Kane Cornes blasts the AFL's ‘dumbest rule ever'

Kane Cornes has had an absolute gutful of what he calls 'the dumbest rule the AFL have ever brought in'. The 'stand rule' was first implemented back in 2021 and has had a number of tweaks since, all designed to speed up play and theoretically increase scoring in the competition. FOX FOOTY, available on Kayo Sports, is the only place to watch every match of every round in the 2025 Toyota AFL Premiership Season LIVE in 4K, with no ad-breaks during play. New to Kayo? Get your first month for just $1. Limited-time offer. The numbers don't reflect that intention, however, and the rule has led to instances just about every week of players, fans and commentators being left confused over 50 metre penalties related to the rule. Port Adelaide premiership player Cornes believes it's time for the rule to be scrapped. 'It's an absolute mess … and I've had enough,' he said on Channel 7's The Agenda Setters. 'I've had enough of the dumbest rule the AFL have ever brought in and that is the stand rule. 'I'm so sick of it, I've given it a chance, it's been four or five years, it is just not working and it is far too complicated for everyone.' The program played a number of examples of the rule being breached last weekend, including Collingwood's clash with West Coast and Sam Darcy coming out of the forward line to mark a Swans player at the SCG. 'How this is a 50 and a goal is just blowing my mind that we are asking our players to not move on the mark,' Cornes continued. 'Even when they do it well, like Sam Darcy here – what more could he do? What do you want him to do? And that's 50. 'How are we accepting of this as an industry? This is costing goals, (Darcy) couldn't believe it.' Callum Mills is also shown being pinged in the same match against the Dogs, along with Lions forward Charlie Cameron against Geelong's Mark Blicavs in round 15. 'It hasn't done anything for scoring. The reason it was brought in, OK it was going to fix ball movement and scoring, well it's not,' Cornes said. 'It has done next to nothing when it comes to scoring and improving that. 'The stand rule, I've had enough, players have had enough, I'm sure those watching at home are sick of it. 'Nice try but let's just get back to footy the way it should be played and make life easier for everyone.' On the same program, Lions veteran Dayne Zorko was asked what he finds the 'most frustrating element of footy right now' and he immediately mentioned the contentious rule. 'There's a number but I think guarding the mark is one of the hardest ones,' he said. 'Players normally nail most changes, I think we're still struggling with this one.' Fans were left pretty divided over the rule change and the way it is interpreted. Bill Williams wrote on X: 'In my opinion the stand rule is brilliant. Who wants to go back to watching the man on the 'mark' carrying on like a headless chook or the ball carrier having to constantly ask the umpire 'where's the mark' as the marker could be any distance from the actual mark. A great improvement.' Ben Cameron tweeted: 'The decision against Mills in this clip is everything that's wrong with the current umpiring, Kennedy marks but Mills has no idea if it will be paid or not … if he lets him go & it's play on he looks silly, why not blow the whistle & let him get back behind the mark.' Joyboy suggested: 'Why does it HAVE to be 50 metres? If the rule is so hard to follow, make it 10 metres or something.' Another wrote: 'The stand rule is fine, the 50m penalty is the problem.' One fan declared: 'Absolutely it is a joke and needs to go.' The rules are regularly reviewed by the AFL, with a clarification on the 'stand' rule dropping ahead of the 2023 season. 'An opposition player cannot run toward the mark (and enter the protected area) and then elect to change their mind and retreat outside of the protected 5m area,' the AFL said at the time. 'Similarly, an opposition player cannot elect to leave the protected area and then change their intent and choose to come and stand the mark. 'Further all other players from the opposing team must be positioned behind the mark or otherwise outside the protected area.' It seems it has all just added up to more confusion and some simplification – or in fact a scrapping of the rule – might be needed moving forward.

Iilysh ready to hit the road and live out singing 'vantasy', as Idol judge keeps promise

Australian Idol runner-up Iilysh Retallick will be cruising around the southern Riverina in a new set of wheels. Keeping to his promise, Channel 7's reality television show judge Kyle Sandilands has delivered the singer a brand new van. The seven-seater LDV MIFA People Mover is an upgrade from the newly turned 18-year-old's hatchback, and she was over the moon about the delivery in front of Culcairn Bakery in Victoria on Monday, June 30. "My boyfriend, John, said that we were going on a trip to the snow and that we had to get up at the crack of dawn and we were leaving as soon as possible," she said. "Then he told me that he was going to take me to the bakery just to get some coffee and some brekkie before we go. "And so he took me down to the bakery and we were sitting there for a really long time and I think I got a little bit impatient and was wondering why we were still there, then all of these KIIS FM people came running in and surprised me and Kyle was on the other end of the phone." From the Sydney studio, Sandilands talked Iilysh through the van fitted with leather seats. "Promises made, promises delivered, get in your brand new car that is yours as of now," he said. Retallick said the van had apparently been sitting in Sandiands' driveway "for a really long time" and was extremely thankful, but would still like the radio host to come and eventually also visit her hometown. She is hoping to use her van for all future gigs and tour around the eastern states, and perhaps venture out west as well. Life after Australian Idol has been "amazing" for the singer, who will soon be hitting the recording studio to release her first single. "The song is definitely rock, of course, very modern, and I think that's all the hints I'll give," she said. She has been enjoying showing her West Australian boyfriend John Van Beek - who also finished in the top 8 in this season's Australian Idol - around the area. Retallick has her eyes on moving to Melbourne towards the end of the year to delve into the music industry further, but in the meantime has been writing songs, including some with her dad, Ross Retallick. Retallick will sing at the Albury Winter Glow event on Saturday, August 9. "It's super fun to have my first gig back after the show," she said. The 2026 Australian Idol applications are now open, and the singer encouraged anyone thinking about auditioning to do it. "It's a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity, and you won't regret it, no matter what the outcome is," she said. Huge blow for Channel 10 as 10 News+ attracts less viewers than The Project

Network 10 received yet another disappointing blow after it's replacement for The Project scored less viewers in its timeslot than the axed show regularly attracted. 10 News+ had received an intense marketing blitz over the last two weeks as the network made its bid to win over new viewers with their promise of putting 'the truth first'. Sadly for Network 10, that promise wasn't enough to win over viewers, with a mere 291,000 tuning in on Monday evening. To put those numbers into perspective, 7News attracted 1.5 million viewers, with 9News close behind with 1.45 million. What really rubs salt in the wound is that the final episode of The Project scored almost 500,000 viewers on Friday evening. After shedding almost half its audience, it remains to be seen whether the network's gamble of cancelling The Project was the right decision. Viewers delivered their verdict on social media on Monday evening, with many labelling 10 News+ a 'Temu ACA'. 'You replaced the project with a Temu ACA not seeing @theprojecttv is incredibly depressing. 10news+ sucks!' remarked one viewer. Another complained about the format of the new show, tweeting: 'Please no more long investigation reports it's 6pm! Much too heavy, much too serious, American looking set and awkward presentation.' 'This is proper @Channel7 style commercial JUNK. It's like watching a cross between Fox News and Anchorman. Why the silly news voices!? questioned another disgruntled viewer. One however, praised the show's lead story on convicted drug smuggler Debbie Voulgaris, who gave an exclusive interview from a Taiwan prison. 'Loving 10 news +, strong launch story. Is this the new Schapelle Corby story we all need to know about. 10 news should be very proud,' they wrote. Another added: 'That was a decent first show'. The news show's interview with the Prime Minister also sparked some viewer backlash, with journalists Denham Hitchcock and Amelia Brace being called out for their interviewing techniques, which saw the PM interrupted multiple times. 'Some ridiculous questions and hectoring tone from both hosts in this very disappointing interview with the PM,' ranted one. 'You replaced #theprojecttv for this tabloid junk? I'm turning this off!' complained another. 'This is trash, so dry and bland. Time for the project 2.0 and a game show in a prime time slot up against Home and Away. Good luck!' tweeted a third unimpressed viewer. While a fourth added: 'Oh dear. I thought I would give 10 News Plus a go. I feel like we have regressed 20 years!'

Footy world mourns Hall of Famer who became a Channel Seven star in retirement: 'Pioneer of the broadcast team'

The footy world is mourning the loss of Ian Day after his death aged 90. In his playing days, the talented rover was a Hall of Famer after starring for South Adelaide on their SANFL premiership run in 1964 before turning his attention to broadcasting with Channel Seven. Day was a pioneer of league football television coverage with Blair Schwartz and Bob Jervis, before defecting to Channel Nine after the free-to-air network secured the broadcast rights. He quickly earned an envied reputation for his professionalism when calling games. After Day was inducted into the SA Football Hall of Fame in 2007, the same honour followed at the Adelaide Oval Media Hall of Fame a decade later. 'I wasn't the greatest,' a humble Day said when reflecting on his 29-season media career. 'I was just this bloke who loved my sport... and lasted 30 years. To be in the Hall of Fame, when I never thought I did anything special, stunned me.' 'Saddened to hear of the passing of South Adelaide legend Ian Day aged 90,' Channel 7's John Casey posted on X on Tuesday. 'Daisy' was a pioneer of the Ch7 broadcast team starting a 30-year commentary run in 1965 and setting the standard for all of us who followed. 'Condolences to Ian's family and many friends.' AFL identity Patrick Keane labelled Day a 'legend' when it came to SANFL broadcasts. 'His voice is a central part of memories for so many in the time he called games,' Keane posted on X. 'Also a fine rover with West Adelaide and South Adelaide and a key member of the Panthers' last flag side in 1964 which famously went bottom to top.' According to Adelaide Now, away from footy Day was a state junior golf champion who boasted a handicap of one when a teenager. His son Tim played baseball for Australia, while grandson Sam is on the books of the Brisbane Lions.

Samantha Jade to play Julia Roberts' role in Pretty Woman the Musical showing in Brisbane and Sydney

Samantha Jade is set to play her 'dream role' after she landed the lead in Pretty Woman: The Musical, based on the iconic movie and made famous by Julia Roberts. The 38-year-old singer and actress will star as Vivian (Roberts' character) in the upcoming Broadway and West End musical, which makes its debut in Brisbane and Sydney later this year. The show will play at Queensland Performing Arts Centre from October 5 and at the Theatre Royal, Sydney from November. 'This is a dream role for me. Such a beloved film that is a favourite of so many worldwide, and I'm delighted to be able to originate the role for Australian audiences,' the Perth-born star said. 'I never thought I would do a musical because I dance and sing, and act, but all separately, not at the same time and this is a big challenge. 'I love this movie so much, and the music in this is next level.' Jade told Sunrise she was in LA checking out of a one-night stay at the Beverly Wilshire, the famous hotel from the film, when she found out she got the role. The 1990 film sees rich businessman Edward (played by Richard Gere) hire Vivan, a prostitute, to join him at several social events; however, things soon get tricky when he begins to fall in love with someone from a very different world. Now, fans of the characters will get to know them in a whole new way with a dazzling theatrical take on a love story for the ages. Jade said the film was her 'comfort movie' that she used to watch with her mum, who sadly died in 2014 after a battle with cancer. 'It was one of our four favourites and last year was the 10th anniversary of her passing, so I was watching it a lot, weirdly, and then I got a call to audition and I was like 'Oh my god' this just seems perfect,' she said. As for who is playing her lover, all Jade could share was that the actor was 'someone Australian and someone great.' 'We couldn't get Richard, but we've got the next best thing.' Suzanne Jones of Jones Theatrical Group said the group knew if they didn't offer Jade the role, they would immediately regret it. 'We knew from the first time Samantha auditioned that not offering her the role of Vivian would be a big mistake. Big. Huge! Her voice perfectly suits Bryan Adams' iconic score, and I know Australian audiences will fall in love with her when she makes her debut at QPAC in October,' she said. No stranger to a live audience, Jade won Channel 7's X Factor in 2012 and has since amassed a collective 91 million streams and 2.3 million sales worldwide, released the song Shake That with Pitbull and released her album NINE in 2015, which hit number two on the ARIA charts. Our homegrown talent has been a regular fixture on Australian TV, starring as Kylie Minogue in the miniseries INXS: Never Tear Us Apart, as well as an ongoing guest-starring role in Home and Away. Her screen credits don't end there; in 2023, she joined the cast of the second season of Celebrity Apprentice, and last year was the runner-up of Channel 7's Dancing With The Stars. Jade has continued with her music career of late, releasing her EP Love. Sick. Vol 2 in August. Pretty Woman: The Musical features a rock score from GRAMMY winners Bryan Adams and Jim Vallance (Summer of '69, Heaven), direction and choreography by Tony Award winner Jerry Mitchell (Kinky Boots, Hairspray) and a book by the original movie's director Garry Marshall and screenwriter J.F. Lawton. The musical made its Broadway debut at the Nederlander Theatre in 2018 and has played in Spain, Italy, Poland and Germany as well as an extended West End season. Further casting announcements are set to be made in the coming weeks.
