Vishay Intertechnology joins Wales Tech Week 2025 partners

Vishay Intertechnology, a US-based firm with operations in Newport, has been announced as a gold partner for the event, which will take place at the International Convention Centre (ICC) Wales from November 24 to 26.
The company, which employs 23,000 people worldwide, manufactures semiconductors in multiple countries and acquired its Newport site—now the UK's largest semiconductor manufacturing facility—in March 2024.
Avril Lewis, managing director of Technology Connected, organisers of Wales Tech Week, said: "Compound semiconductors play a vital role in the world around us and we're delighted that a world-leading company such as Vishay Intertechnology has partnered with Wales Tech Week to help showcase some of the cutting-edge work that they do, in what is such an important industry.
"Their recently announced investment shows the confidence that they have in the manufacturing potential of Wales, and it's great to see the South Wales semiconductor cluster continuing to grow and attract international interest and recognition."
Vishay recently announced a £250 million investment in the Newport facility to expand production of silicon carbide semiconductors.
These advanced components are crucial to electric vehicle (EV) technology.
The company says they enable faster battery charging, more efficient energy delivery to motors, and longer driving ranges for EVs.
The investment is expected to directly support more than 500 high-value jobs in Wales and create further opportunities throughout the supply chain.
Roy Shoshani, executive vice president and chief operating officer – semiconductors and chief technical officer at Vishay Intertechnology, said: "When Vishay acquired Newport Wafer Fab last year, we wanted to take advantage of the global growth opportunity in compound semiconductors.
"We knew we would benefit from Wales's track record in innovation, its highly skilled and committed workforce, and the spirit of collaboration within the South Wales Compound Semiconductor Cluster.
"As gold sponsors of Wales Tech Week 2025, we're excited to showcase Wales's expertise in semiconductors on the world stage."
Vishay is also working with further and higher education providers to promote careers in the semiconductor industry.

The self-made QTS mogul, 65, dubbed one of Scotland's richest men, has listed Bogside House near Monkton, Ayrshire following the end of his marriage to ex-wife Phyllis. Sign up for Scottish Sun newsletter Sign up 12 Alan McLeish 12 Bogside House is described as "one-of-a-kind" 12 The pad has its own football pitch, golf course and swimming pool The luxury pad - which the couple purchased in 2014 for £872,000 - comes complete with a floodlit 4G sports pitch, nine-hole golf course, indoor swimming pool, sauna, steam room, and gym. Inside there's a swanky bar and a custom-built entertainment and karaoke room. Outside there's an outdoor TV in the courtyard and a fire pit as well as a separate two-bedroom annex for guests, all set within lush private grounds. McLeish's love for the Ibrox side is evident in some of the pictures as framed Rangers jerseys adorn some of the walls inside the home. The property, which is being listed by Ayr and Irvine-based estate agents, Donald Ross Residential, is described as "one-of-a-kind". The listing says: "Bogside House is a truly exceptional lifestyle estate, offering a rare combination of luxury, privacy, and recreation across approximately 11 acres of immaculately landscaped grounds. "Whether unwinding in the games room, entertaining in the conservatory with built-in fire pit table, or strolling through the tranquil gardens, every element of Bogside House is crafted for luxury living and effortless entertaining. "This is a one-of-a-kind sanctuary, a rare offering in the marketplace, defined by its scale, versatility, and exclusivity." McLeish started his business Quality Tree Surgeons (QTS) back in 1991 after borrowing £300 from his mum to buy a chainsaw. Since then he turned QTS into a rail empire, eventually selling it for a whopping £80million in 2018. This house has appeared on dozens of hit TV shows - but would YOU recognise it? McLeish spent years throwing millions into his beloved Rangers FC and QTS sponsored rivals Kilmarnock for 10 years. McLeish, 65, and ex Phyllis settled their divorce last year for less than £125,000 - a fraction of the £16.5million Phyllis, a boss at Kilmarnock FC, had been initially asking for. 12 The walls are adorned by framed Rangers tops Credit: Donald Ross 12 The home has a swanky bar and entertainment area 12 The impressive hallway in the house has two staircases 12 The property boasts an indoor pool and jacuzzi 12 The rail tycoon's property is spread over 11 acres 12 The house is on the market for a cool £1.8million The exes were locked in a courtroom standoff for three years before reaching a deal. As part of the settlement Alan kept the Monkton mansion and agreed to cover half the value of two luxury homes in Spain. Alan's daughter Jennifer McLeish put her own luxury home on the market last year following a spate of firebombing attacks. In January 2023, thugs left vulgar sexual insults trashing Mcleish on walls in central Bothwell. Maniacs also drove a motor to her front gate before setting it ablaze and fleeing. The fire spread to the fence of McLeish's neighbour at the time, former Celtic star Leigh Griffiths. The attacks are understood to be linked to a fall-out between Mcleish's partner Brian McIlear and a known- Glasgow hood. In Hamilton, a wall in the David Lloyd gym car park was daubed with personal insults aimed at Jennifer. 12 The impressive property even boasts a sauna, as well as a gym, pool and steam room 12 The new owners will be able to relax in the steam room

Exclusive: Grammarly acquires email startup Superhuman in AI platform push

July 1 (Reuters) - Grammarly has acquired email efficiency tool Superhuman as part of the company's push to build an artificial intelligence-powered productivity suite and diversify its business, its executives told Reuters in an interview. The San Francisco-based companies declined to disclose the financial terms of the deal. Superhuman, once an exclusive email tool boasting a long waitlist for new users, was last valued at $825 million in 2021, and currently has an annual revenue of about $35 million. Grammarly's acquisition of Superhuman follows its recent $1 billion funding from General Catalyst, which gives it dry powder to create a collection of AI-powered workplace tools. Founded in 2005, the company has over 40 million daily users and an annual revenue exceeding $700 million. It's working on a name change with an ambition to expand beyond grammar correction. Superhuman, with over $110 million in funding from investors including IVP and Andreessen Horowitz, has been trying to create an efficient email experience by integrating AI. The company claims its users send and respond to 72% more emails per hour, and the percentage of emails composed with its AI tools has increased fivefold in the past year. It also faces growing competition as email giants from Google to Microsoft are adding more AI features. "Email continues to be the dominant communication tool for the world. Professionals spend something like three hours a day in their inboxes. It's by far the most used work app, foundational to any productivity suite," said Shashir Mehrotra, CEO of Grammarly. "Superhuman is the obvious leading innovator in the space." Last year's purchase of startup Coda gave Grammarly a platform for AI agents to help users research, analyze, and collaborate. Email, according to Mehrotra who co-founded Coda, was the next logical step. Superhuman CEO Rahul Vohra will join Grammarly as part of the deal, along with over 100 Superhuman employees. 'The Superhuman product, team, and brand will continue,' Mehrotra said. 'It's a very well-used product by tens of thousands of people, and we want to see them continue to make progress.' Vohra said that the deal will give Superhuman access to 'significantly greater resources' and allow it to invest more heavily in AI, as well as expand into calendars, tasks, and collaboration tools. Mehrotra and Vohra see an opportunity to integrate Grammarly's AI agents directly into Superhuman, and build the tools for enterprise customers. The vision is for users to tap into a network of specialized agents, pulling data from across their digital workflows such as emails and documents, which will reduce time spent searching for information or crafting responses. The company is also entering a crowded space of AI productivity tools, competing with tech giants such as Salesforce and a wave of startups.
