An Australian teenager tragically died last week after suffering severe brain damage from a botched backflip.
Sonny Blundell, 18, was reportedly celebrating with best friend Mitchell Bullard on June 24 inside their new apartment in Queensland when he attempted the stunt.
Blundell's sister, Izabella Cromack-Hay, told The Daily Telegraph that her brother had just relocated from New South Wales to "start a new life with his girlfriend" before the accident. Cromack-Hay had FaceTimed with Blundell earlier in the day.
'He hit his head in the lounge room on the ground and had a headache went to bed,' Cromack-Hay told the outlet. '[He] woke up, went to the toilet vomiting and then passed out. That's when his best friend found him unresponsive in the morning.'
Blundell was rushed to the Queensland Hospital Intensive Care Unit and was placed in a coma. According to the GoFundMe page set up for Blundell, he suffered "multiple strokes" within the first 24 hours of his confinement. He underwent brain surgery but died six days after the incident.
Cromack-Hay shared the tragic news on a GoFundMe page that had raised over $16,600 as of Saturday morning. The pupils were looking at the flotation process when the grid plate they were standing on suddenly gave way, resulting in them falling into a flotation tank, per NBC News, citing local news agency Xinhua, According to Reuters and China Daily, a teacher was also injured in the incident. The mine is reportedly operated by Zhongjin Gold, a subsidiary of the state-owned China National Gold Group. 'Despite rescue efforts, all six students were confirmed drowned after being pulled from the tank. One teacher was also injured,' Zhongjin Gold said in a company filing on Thursday, per NBC News. According to Reuters, an emergency plan was activated by Zhongjin Gold following the incident. The students were pronounced dead by medical staff after being rescued from the tank, per China Daily. PEOPLE has contacted Zhongjin Gold and Northeastern University for comment. According to NBC News, principal and vice chancellor of Edinburgh-based Heriot-Watt University, Richard Williams, said a person that falls in the tank could pass through thick foam on top 'and then find themselves in a mixed slurry or in contact with the mixer blades.' 'These types of accidents are rare. But mine safety remains a global challenge due to the nature of the work,' he added. A mother and her two children who were found dead have been named as a police investigation into their deaths continues. Vanessa Whyte, a veterinary surgeon originally from Co Clare; her son, James, and daughter, Sara, died following a shooting in Co Fermanagh. A fourth person, a man, remains in a serious condition in hospital after the incident in the Drummeer Road area of Maguiresbridge on Wednesday. All four people are members of the same household and all four suffered gunshot wounds, police said. A murder investigation has been launched and police are pursuing a triple murder and attempted suicide line of inquiry.
