James Wood had a career-high five hits, including his 23rd home run, hours after being named to the Home Run Derby. Jake Irvin survived a rocky first to pitch six solid innings, and the Washington Nationals beat the Detroit Tigers 11–7 on Thursday night.
Wood also had four singles, two RBIs, and scored three runs. Alex Call had three hits for Washington, which has won three of four. Paul DeJong, in his third game back from the injured list, added a three-run homer. After allowing three runs and three hits in the first, Irvin (7–3) tossed five scoreless innings and did not allow another hit. It was career win No. 500 for Nationals manager Dave Martinez.
Detroit rallied late as Gleyber Torres and Wenceel Perez had RBI singles in the seventh. Parker Meadows singled home a run in the eighth, and another scored on Javier Baez's ground out to make it 9–7. However, Luis Garcia Jr. and Call had RBI singles in the bottom half.
Spencer Torkelson hit a three-run homer for the AL-leading Tigers, who are 8–8 over their past 16 games. Dietrich Enns (1–1) allowed eight runs and eight hits in four-plus innings for Detroit. With two on and two out in the first, Torkelson ended a 10-pitch at-bat with his 19th home run.
Washington rallied in the first as Call's bases-loaded single brought home two runs, and DeJong followed with a three-run homer. Wood made it 6–3 with a solo shot in the second and added an RBI single in the fourth.
Key moment: After Detroit cut it to 9–7, Wood led off the bottom of the eighth with a single, and Washington eventually added two insurance runs.
Key stat: Wood is hitting .361 (30 for 83) with three doubles, seven homers, 22 RBIs, and 20 runs scored over his past 22 games.
Up next: Tigers RHP Reese Olson (4–3, 2.96 ERA) is expected to be activated from the injured list and start the series opener at Cleveland against Indians RHP Slade Cecconi (3–3, 3.64). Nationals RHP Mike Soroka (3–5, 4.70) goes against Red Sox RHP Lucas Giolito (4–3, 3.99).

Cubs starter Jameson Taillon goes on injured list, will miss more than a month with calf strain

Chicago Cubs starter Jameson Taillon may miss more than a month with a right calf strain, manager Craig Counsell said Friday after the team placed the veteran right-hander on the injured list. Taillon is 7–6 with a 4.44 ERA and a mainstay in the NL Central leaders' rotation despite some ups and downs in his ninth major league season. The 33-year-old has lost three straight games with a 10.66 ERA in that span after winning five in a row. Taillon, who had been scheduled to start Saturday, sustained the injury while running after a bullpen session on Thursday. 'He felt a grab yesterday,' Counsell said. 'He's going to miss a pretty significant amount of time.' The IL move is retroactive to Tuesday. In a corresponding move, the Cubs recalled lefty Jordan Wicks from Triple-A Iowa before their game against the St. Louis Cardinals. Wicks is expected to work from the bullpen, although 11 of his 12 appearances for Iowa were starts. He was 1–3 with one save and a 4.06 ERA with the Triple-A affiliate. Wicks appeared in two games with the Cubs in April, pitching two innings and going 0–1 with a 13.50 ERA. 'He's got to come up here and attack the strike zone and get himself in favorable counts … to be effective,' Counsell said. Taillon's injury left the Cubs scrambling to plug another hole in their rotation. Left-hander Justin Steele, an All-Star in 2023 with a 16–5 record, made only four starts this season before undergoing elbow surgery that will sideline him for the rest of 2025. Lefty Shota Imanaga has won two starts since returning from a hamstring strain that kept him out for seven weeks.

Nationals place pitcher Trevor Williams on the injured list with an elbow sprain

The Washington Nationals placed starter Trevor Williams on the 15-day injured list with a right elbow sprain Friday, two days after the veteran right-hander gave up a season-high seven runs in an 11–2 loss to Detroit. Williams is 3–10 with a 6.21 ERA in 17 starts this season and is tied for second in the National League in losses. He agreed to a two-year, $14 million deal after going 6–1 with a 2.03 ERA last year despite being limited to 13 starts because of a strained muscle in his throwing arm. Washington recalled right-hander Ryan Loutos from Triple-A Rochester a day after demoting him. Loutos is 1–0 with a 13.50 ERA in eight games with the Los Angeles Dodgers and the Nationals this season. The Nationals also activated catcher Keibert Ruiz from the injured list and optioned catcher Drew Millas to Rochester. Ruiz had been sidelined with a concussion after getting hit by a foul ball on June 23. Millas hit .143 with an RBI in three games.

Moritz Wagner is returning to the Magic on a 1-year deal, AP source says, as NBA free agency continues

The Orlando Magic are bringing back forward Moritz Wagner on a one-year deal, a person with knowledge of the move said Friday. Wagner, the brother of Magic forward Franz Wagner, will sign a contract worth $5 million, according to the person who spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because the deal likely will not be finalized until the league's offseason moratorium on moves is lifted Sunday. Free agency officially started Monday, and most deals that have been agreed to since then–along with some trades from last month, including the one that will bring Kevin Durant to Houston from Phoenix–can begin getting final approval from the league at that time as well. There are several notable free agents still available. Among them: For all the latest headlines, follow our Google News channel online or via the app. Injured guard Damian Lillard is available after the surprise waive-and-stretch move by Milwaukee that allowed the Bucks to agree to terms with former Indiana forward Myles Turner. Lillard isn't expected to play much, if at all, this season because he still needs at least several months to recover from an Achilles tendon tear suffered in the playoffs. Veteran center Al Horford, who helped Boston win the 2024 NBA title, is 62 games away from reaching 1,200 for his career. Point guard Russell Westbrook is set to enter his 18th year in the league and averaged 13.3 points per game with Denver this past season. Point guard Chris Paul, who turned 40 in May, would be playing a 21st season in the league. He's coming off a year when he started all 82 games for San Antonio. There's also the question surrounding Golden State restricted free agent Jonathan Kuminga, who has been mentioned frequently in potential sign-and-trades that could send him to a new club. Moritz Wagner tore his ACL in a game in December and has hopes of being ready for the start of this coming season. The Magic earlier declined an option to bring him back on a deal that would have paid $11 million this year, and the backup center wound up taking less money to remain in Orlando–a team with serious hopes of contending in the Eastern Conference. The Magic added Desmond Bane in a trade with Memphis last month, landed guard Tyus Jones earlier in free agency, and are expected to give Paolo Banchero, the No. 1 pick in the 2022 draft, an extension this summer–one that likely will be in the range of nearly $240 million for five years and would represent the biggest contract in franchise history. Moritz Wagner was averaging a career-best 12.9 points through 30 games last season when he got hurt. He played for Germany's team that won the 2023 Basketball World Cup and was with his national team again for the Paris Olympics in 2024. He is entering his eighth NBA season and what will be his fifth full year with the Magic.
