Man injured after falling face first onto durian

The Star3 days ago
A man found himself in a prickly situation after a bizarre incident involving his motorcycle, a pick-up truck and a durian left him with dozens of wounds to his face.
According to Thai media outlet Channel 7, the 48-year-old man was riding his motorcycle in Buriram when he crashed into the back of a pick-up truck on July 15.
The collision caused him to be flung off his motorcycle, landing face first onto a singular durian covered by a plastic bag.
The motorcyclist, known only as Somchai, was left with puncture wounds to his face from the spikes of the fruit.
The Muang Buriram Police Station received a call for assistance at about 5pm that day, said Channel 7.
When they arrived at the scene, the police found Somchai slumped beneath a tree with visible puncture wounds to his face.
He said he did not know what he had landed on and that he was not speeding before the accident occurred. — The Straits Times/ANN

Two found dead after fire in Toa Payoh flat

SCDF and Singapore Police Force personnel at Block 173 Lorong 1 Toa Payoh on July 22. - ST SINGAPORE: A man and a woman were found dead after a fire broke out in an HDB flat in Toa Payoh on Tuesday (July 22) evening. The Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) said in a Facebook post at about 9.15pm that it had responded to the blaze at around 7.30pm at Block 173 Toa Payoh Lorong 1. When firefighters arrived at the unit located on the second floor, the living room was on fire. They entered the smoke-filled flat and extinguished the flames using a water jet. 'During the firefighting operation, firefighters found two unresponsive persons inside the unit and immediately carried them out,' SCDF said. The police said: 'A 56-year-old man and a 61-year-old woman were found lying motionless in a unit and were pronounced dead at scene by an SCDF paramedic.' Videos circulating on social media show several residents at the block's void deck being assisted by police officers. Flashing sirens from emergency vehicles can be seen reflected against the facade of the block. Cai added that other residents in the block have expressed difficulty cleaning up following the blaze, especially families with asthmatic children and seniors. 'So we have informed the town council about the affected units, and we will engage with them to arrange for contractors to come and clean tomorrow,' he said. A resident who lives next to the affected unit, Wu Tian Jiao, told The Straits Times that he was in the kitchen with his wife when they saw smoke. 'We were frightened and we ran down. I saw the fire coming out from both windows in the unit,' said Wu, 66, a retiree. He said the dead man and woman, who were in their 50s or 60s, had been living in the affected unit for about one year. Wu said he and his wife had not spoken to the pair before. The cause of the fire is under investigation. There were 80 cases of injury from fire and five fire-related deaths in 2024, according to SCDF statistics. Including this latest incident, six fire-related deaths have been reported so far in 2025, already surpassing 2024's total. - The Straits Times/ANN

Blast sparks new tensions

The country has accused Cambodia of placing landmines in a disputed border area after three soldiers were injured, but Phnom Penh denied the claim and said the soldiers had veered off agreed routes and triggered a mine left behind from decades of war. Thai authorities said the three soldiers were injured by a landmine while on a patrol on July 16 on the Thai side of the disputed border area between Ubon Ratchathani and Cambodia's Preah Vihear province. Cambodia's foreign ministry denied that new mines had been planted, and said in a statement on Monday night that the Thai soldiers deviated from agreed patrol routes into Cambodian territory and into areas that contain unexploded landmines. The country is littered with landmines laid during decades of war. 'The Royal Government of Cambodia categorically denies these baseless and unfounded allegations,' the ministry said. It added the country was fully committed to the Ottawa Convention, an international agreement banning anti-personnel landmines. On Monday, the Thai army said that 10 freshly laid Russian-made PMN-2 type landmines, which are not used or stockpiled by Thailand, were found between July 18 and July 20 in areas near where the soldiers were injured. 'This is a clear violation of the sovereignty and territorial integrity of the Kingdom of Thailand and an outright breach of principles that are fundamental to international law,' Maratee Nalita Andamo, deputy spokesperson for the Thai Foreign Ministry, said on Monday in Bangkok. Figures from the Cambodia Mine Action Centre, which estimates there are still four to six million landmines scattered across the country, show five people were killed and a dozen injured by mines and unexploded ordnance in Cambodia in the first four months of 2025. The area where the Thai soldiers were injured is near where a Cambodian soldier was killed in May after a brief exchange of gunfire between the troops. The shooting has since flared into a broader diplomatic dispute between the neighbours that has destabilised the Thai government and seen the Prime Minister suspended from office. — Reuters

Thai rider arrested with Trump-shaped ecstasy pills

A food delivery rider in Thailand has been apprehended for possessing ecstasy pills uniquely shaped like the face of Donald Trump. According to Thai news portal Khaosod, police officers in Wang Thonglang District, Bangkok, stopped and searched 35-year-old Ekkarin on July 21 (Monday) after he exhibited suspicious behavior and attempted to evade a traffic checkpoint. During the search, authorities discovered 59 ecstasy pills among other items in his possession. A preliminary urine test also revealed the presence of methamphetamine in the motorcyclist's system, a finding later confirmed by medical professionals. When questioned, the suspect, who works as a food delivery rider, claimed he had acquired the illicit drugs for his personal consumption. Police stated that they did not uncover any evidence suggesting an intent to distribute the drugs. Ekkarin has been formally charged with possession of ecstasy pills, operating a motorcycle while under the influence of narcotics, and illegal drug use. He has since been transferred to Chokchai police station, along with the seized evidence, for further investigation and legal proceedings.
