Junior PGA Championships: 6 Palm Beach County golfers make the first cut

Yahoo4 days ago
Six Palm Beach County golfers have made the cut at the 49th Boys & Girls Junior PGA Championships in West Lafayette, Indiana.
Jupiter's Charlie Woods, a rising junior at the Benjamin School, and Boca Raton's Catherine Andino, a rising junior at West Boca Raton High, are the low local players in each tournament, respectively.
The Junior PGA Championships are comprised of two 72-hole stroke play tournaments for boys and girls junior amateur golfers. This year's boys and girls tournaments each featured 156 golfers, respectively.
The tournament cut to the top 60 plus ties after Wednesday's second round. It will cut down to the top 30 plus ties after the third round on Thursday.
The Junior PGA Championships were first hosted in 1976 and have a long history in Palm Beach County.
From 1980-2000, the event was hosted PGA National Golf Club in Palm Beach Gardens in all but two years. In 1990, Tiger Woods finished runner-up to Fort Lauderdale's Chris Couch at PGA National.

Rory McIlroy's absence from first portion of PGA Tour postseason draws concerns from organizers

Rory McIlroy has had another busy schedule this season. But this week, he found a way to lessen his workload. McIlroy elected to skip the St. Jude Championship at TPC Southwind in Memphis, much to the dismay of at least one PGA Tour organizer. Peter Malnati, a player director on the PGA Tour Policy Board, said he was "very concerned" by McIlroy's decision. The FedEx St. Jude Championship serves as the first leg of the playoffs. The BMW Championship is the playoff's second leg, while the Tour Championship later this month in Atlanta will conclude the 2025 postseason. McIlroy's choice appeared to prompt PGA Tour officials to mull a rule change that could mathematically lock in certain players to the second and third playoff legs. McIlroy and PGA Tour playoffs top-seeded golfer Scottie Scheffler accumulated so many points from events throughout the season that their leads would keep them within the top-50 and top-30 thresholds that the upcoming tournaments mandate. The Tour Championship at East Lake in Atlanta brings the year's top-30 players together for a shot at the FedEx Cup trophy. Malnati hinted that a rule change was possibly on the horizon. "I think there is stuff in the works, and I'll leave it at that," he told GolfWeek. Meanwhile, Jordan Spieth pushed back against the idea McIlroy's actions will be the start of a trend for other players. Spieth previously served as the PGA Tour policy player director. "You might have 1-2 guys do that for an event, but I don't think it will become a thing because they are still huge events against the best players in the world," Spieth said. "I think they're trying to figure out how to make sure you don't skip both of them and ideally neither of them." McIlroy's absence was not completely unexpected, considering he previously hinted that he was contemplating skipping this year's St. Jude Championship. "There's a few tournaments that I played this year that I don't usually play and that I might not play next year," McIlroy told The Telegraph in Nov. 2024. "I played the Cognizant in Palm Beach Gardens, [the Valero Texas Open in] San Antonio and [the RBC Heritage at] Hilton Head. And I'll probably not play the first playoff event in Memphis. I mean, I finished basically dead last there this year and only moved down one spot in the playoff standings." Despite missing the first leg of the postseason, McIlroy is expected to compete in the penultimate event of the playoffs in Baltimore and the final leg in Atlanta later this month. The Northern Irishman is also slated to be lead participant for Europe in this year's Ryder Cup at Bethpage Black in New York.

Sophie Cunningham calls out DeWanna Bonner for handling of Fever exit: 'Expect getting booed'

Indiana Fever star Sophie Cunningham addressed the departure of former teammate DeWanna Bonner from the team in a controversial breakup this season. Bonner stepped away from the team just nine games into the season, citing "personal reasons" while the team tried to trade her. Indiana then released Bonner on June 29, and she returned to the Phoenix Mercury, where she started her career in 2009. Cunningham, who previously played with Bonner for the Mercury in 2009, praised Bonner as a player but also suggested Bonner showed a lack of "professionalism" in her departure. "I'm still rooting for her. I want her to end her career and be happy, but I also think like, it's OK to be professional about it. Send a text to your teammates, send a text like, 'Hey, love you guys,' or you don't even have to say, 'Love you guys.' Say, 'Sorry this didn't work out, good luck…' There's a way to handle that, I think," Cunningha said on an episode of her podcast Tuesday. Bonner returned to Indianapolis and was booed by the fans. Cunningham said Bonner should have expected boos from Fever fans based on how her departure played out. "I was kind of surprised she signed here in Indiana anyway, so we'll take her in a heartbeat. She's a Hall of Famer. She's a helluva basketball player, can score from anywhere on the court," Cunningham said. "She got to Indiana, and she just wasn't really happy, and I want people to be happy, so that's why I'm kind of like neutral on this one, which everyone is surprised about. She's toward the end of her career, like she deserves her flowers, she deserves to be happy. But I also think that if you're going to leave, you're going to have to expect getting booed." The boos didn't sit right with Mercury star Kahleah Copper. The four-time All-Star and WNBA champion thought Bonner handled the boos well, but she didn't understand why the jeers happened in the first place. "I just don't understand. Like, she's a legend. All the things she's done for the league, and just then the disrespect, I just can't get down with it. They booed her. She didn't say a word to the crowd. People talked some trash to her, but we had her back," Copper said, via the Indy Star. "It's just very distasteful what their fan base is doing when it comes to DB. She is just the sweetest soul. The situation didn't work for her. It just wasn't what she wanted or whatever, but we don't need all of that. It's just unnecessary."
