Jagan slams Midhun Reddy's arrest, says it's ‘political conspiracy'

Time of India3 days ago
Vijayawada: Former chief minister and YSRCP president YS Jagan Mohan Reddy has strongly condemned the arrest of party MP PV Midhun Reddy, calling it "politically motivated and illegal".
He described the arrest as a deliberate attempt by the TDP-led govt to silence public representatives who stand by the people. Midhun Reddy, a three-time Lok Sabha member, has allegedly been falsely implicated through forced confessions.
"This is a targeted act of political vendetta by the
TDP
govt to cover up its own scams and failures. The alleged liquor scam is nothing but a manufactured narrative, created purely for media theatrics and to divert attention from real issues.
The entire case is built on statements extracted under pressure, threats, third-degree torture, and also through bribes and inducements," said Jagan on social media platform-X.
He said that the fact that Naidu himself is on bail with respect to a case on issues pertaining to liquor policy during 2014 - 19 itself, is an irrefutable evidence as to why he is stooping so low. The fact that he wants to nullify his case for acts during 2014-19 and also justify his policy now for 2024- 29, he is finding fault with the policy formulated by the YSRCP govt.

"What is more alarming is that, while falsely accusing YSRCP leaders of a liquor scam, the current TDP-led coalition is reviving the very corrupt liquor practices that the YSRCP govt had dismantled. The belt shops and illegal liquor outlets named permit rooms have returned. While undoing YSRCP government's successful deeds of shutting down thousands of such belt shops and permit rooms and also reducing the liquor outlets significantly, the present govt is now encouraging permit rooms, belt shops, backdoor liquor sales beyond MRP and weakening regulatory enforcement," charged Jagan.
He alleged that corruption and mafia have crept back into the process of awarding wine shop licenses, and thereby placement of orders to the distilleries, undoing the transparent govt shops system they put in place in 2019.
He alleged that Naidu stalled investigations into those serious corruption cases against him and his close associates after coming into power. He said that YSRCP leaders are being arrested not because they are guilty, but because the party remains deeply rooted in the hearts of the people. "This is not a legal process. It is a political witch-hunt aimed at destabilizing a strong opposition," said Jagan.

‘25 times in 73 days': Congress on Trump's repeated India-Pak ceasefire claim; Rahul Gandhi asks ‘Why is he saying it'

Congress MP and Lok Sabha Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi on Wednesday raised eyebrows over former US President Donald Trump's recurring claims of brokering peace between India and Pakistan. Speaking on Trump's repeated remarks, Gandhi asked, 'Why is he saying it so many times?' The comment came after US President Donald Trump once again claimed credit for stopping a potential nuclear conflict between the two South Asian neighbours, India and Pakistan, allegedly using trade threats as leverage. Echoing Rahul Gandhi's concerns, senior Congress leader Jairam Ramesh strongly criticised the Narendra Modi-led government for its silence on Trump's statements and its failure to provide clarity on key national security matters, including the Pahalgam terror attack and Operation Sindoor. Ramesh noted that Trump's claim has now reached a symbolic milestone. 'The claims of a 'ceasefire' made by Trump have reached their silver jubilee with the US President reiterating them 25 times in the last 73 days,' he said. In a post on X, Jairam Ramesh accused the Prime Minister of avoiding critical debate: 'As the Modi government continues in its refusal to give firm dates for a debate on Pahalgam-Sindoor in Parliament and as the Modi government persists in its refusal to commit to a reply by the PM in the debate, President Trump reaches the silver jubilee, the quarter-century mark on his claims. He has trumpeted 25 times in the last 73 days, but the Prime Minister of India is totally quiet – finding time only to travel abroad and to destabilise democratic institutions at home.' Donald Trump's latest claim restated his supposed role in preventing a major war: 'We have stopped wars between India and Pakistan. They were probably going to end up in a nuclear war. They shot down five planes in the last attack. It was back and forth, back and forth. I called them and I said no more trade if you do this. They are both powerful nuclear nations. Who knows where that would have ended up, and I stopped it,' he said. The Opposition has also demanded that PM Modi address Parliament and the nation regarding Operation Sindoor and the Election Commission's Special Intensive Revision (SIR) exercise currently underway in Bihar.

Indians lost Rs 22,845 crore to cyber fraud in 2024, a 206% rise from previous year: Centre

Indians lost Rs 22,845.7 crore due to cyber fraud in 2024, the Union government told Parliament on Tuesday. This was nearly 206% higher than the Rs 7,465.1 crore loss reported in 2023. In a written reply in the Lok Sabha, Minister of State for Home Affairs Bandi Sanjay Kumar said that more than 22.6 lakh cybercrime incidents were registered on the National Cyber Crime Reporting Portal in 2024. The number of such crimes increased by 42% as compared to 2023, when nearly 16 lakh incidents were reported. In 2022, around 10.3 lakh incidents of cybercrime were registered on the portal, said Kumar. Listing the steps taken by the government to tackle cyber crimes, the minister said that the Centre has so far blocked more than 9.4 lakh SIM cards and over 2.6 lakh International Mobile Equipment Identity numbers, or IMEIs, based on police reports. Kumar added that the Indian Cybercrime Coordination Centre, or I4C, launched a suspect registry of identifiers of cyber criminals in September, in collaboration with banks. The I4C monitors cyber crimes at the national level. 'So far, more than 11 lakh suspect identifier data received from banks and 24 lakh Layer 1 mule accounts have been shared with the participating entities of Suspect Registry and saved more than Rs 4,631 crores,' the minister told Lok Sabha. A 'layer 1 mule account' is created either by using stolen personal details – individuals' Aadhaar and PAN card details – or by luring people with money into lending or renting their bank accounts for the operation. In October, the Union home ministry said that investigation agencies in India were identifying 4,000 mule accounts every day that are used to receive and transfer funds illegally on behalf of others. The ministry said in March that Indians had lost Rs 2,576 crore to 'digital arrest scams and related cybercrimes' between 2022 and February 2025. In cases of 'digital arrest', criminals usually orchestrate the fraud by posing as law enforcement officers, often wearing uniforms and making video calls to victims from locations made to resemble government offices or police stations. They demand money for a 'compromise' and 'closure of a case' against the victims. In some cases, the victims are 'digitally arrested' with the scamsters claiming that the persons are required to be visible until their demands are met. The I4C had previously found that 46% of the cyber frauds reported between January 2024 and April 2024 originated in Cambodia, Laos and Myanmar. In January, Scroll published a series of extensive reports about Chinese crime syndicates that run cyber crime centres from Southeast Asia, mainly Cambodia, Myanmar and Laos. These highly sophisticated 'scam compounds' are staffed with thousands of people, many of them from India, who are lured with fake job offers and then forced to work on scamming people back home. However, those who make scam calls from such centres are victims themselves, having been lured into going abroad through fake job offers, Scroll found. When they tried to leave, they were 'beaten mercilessly'. India's Ministry of External Affairs has warned citizens against fake job offers in Cambodia and Laos, and urged them to seek employment only through authorised agents approved by the government.
