Tom Cruise nearly played a squirrel in film made by Welsh teenagers

BBC News13-02-2025
Have you ever dreamed of writing and making your own movie that's shown in the cinema ? Now, thanks to a new project called Supporting Shorts, it's hoped that will become a reality for lots of young filmmakers. The project is all about helping young people who have additional learning needs create their own short films. It's designed for people who might find the usual movie-making rules tricky. Now a group of teenagers from a school in north Wales are the first to see a short film they made, called Race to the Start Line, make it all the way to movie screens.
Shown before the feature-length animation Dog Man, Race to the Start Line is a comedy about a boy rushing to get to a mountain bike race. The group even contacted Hollywood actor Tom Cruise for a small guest role as the voice of a stop-motion squirrel, also called Tom. In the end it was a scheduling issue that meant Tom couldn't clear his diary to join the cast of the film."Yeah, we had a bit of him back and forth, but it was. No," said Nancy, one of the actors in the film. "It was very close," adds Nancy's co-star Gareth. "He was probably busy jumping off a building or something."
Steve Swindon worked with the young people on their film, he's from an organisation called TAPE that tries to make it easier for people to get involved in filmmaking. He explained that throughout the process, it was important to take "people's ideas seriously, whatever they might be." "The Tom cruise thing, was a genuine idea. And we very nearly got him as well."It was a scheduling change that stopped it from happening in the end."But, if we hadn't asked we wouldn't be here - the confidence in the room with the young people when their question to Tom Cruise was heard and taken seriously and they got a response, the next day, changed people's self belief."
When it came to writing their film, the students at the school were first to use a new version of computer software called Final Draft, which is used by filmmakers in Hollywood. Specially adapted to make storytelling easier - it's now hoped more young people will have the opportunity to make movies, screened before feature-films in cinemas around the UK.Josh who directed Race to the Start says there hasn't always been opportunities for disabled people like him in the movie industry, but says that through the project, "we're trying to change that". He told Newsround that the process has made him feel more confident and that filmmaking is the job he would like when he's older. As this group is the first to have a film shown in cinemas, he adds that "the pressure's on" for it to be successful. Meanwhile Nancy, one of the film's stars is taking her new found fame in her stride. Asked how she feels about being on the big screen and watched by hundreds of people, she says she's waiting "for the line [of people] to queue up to ask for my autograph."

And it was a great success, which is likely why the Hollywood star has now decided to develop another sequel to one of his 80s blockbuster films. Jerry Bruckheimer, co-producer to the F1 movie, has confirmed that a sequel to Days of Thunder is in the pipeline, which will of course star Tom. Days of Thunder is a 1990 American sports action drama film which is still beloved by NASCAR fans today. There has been a lot of hope for a sequel, as well as speculation, after Tom, 62, uploaded a throwback photo on X to mark the 35th anniversary of working with late director Tony Scott. Speaking about Days of Thunder 2 in an interview with Entertainment Tonight, Jerry said: 'Well, there's always new technologies. There's always new ways to do things and to see things, and Tom is such a great individual - comes up with phenomenal ideas. 'So we'll have something really exciting for an audience once we pull it together." Former NASCAR driver Jeff Gordon has also addressed a Days of Thunder 2 being made. The chairman of Hendrick Motorsports said: 'Let's do Days of Thunder 2, I am all for that. Tom Cruise has told me it's gonna happen, so let's make it happen. Stars turn out for F1 The Movie premiere in London with Lewis Hamilton, Tom Cruise and Brad Pitt wowing fans 'I can't go back to driving, I am too old for that, so gonna have to be one of our four or all four of our Hendrick drivers, Alex Bowman, Chase Elliott, Kyle Larson, William Byron. When I came into NASCAR, Days of Thunder had just come out. It played a huge role in the growth of NASCAR. 'So let's bring it back." The US actor is always pushing the limits when it comes to his work. In May, he clambered onto the roof of the 82ft BMI Imax cinema — home to Britain's biggest screen — in a stunt to promote his latest film. Wrapped around the building in Waterloo, South London, was a giant advert for the movie, Mission: Impossible — The Final Reckoning. The 62-year-old Top Gun star was in the capital to receive an honorary British Film Institute Fellowship, the organisation's highest award. 6 Days of Thunder is a 1990 American sports action drama film which is still beloved by NASCAR fans today Credit: Alamy 6 Former NASCAR driver Jeff Gordon has also addressed a Days of Thunder 2 being made Credit: Paramount

Jonathan Ross blasts Tom Cruise's changing appearance and insists he 'doesn't look like him anymore' after the actor, 62, sparked surgery speculation

Jonathan Ross has taken a swipe at actor Tom Cruise 's changing appearance, after the actor sparked a flurry of speculation with his smooth visage. In recent weeks, Tom, 62, has hit headlines by looking remarkably younger than his previous self, though a surgeon previously told it's unlikely he's gone under the knife. Speaking in the latest episode of his Reel Talks podcast with daughter Honey, Jonathan was discussing his thoughts on the new Formula One movie F1. Comparing Tom's appearance that of the film's star Brad Pitt, the presenter said the Mission Impossible star 'doesn't look like him anymore.' He said: 'You've probably seen the poster around town - it's Brad Pitt looking incredible. 'He has aged remarkably, because even though Tom Cruise still looks good for his age, you can see there's been a bit of tweaking going on there, you know. 'He's definitely got a ton of filler in that face, I'm sure. Yeah, I've met him up close. I like Tom, he's a really nice man when you meet him. 'He's got that kind of Play-Doh face that people get when they have a lot of filler. 'To be honest, I wish he hadn't done it cos he's got such a great face, he was a naturally very handsome man when young, and he would be a handsome man when older. 'He's still… he's not unattractive, but it doesn't look that much like him anymore. You can see it doesn't look natural. 'It's not because they don't look their age, it's because the shape of the face now looks somewhat different.' Tom has hit headlines in recent weeks after fans remarked he was looking younger than his usual self. Yet a plastic surgeon confirmed to that it doesn't appear as though the actor has gone under the knife and instead his youthful look could be down to weightloss. Dr Kahn explained: 'I still say that does not look like he has had any plastic surgery. 'It actually looks like he has lots a ton of weight and been working out more. He also has a nice summer tan going on.' While there is no indication that Tom has been taking Ozempic, Dr Kahn suggested that the star may have given up carbs and alcohol as he has no puffiness in his face, which he had in 2023. Dr Kahn previously said he thinks the screen hunk may have done Microdermabrasion. 'It's a simple procedure that yields great results,' he said. Microdermabrasion (MDA) is a minimally invasive epidermal resurfacing procedure used to treat uneven skin tone/texture, photoaging, striae, melasma, and scars, including acne scars. It is one of the most common nonsurgical cosmetic procedures performed in the United States. In the past has also reported that Cruise may had gotten fillers in his face and used Botox to freeze his facial muscles.
