
Mitsubishi boss slams federal emissions regulations, "naivety" around EVs
Designed to incentivise manufacturers to reduce CO2 emissions across their vehicle lineups, the NVES commenced on January 1, 2025. If automakers exceed an average carbon emissions target on the vehicles they sell each year, they'll be penalised $100 per g/km of CO2 for every vehicle which exceeds the target.
Speaking at the recent local launch for the updated Mitsubishi Outlander, Mr Westcott addressed the issue of NVES by telling CarExpert he agreed with its fundamental motives.
"It's important that people understand that I personally, and as a company, we are very concerned about sustainability and the environment, and we think that the world should be doing something to reduce emissions," he said.

"That's not just for our industry, it's for everything. We need to be looking at reducing significant emissions to protect our planet for the future."
The NVES sets out to do just that. Put simply, manufacturers are now subject to CO2 limits for new cars, which are 141g/km for passenger cars and 210g/km for light commercial vehicles and heavy-duty SUVs. These limits will reduce every year until 2029, forcing manufacturers to sell increasingly efficient vehicles.
Among the ways to get around this and continue to sell 'dirtier' vehicles is to sell more zero- and low-emission cars like EVs and hybrids, but Mr Westcott doesn't expect government regulations to reverse recent trends in EV demand.
"I think there's a degree of naivety that thinks that if you just penalise us as [manufacturers], all of us, that somehow that's miraculously going to change the market," he said.

"And the reality is, as we sit here today, at last count, and I'm losing count, there are [more than 85] battery EV options available in the Australian market. There is no shortage of choice, and yet battery-electric vehicles are still in [low demand].
"That's not because of penalties or a lack of penalties. We've got plenty of those, but they're not going to change the equation, because there are other pieces in the puzzle that are missing.
"Any solid, rational person will understand that you need to address, and whether it's mathematics or accounting, you've got to balance the equation.
"We, as a [manufacturer], cannot force you or [anyone] to buy an EV, and you can penalise us to death. I still am not going to force you to buy an EV."
Mitsubishi's current focus is firmly on plug-in hybrid vehicles (PHEVs), though it does have plans to launch an EV co-developed with Foxtron in the second half of 2026. Fringe benefits tax (FBT) exemptions for PHEVs recently came to an end though, a move Mr Westcott has previously labelled a mistake.
In the first half of 2025, 25,613 PHEVs were delivered across Australia, a significant increase on the 8223 delivered in the same period last year.
EVs, meanwhile, have notched 47,145 deliveries in the first half of 2025, but that number is down on the 50,905 delivered in the first half of 2024.
"We need to understand the reasons that people aren't buying EVs, and that includes, among other things – there's a few things – but one of them is primarily infrastructure. Where do I charge this car?," Mr Westcott said.
"And if I'm a tradie and I've got five jobs to do, and the current technology doesn't allow me to tow a trailer that weighs 3.5 tonnes full of tools or cement or tiles for eight hours of the day, so I can get to the five jobs that I need to do without spending an hour or two hours charging my car every two hours, then I'm going to make no money, mate. I'm not going to make a living.
"There's a practicality, there's common sense, maybe, but just some practicality that's missing in what's happened with NVES. The ambition is right, but there's a gap between ambition and reality.
"And I don't see anybody that's talking about how we're going to fix those gaps that exist between ambition and reality. Just penalising us is not going to force people to buy cars.
"We can't force people to buy cars. We are a democratic country, and people have free choice."

Banks weigh down ASX, but miners keep head above water
The Australian sharemarket remains in the red at lunchtime with bank stocks among the hardest hit as investors digest the latest developments in Donald Trump's trade wars, despite the US president electing not to increase the 10 per cent base tariff on Australian imports. The ASX200 was 65.5 points, or 0.8 per cent lower, at 8677.3 just after midday, with 9 of 11 sectors in the red, with healthcare and financial stocks the biggest losers. Trump issued an executive order on Thursday night, Washington time, confirming new tariff rates for several trading partners following 'deals' struck with their leaders, as well as revised tariffs for a number of other countries. Australia received the lowest rate, 10 per cent, when the so-called reciprocal tariffs were announced on April 2. Australia was not named among the changes on Friday (AEST), and a White House fact sheet confirmed any countries not on the new list would remain on 10 per cent. Financial stocks slumped, with NAB falling 1.7 per cent, Commonwealth Bank lost 1.5 per cent, Westpac shed 1.3 per cent and ANZ Bank slipped 0.2 per cent in early afternoon trade. Gaming giant Star Entertainment Group was 4.5 per cent lower as it announced a deal to sell its 50 per cent stake in its Queen's Wharf hotel and casino complex had collapsed. Mining stocks are higher. BHP gained 0.9 per cent, Rio Tinto added 0.6 per cent and Fortescue rose 0.4 per cent. Healthcare stocks declined as Trump shook up the industry, after it was revealed the US government sent letters to 17 of the world's largest drugmakers demanding they charge the US what other countries pay for new medicines. Five ways Trump's tariffs will impact you
Australia may have avoided the worst of the US tariffs, but it is still likely to impact every household in a few key ways. Starting August 1, US trading partners faced a wave of fresh levies. US President Donald Trump signed in higher rates for many countries under a new executive order, but so far has left the original baseline tariffs at 10 per cent. Australia does not have an additional 'reciprocal tariff' and only faces the base rate. Australia's tariff rate will remain at the baseline of 10% as US President Donald Trump announced an increase for dozens of economies around the world. AMP chief economist Shane Oliver said while Australia would not be directly impacted, there would be second order impacts. 'It is good news for Australian companies but the threat to global growth remains significant,' Dr Oliver said. 'The average tariff rate is 20 per cent …. well up from the two to three per cent tariff going to the US at the start of the year. 'There is going to be a hit to the US economic growth and global growth as there is a big increase compared to last year.' This slowdown is the biggest threat to the Australian economy. Interest rate In a win for mortgage holders and a loss for savers, the fallout from Trump's tariffs could see interest rates cut further than previously anticipated. Dr Oliver said on the back of slowing economic growth households with a mortgage could benefit from lower rates. 'It won't push prices up in Australia …. if anything, the weaker economic growth environment that might unfold could mean less inflation,' he told NewsWire. 'But there is this perverse thing because of the uncertainty imposed on global growth. 'It could mean lower than otherwise interest rates and households with mortgages will benefit from that.' 'The combination of these factors has kept market volatility low at this point of time,' Mr Sycamore said. 'What could change this situation, is retaliatory tariffs from impacted countries, which in turn could lead to higher tariffs from the US than the ones announced this morning.' Commonwealth Bank sustainable and agricultural economist Dennis Voznesenski previously told NewsWire strong demand out of the US would continue to support new all-time highs. 'The US has largely four sources to import beef from abroad, being Mexico, Canada, Brazil and Australia,' Mr Voznesenski said. 'Mexico has a flesh eating bacteria called new age screw worm with the US closing the border to Mexico … Canada exports to the US are down 25 per cent from last year as they rebuild stock and as of August 1 President Trump plans to put a 50 per cent tariff on Brazil.' The economist said US farmers currently had a multiple-decade low supply of beef, meaning they will need to continue to export from other countries. 'Typically with tariffs the objective is to the onshore industry. With some products you can restart quickly, but with cattle it's just not how it works, ' Mr Voznesenski said. Buying medicines Australians as a whole could be paying more for medicines as the US President took aim at 'foreign freeloading nations.' In a group, which alluded to Australia's pharmaceutical benefit schemes, Mr Trump issued a letter to the bosses of 17 drug firms on Thursday demanding they extend 'most favoured nation' pricing to the US. The price of drugs could increase.
