Shiv Sena UBT legislator Bhaskar Jadhav, announced that inquiry will be conducted through the Divisional Commissioner in connection with two different schemes used for water supply works being carried out under the Maharashtra Golden Jayanti Urban Redevelopment Mission in the jurisdiction of Chakan Municipal Council. 'Under the Maharashtra Golden Anniversary Urban Redevelopment Mission, the water supply work under the district level scheme of Chakan Municipal Council was given administrative approval on February 24, 2024 and work order on March 13, 2024. Although an extension has been given till March 31, 2025, the Chakan Municipal Council has proposed to recover the delay penalty for non-completion of the work by the contractor. However, when it was observed that orders had also been given under the state-level scheme at the same place, instructions were given to the concerned on May 13, 2025, to stop the work, and no payment has been made from the state-level scheme,' he said.

Illegal constructions in Mumbai: Maharashtra Speaker Rahul Narwekar asks govt to submit report
Maharashtra Legislative Assembly Speaker Rahul Narwekar Monday directed the state government to submit an action-taken report (ATR) on illegal constructions across various wards of Mumbai before the conclusion of the ongoing Monsoon Session Friday. The directive came in response to a question raised by BJP MLA Parag Alvani, who sought accountability regarding unauthorised construction on a Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) plot in Vile Parle (East). Responding during the Question Hour, Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde assured the House that stern action would be initiated against erring officials, including assistant municipal commissioners, if found shielding illegal constructions. He said instructions would be issued to Municipal Commissioner Bhushan Gagrani to prepare a category-wise list of unauthorised structures in the city and take necessary action. 'The government will not support any illegal construction. If officials are found protecting such structures, strict action will be taken against them,' Shinde said. The Deputy CM further clarified that while several illegal structures in the Vasai-Virar region have already been demolished, some remain due to stay orders from the courts. 'Those too will be removed as soon as the legal restrictions are lifted,' he said. Shinde, however, noted that immediate action at some locations during the monsoon may not be feasible, as residents are currently occupying these structures. 'After monsoon, we will take steps to remove even those constructions,' he added. Referring to the case flagged by Alvani, Shinde informed the House that unauthorised sheds had been erected on BMC-owned plot number 256 in Vile Parle East. The civic body demolished the sheds on March 24, 2025. A subsequent complaint regarding illegal parking on the same plot led to further action, and the encroachments were cleared on June 3, 2025. Several legislators, including Yogesh Sagar, Jitendra Awhad, Dilip Walse Patil, Varun Sardesai, Murji Patel, Ajay Choudhari, and Bala Nandgaonkar, raised supplementary questions over the issue. Minister of State for Urban Development Sandhya Misal informed the House that action against illegal constructions is being taken under the Maharashtra Regional and Town Planning (MRTP) Act. She urged MLAs to report instances from their constituencies, assuring that departmental action would follow and concerned officials would be held accountable.
