Sean Combs' lawyers offer US$50m bail to move him to house arrest

By: Bernama Text Size: Filepic by Reuters WASHINGTON: Lawyers for rapper Sean "Diddy" Combs ( pic ) filed a motion seeking his release from jail ahead of his sentencing in October, offering a US$50 million bail package that would place him under house arrest in Miami, reported German Press Agency (dpa). The attorneys argued that Combs poses neither a flight risk nor a danger to the public. Under the proposal, submitted on Tuesday, the 55-year-old would remain confined to his Miami residence and leave only for court appearances. Previous release requests have been denied by the presiding judge. Combs was arrested in New York in September 2024 on multiple sexual offence charges. In a high-profile trial earlier this month, a jury found him partially guilty, convicting him only on charges related to prostitution - the least severe among the five counts he faced. He now faces up to 20 years in prison. A full conviction could have led to a life sentence. Sentencing is scheduled for October 3. Combs remains in custody at the Metropolitan Detention Centre in New York. Prosecutors accused Combs of abusing, coercing, and threatening multiple women over several years to fulfil his sexual demands. Russia's FSB targets foreign embassies in Moscow in cyber espionage campaign, Microsoft says

The analysis confirms for the first time that Russia's Federal Security Service, also known as the FSB, is conducting cyber espionage at the ISP level, according to findings from Microsoft Threat Intelligence. 'Microsoft is now certain that this activity is happening within Russian borders,' Microsoft's director of Threat Intelligence Strategy, Sherrod DeGrippo, told Reuters. Microsoft's findings come amid increasing pressure from Washington for Moscow to agree to a ceasefire in its war in Ukraine and pledges from NATO countries to increase defense spending surrounding their own concerns about Russia. The analysis tracks an FSB cyber espionage campaign that in February targeted unnamed foreign embassies in Moscow. The FSB activity facilitates the installation of custom backdoors on targeted computers, which can be used to install additional malware as well as steal data. Reuters could not determine which embassies were targeted. The U.S. State Department did not respond to a request for comment. Russian diplomats did not immediately respond to a request for comment. Moscow routinely denies carrying out cyber espionage operations. The hacking unit linked to the activity, which Microsoft tracks as 'Secret Blizzard' and others categorize as 'Turla,' has been hacking governments, journalists and others for nearly 20 years, the U.S. government said in May 2023 after the FBI disrupted one of its long-running operations. The yacht that the three men from Turkiye were travelling aboard. - Photo: Bernama KUALA TERENGGANU: The Turkish men aboard the yacht Daisy, which capsized during a storm in waters off Pulau Yu on Tuesday (July 29) were on a cross-continent voyage from Malaysia to Turkiye. Kuala Terengganu OCPD Asst Comm Azli Mohd Noor said that two men, Ahmed Volkan Ata, the yacht's captain, and crew member Eser Demirkol, were missing, while the third crew member, Ates Demiroren, had been rescued. Before the incident, Captain Ahmed Volkan Ata had sailed the Daisy from Port Jackson Bay, Sydney, Australia, docking at Kuantan Port, Pahang, which served as a meeting point. The other two crew members joined from Krabi, Thailand, and Singapore, departing Kuantan for their voyage. "On July 28, at 5pm, the Daisy started its voyage and was supposed to arrive at its first checkpoint at Pattani Port, Thailand," he stated. However, the yacht encountered a storm in the waters off Pulau Yu at 2.30pm on Tuesday and is believed to have capsized, with only Ates Demiroren managing to save himself. The rescued victim is currently reported to be weak and is receiving treatment at Sultanah Nur Zahirah Hospital. The Marine Department, the Malaysia Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA), and the Turkiye Embassy have been informed of the incident for further action. "All matters involving the Turkish nationals will be managed entirely by the Turkiye Embassy, and the rescued victim will be transported home once his condition improves," he added. Terengganu MMEA director Capt (M) Hamiludin Che Awang said that the search and rescue operation was activated at 3pm, with a patrol boat dispatched to the location to search for the missing victims. – Bernama

Pakistan jails more than 100 members of ex-PM Imran Khan's party for 2023 riots

REUTERS/Stringer/File Photo LAHORE, Pakistan (Reuters) -A Pakistani anti-terrorism court on Thursday sentenced more than 100 members of jailed former Prime Minister Imran Khan's party to prison terms on charges related to riots that targeted military sites in 2023, a court order said. Fifty-eight of the defendants, who included parliamentarians and senior officials, were sentenced to 10 years in prison and the rest were given sentences ranging from one to three years, the court said. The accused include Omar Ayub Khan and Shibli Faraz, the leaders of Khan's opposition Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf party (PTI) in the lower and upper houses of parliament respectively, the court order seen by Reuters read. "The prosecution has proved its case against the accused without a shadow of doubt," it said in announcing the sentences. Khan, who has been in prison since 2023 facing charges of corruption, land fraud and disclosure of official secrets, is being tried separately on similar charges related to the riot. The government accuses him and other leaders of inciting the May 9, 2023, protests, during which demonstrators attacked military and government buildings, including the army headquarters in Rawalpindi. He denies wrongdoing and says all the cases are politically motivated as part of a military-backed crackdown to dismantle his party. The military denies it. Khan's arrest had prompted the countrywide violent protests. Thursday's ruling does not directly affect the incitement case against him in which prosecution is still presenting witnesses. The PTI party said it will challenge the verdict. The ruling is the third such mass conviction this month; Khan's party says they have included at least 14 of its parliamentarians. They will lose their seats in parliament under Pakistani laws, which will shred Khan's opposition party's strength. Another 77 were acquitted for lack of evidence in the latest verdict, which is linked to an attack on the office of an intelligence agency in eastern city of Faisalabad, the court said.
