Turkish capsize victims were on cross-continent voyage to Turkiye
KUALA TERENGGANU: The Turkish men aboard the yacht Daisy, which capsized during a storm in waters off Pulau Yu on Tuesday (July 29) were on a cross-continent voyage from Malaysia to Turkiye.
Kuala Terengganu OCPD Asst Comm Azli Mohd Noor said that two men, Ahmed Volkan Ata, the yacht's captain, and crew member Eser Demirkol, were missing, while the third crew member, Ates Demiroren, had been rescued.
Before the incident, Captain Ahmed Volkan Ata had sailed the Daisy from Port Jackson Bay, Sydney, Australia, docking at Kuantan Port, Pahang, which served as a meeting point. The other two crew members joined from Krabi, Thailand, and Singapore, departing Kuantan for their voyage.
"On July 28, at 5pm, the Daisy started its voyage and was supposed to arrive at its first checkpoint at Pattani Port, Thailand," he stated.
However, the yacht encountered a storm in the waters off Pulau Yu at 2.30pm on Tuesday and is believed to have capsized, with only Ates Demiroren managing to save himself.
The rescued victim is currently reported to be weak and is receiving treatment at Sultanah Nur Zahirah Hospital. The Marine Department, the Malaysia Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA), and the Turkiye Embassy have been informed of the incident for further action.
"All matters involving the Turkish nationals will be managed entirely by the Turkiye Embassy, and the rescued victim will be transported home once his condition improves," he added.
Terengganu MMEA director Capt (M) Hamiludin Che Awang said that the search and rescue operation was activated at 3pm, with a patrol boat dispatched to the location to search for the missing victims. – Bernama

Search for missing Turkiye national in Terengganu enters sixth day
KUALA TERENGGANU: The search for a Turkiye national missing in the waters off Pulau Yu has entered its sixth day with no significant progress. Eser Demirkol, 52, remains unlocated despite extensive efforts by rescue teams. Terengganu Maritime director Captain Maritime Hamiludin Che Awang stated that adverse weather conditions, including strong winds and rough seas, have complicated the operation. 'The sixth day of SAR efforts, which began at 7 am, was suspended at 7 pm and will resume tomorrow at 7.30 am,' he said. The search area remains focused near the sunken yacht and the spot where the second victim, Ahmet Volkan Ata, 52, was found—five nautical miles from Pulau Yu. A diving team deployed a Remote Operated Vehicle (ROV) but found no leads by 6.50 pm. Meanwhile, the two survivors, Volkan Ata and Ates Demiroren, 42, have been discharged from the hospital after their conditions stabilised. The Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA) urged the public to report any sightings of suspicious objects near the incident area to the Terengganu Maritime Operations Centre at 09-6224357. The trio, participants in a sailing expedition, were returning to Turkiye when their yacht 'Daisy' sank last Tuesday after being struck by a storm. - Bernama

MCMC probes trio over viral leftovers video given to homeless man
PUTRAJAYA: The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) has taken statements from three individuals linked to a controversial video that went viral on social media. The clip, which showed them offering leftover food to a homeless man, triggered widespread backlash online. MCMC confirmed that the individuals were questioned today at the Iskandar Puteri district police headquarters in Johor. Authorities seized three mobile phones and SIM cards as part of the investigation. The commission stated that the video contained highly offensive content, provoking public anger and touching on sensitivities within Malaysia's multiracial society. The case is being probed under Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998, which carries penalties of up to RM500,000 in fines, two years' imprisonment, or both. A Bernama check on TikTok revealed that the nearly two-minute video had been shared by multiple accounts. The footage showed three young men placing chicken bones in a rice packet before handing it to a homeless man sleeping on the sidewalk. - Bernama
