Three-day Indian Open of Surfing from May 30 at Mangalore

India Gazette29-05-2025
Mangalore (Karnataka) [India], May 29 (ANI): The surfing spotlight returns to Karnataka's coastal city of Mangalore as the sixth edition of the NMPA Indian Open of Surfing gets underway tomorrow at the Tannirbhavi Eco Beach. Scheduled from May 30 to June 1. This is the second stop of the 2025 National Surfing Championship Series.
Organized by the Surfing Swami Foundation and hosted by the Mantra Surf Club under the aegis of the Surfing Federation of India (SFI), this year's edition continues to serve as a pivotal leg in the National Championship series, drawing India's finest surfing talent for three days of high-stakes competition and valuable ranking points, as per a press release.
The three-day contest will see over 50 top surfers compete across four divisions: Men's Open, Women's Open, Groms (U-16) Boys, and Groms (U-16) Girls. Among the biggest highlights for this round is the return of defending National champion Ramesh Budihal and Kishore Kumar, two of India's top-ranked surfers who missed the previous edition but are now ready to make a statement.
They will join an elite lineup that includes Harish Muthu, Kamali P, Ajeesh Ali, Srikanth D, and Sanjay Selvamani. All of them impressed on the Asian circuit in 2024, including standout performances at the Asian Surfing Championship and the Maruhaba Cup. Their performances were key to India securing a 5th-place rank in Asia last year and also securing two quotas for the Aichi-Nagoya 2026 Asian Games.
Adding a dramatic layer to this year's edition is the surf forecast, with wave heights predicted between 10 to 12 feet across the competition dates. These powerful swells will demand precision, stamina, and strategy, elevating both the thrill of the contest and the difficulty for competitors. Due to cyclonic activity and unpredictable weather patterns over the Arabian Sea, the ocean may prove to be an unpredictable competitor and play a spoilsport to the event schedule. The heightened challenge will also have implications for national rankings, especially with the Asian Surf Championship 2025, a qualifier for the 2026 Asian Games, on the horizon.
Originally scheduled at Sasihithlu Beach, this year's competition has been relocated to Tannirbhavi Eco Beach due to unfavourable weather and wave patterns at the former site. While Sasihithlu has been synonymous with the Indian Open of Surfing for years, the new venue promises comparable wave quality while ensuring better safety conditions for surfers and spectators alike.
This year too, the event continues to enjoy unwavering backing from key partners. The New Mangalore Port Authority (NMPA) returns as the Title Sponsor for the second consecutive year, while Karnataka Tourism presents the championship for the sixth year running. Cycle Pure Agarbathies also continues its association as the Powered By sponsor for the second straight year.
'We are excited to bring the sixth edition of the NMPA Indian Open of Surfing to the coast of Mangalore. With a strong field of athletes and a challenging forecast of 10-12 ft waves, we are in for an intense and exciting three days of competition. This event wouldn't be possible without the unwavering support of New Mangalore Port Authority, Karnataka Tourism, and Cycle Pure Agarbathies, who continue to champion the growth of surfing in India,' said Rammohan Paranjape, Vice President of Surfing Federation of India and Director at Mantra Surf Club.
In the lead-up to the sixth edition of NMPA IOS, local Grom events have been underway, aiming to unearth the next wave of surfing talent in the region. These grassroots competitions not only build momentum ahead of the national championship, but also set the stage for a sustainable pipeline of talent. (ANI)

"Not Received Any Clearance": Hockey India President Dilip Tirkey On Pakistan Men's Hockey Team Travelling To India

Former captain and Hockey India president Dilip Tirkey confirmed that the board hasn't received any clearance from the government about the Pakistan men's hockey team travelling to India for the Asia Cup and Junior Hockey World Cup, which are set to be held in the nation later this year. There is uncertainty over Pakistan's men's hockey team's participation in the tournaments after the cross-border tension between India and Pakistan escalated in May earlier this year. India will host the Asia Cup from August 29 to September 7 at the recently developed Rajgir Hockey Stadium in Bihar. The Men's Junior Hockey World Cup is scheduled to take place from November 28 to December 10 in Tamil Nadu. Tirkey addressed the ongoing reports about Pakistan travelling to India and participating in the tournament and told ANI, "We have seen many tournaments, and whenever there is a match between India and Pakistan, the whole world likes to watch it. Two tournaments that we are going to host, Pakistan is going to participate in both. However, till now, we have not received any clearance; once we get it, we will move forward accordingly." Pakistan's men's hockey team toured India for the Hockey World Cup in 2018. Apart from Pakistan, India will host Japan, Korea, China, Malaysia, Oman and Chinese Taipei in the next month's Asia Cup. Meanwhile, in the Junior Hockey World Cup, India and Pakistan have been drafted in Pool B alongside Chile and Switzerland. While the Pakistan hockey team is travelling to India, it remains to be seen if their men's cricket team will cross the border for the Asia Cup, which is scheduled to be held in India, the official host of the tournament, later this year. In February this year, the Indian team didn't travel to Pakistan for the Champions Trophy and played all their matches at a neutral venue in Dubai. It was also confirmed that the hybrid model will be adopted for all ICC events in the 2024-27 cycle, which will be held in India or Pakistan.

How VVS Laxman ensured Vaibhav Suryavanshi and his India U19 teammates witnessed Shubman Gill's masterful 269 at Edgbaston

Shubman Gill put on a show on Day 2 of the second Test between India and England and Vaibhav Suryavanshi was among the under-19 stars who were there at Edgbaston to witness it. Gill scored 269 in 387 balls which helped India put up a mammoth total 587. India then went on to take three wickets to finish the second day firmly on top. The India U19 team is also in England, touring the nation for five Youth ODIs and two Youtn tests. Their coach Hrishikesh Kanitkar said in a video posted on the Board of Control for Cricket in India's (BCCI) website that National Cricket Academy (NCA) head and batting great VVS Laxman was instrumental in making sure that the colts were at Edgbaston on the day. 'VVS Laxman was instrumental in arranging this. He was the one who actually said that it would be a good thing to go and watch this game. It's definitely a special occasion for any upcoming cricketer to be at a Test venue,' said Kanitkar in a video posted by BCCI. Gill shared a stand of 203 runs off 279 balls with Ravindra Jadeja (89 in 137) and 144 with Washington Sundar (42 off 103) and all of this allowed India to set up a mammoth total of 587. England then lost three wickets before Stumps on Day 2. India then started the third day in emphatic fashion, with Mohammed Siraj sending back Joe Root and Ben Stokes off consecutive deliveries in just the second over of the day. However, India have since been flattened by a mammoth stand between Harry Brook and Jamie Smith, both of whom have scored centuries. Gill, who became the 26th Indian cricketer to hit a Test double hundred, also became the first Asian captain to score a double hundred in a Test match in England with his 387-ball knock of 269. It also meant that he made the highest individual score by an Indian batsman in England as he surpassed Sunil Gavaskar's 221 scored at the Oval. His knock is also the highest-ever Test score by an Indian captain as he surpassed Virat Kohli's unbeaten 254 against South Africa in 2019.
