Bengal Police reconstruct Kolkata gangrape crime scene, bring in arrested accused
Earlier, the Kolkata High Court sought a response from the West Bengal Government on three Public Interest Litigations (PILs) regarding the alleged gangrape at the South Calcutta Law College in the Kasba area.
The Court also questioned why the governing body of the college was not included in the case.
On July 2, Kolkata Police stated that the Detective Department of the police force would take over the investigation in the alleged gang rape case.
This comes after a student was allegedly gangraped inside the South Calcutta Law College in Kasba area in the capital city of West Bengal on June 25. Five days later, on June 30, Kolkata Police said that the three main accused in the case were arrested in less than 12 hours.
Earlier, BJP's fact-finding committee member Manan Kumar Mishra stated alleged that the police were 'hiding' the family of the rape survivor and not allowing anyone to meet the security guard, who is the fourth accused in the incident.
He further alleged that there was an attempt to 'tamper' with the First Information Report (FIR) to change the name of the accused.
Mishra told ANI, 'We visited everyone there and met other college staff also. When we saw some documents, it showed that some tampering had been done with the FIR. By looking at the document, it looks like someone attempted to change the name of the accused. We tried to talk to the victim, but it looks like the police are hiding the family of the victim. The guard is the best witness in this case, but they have also arrested him and are not letting him meet anyone.'
'We will submit our report; however, that is a different thing, how the government of Mamata Banerjee will work on this,' he said.
The Alipore court had on Tuesday sent the three main accused to police custody till July 8.
The Court also sent the security guard, the fourth accused, to custody till July 4. The accused, Monojit, Pramit, and Zaib, will remain in police custody until July 8. The security guard, Pinaki, will be in custody until July 4. (ANI)

Delhi: Double murder witness shot dead in Najafgarh, police suspect gang war
New Delhi [India], July 5 (ANI): Unidentified bike-borne gunmen shot dead their rival in the Najafgarh area of the national capital on Friday, police said. The deceased has been identified as Neeraj Tehlan, who was reportedly involved in several criminal cases in the past and was carrying a bounty of Rs 1 lakh on his head. He was also a key witness in the high-profile Najafgarh double murder case of February 2024. Tehlan was attacked around 7:15 PM on Friday while he was sitting inside a car. Two to three bike-borne assailants opened multiple rounds of fire at him before fleeing the scene, police said. The police suspect that the murder may have been orchestrated by gangster Harsh Dhanakad, alias Chintu, who was recently deported from abroad, and Sanjay alias Sanju Dahiya, a known criminal currently based overseas. Police have cordoned off the area and launched an investigation. CCTV footage from the vicinity is being reviewed to identify the attackers. Last week, gangster Kapil Sangwan's shooters murdered Deepak, the nephew of notorious Manjeet Mahal. Deepak's daughter was also shot at in the melee. Deepak was shot dead on June 27 in a planned attack during his morning walk in Delhi's Bawana area. Police sources say the crime was carried out with full preparation by unidentified assailants, who had been watching Deepak and his movements for the last four days. According to CCTV footage gathered during the investigation, the attackers had conducted a recce of Deepak's house and his daily routine. They found out that Deepak regularly went on a morning walk with his family. On June 27, two bike-borne attackers took advantage of the situation and fired around six bullets at him, killing him on the spot. The Delhi Police also suspect that the Kapil Sangwan alias Nandu gang might have orchestrated the murder of Deepak, believed to be operating from abroad, as part of a long-standing gang rivalry. Deepak, a 43-year-old trader with no criminal background, was shot dead during a morning walk with his daughter in Delhi's Bawana area After completing his BTech, Deepak got involved in trading and lived with his parents, wife and children in Nangal Thakran village of Bawana. Deepak used to go for a morning walk with his entire family on Bawana Road every morning. Even on June 27, during the attack, Deepak's parents were walking behind him, and Deepak was walking with his daughter at a distance when two attackers on a bike fired several rounds at Deepak, killing him on the spot. At the same time, a bullet hit Deepak's daughter and has been admitted to the hospital. According to sources, the two real sisters of gangster Manjit Mahal were married to Devendra and his younger brother Deepak. The long-standing feud between the two gangs had earlier claimed the life of property dealer Rajkumar Daral, a close associate of Manjit Mahal, who was gunned down in April in Paschim Vihar. (ANI)

TOI reconstructs the real crime that led to campus gang rape
Cops on Friday took the accused in the law college rape case to the scene of crime and reconstructed what happened last Wednesday to come up with a water-tight case in court. But the crime that Monojit Mishra, Pramit Mukherjee and Zaib Ahmed are alleged to have committed is bred by several systemic faults — of both omission and commission — that give these criminals a sense of immunity and impunity. CRIME & NO PUNISHMENT Monojit Mishra, the main accused in the alleged gang rape of the 24-year-old law student, was a repeat offender with 11 cases, including molestation, registered against him at multiple police stations such as Kalighat, Haridevpur, Kasba, Tollygunge and Gariahat. He was arrested thrice. Though charge sheets were submitted in all 11 cases, he got bail within a short time in each case. There were four charges of molestation against Mishra, including one in 2019 where a female student accused him of tearing her clothes in the college and another in 2022 when a woman accused him of assault, theft, and vandalism. Among the past cases were allegations of assaulting a man in Kalighat in 2017, stealing gadgets and electronic items from a friend's home during a New Year's Eve party in Jan 2020, and a complaint of beating a security guard in the law college in May 2024. CHAIN INACTION Apart from the 11 cases, the former principal of the law college wrote a letter to the Kolkata Police Joint Commissioner (HQ) in Dec 2018, expressing concerns over Mishra and his associate's problematic conduct during college programmes and sought security for the college's social programme. Despite being accused of vandalism, Mishra was not only allowed access to the institution, but he was also recruited on the alleged recommendation of the college managing committee. A student said that a sexual harassment complaint was lodged, but no action was taken against him. LATERAL ENTRY Mishra first took admission to the law college in 2012 but was expelled the next year for his criminal activities. He then took admission again in 2017. That very year, he ransacked the campus, following which he was again barred from the campus. Mishra subsequently graduated in 2022. In 2023, after the TMCP unit at the college was dissolved, Mishra was rehabilitated, brought back to the campus, and unofficially given control of the college. Monojit's Facebook profile showed that he was a former president of the college TMCP unit. In 2024, he re-entered as an ad-hoc staff member despite objections from a majority of students and teachers to control the college and its admissions. His recruitment did not follow any procedures. He was handed the job on a platter at the governing body (GB) meeting on July 2, 2024, where only four members out of eight participated, including GB president and Budge Budge MLA Ashok Deb and vice-principal Nayna Chatterji, GB secretary. The majority of teachers and students raised objections. A student said that the vice-principal assured them that Monojit had changed. CONTROL OVER CAMPUS Mishra had demi-god status among a section of students and the administration. He had access on his phone to the college CCTV footage and blackmailed students and teachers with footage to extort. He had the keys to the guard room, union room, and even the campus. He had access to every document on the campus, like details of students, and would call them over the phone or even send his cronies to issue threats at their residences. He reportedly controlled 10-15 admissions each year, with a going rate ranging between Rs 50,000 to Rs 2 lakhs for each admission. Mishra had no assigned job role. He signed the attendance sheet for the entire month at a time and attended campus mostly after duty hours. If any teacher spoke against his irregular attendance or bribery, he issued death threats. Wielding his political clout and connections, he would threaten to kill students and do harm to their families if they spoke against him. Some female survivors were scared to lodge complaints after they were molested by him since they received threats. He had the audacity to walk into a classroom during lectures and call his associates away. He was also the admin of all the WhatsApp groups in the college. He morphed pictures of female students on nude pics and blackmailed them by circulating them. He stayed at the campus till late at night and engaged in drinking and other sorts of substance abuse.

West Bengal: Court award life imprisonment to rape accused in post-poll violence rape case
ANI 05 Jul 2025, 00:35 GMT+10 Malda (West Bengal) [India] July 4 (ANI): The Additional District and Sessions Judge of the 2nd POCSO Court in Malda, West Bengal, rendered a sentence of life imprisonment to the defendant in a case involving rape. The accused identified as Rafikul Islam aka Bhelu sentenced to life imprisonment with a fine of Rs. 50,000/- for committing rape on a minor girl below 12 years of age. The case pertaining to the rape of a minor girl aged around 9 years was registered by CBI, by taking over the investigation of FIR dated June 5, 2021 of PS Manickchak, Dist Mandela in compliance to the orders dated August 19, 2021, of the Calcutta High Court entrusting the investigation of Post-Poll Violence (PPV) Cases to the CBI. Investigation conducted had revealed that the victim minor girl aged around 9 years was raped by accused Rafikul Islam aka Bhelu (Retired School teacher of a Govt. School in Malda) in the evening of June 4, 202,1 while she was playing in the mango orchard of the accused by alluring her with money. The incident of rape was witnessed by the cousin of the victim who is also a minor girl aged around 10 years. Both the victim and the eye witness deposed strongly about the incident of rape before the trial Court. On July 2, 2025, the Court had pronounced the judgment convicting the accused, Rafikul Islam. The Court has further directed that the State of West Bengal shall provide Rs 3 lakhs to the victim from the 'Victim Compensation Fund'. (ANI)
