James Cameron calls Christopher Nolan's Oppenheimer a ‘moral cop-out'

The Guardiana day ago
James Cameron has described Oppenheimer, Christopher Nolan's multi-Oscar-winning 2023 biopic about the atomic scientist Robert Oppenheimer, a 'moral cop-out'.
Speaking to Deadline about his forthcoming project Ghosts of Hiroshima, about the effects of the bomb in that city, Cameron said he disagreed with Nolan's narrative choices. 'It's interesting what he stayed away from,' said Cameron. 'Look, I love the film-making, but I did feel that it was a bit of a moral cop-out.'
In Oppenheimer, Cillian Murphy stars as the scientist who led the development and design of the atomic bomb during the second world war. The film covers its inception, testing and deployment in Japan in 1945, when the bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki led to the deaths of as many as a quarter of a million people by the end of that year – as well as hastening the end of the conflict.
The film depicts Oppenheimer after the war as increasingly wracked by the legacy of his invention, and haunted by images of suffering. However, Cameron said he was among those viewers who felt the film did not go far enough in depicting the immediate aftermath of the attacks.
'It's not like Oppenheimer didn't know the effects,' he said. 'I don't like to criticise another film-maker's film, but there's only one brief moment where he sees some charred bodies in the audience, and then the film goes on to show how it deeply moved him.
'But I felt that it dodged the subject. I don't know whether the studio or Chris felt that that was a third rail that they didn't want to touch, but I want to go straight at the third rail. I'm just stupid that way.'
Oppenheimer was released in 2023 and won Oscars for best picture, director, leading actor (for Murphy), supporting actor (for Robert Downey Jr), and three others. It also made $975m (£720m) at the box office.
At the time of its release, Nolan responded to criticism similar to that put forward by Cameron by explaining he wanted to represent Oppenheimer's subjective experience. 'It was always my intention to rigidly stick to that,' he told Variety. 'Oppenheimer heard about the bombing at the same time that the rest of the world did.
'I wanted to show somebody who is starting to gain a clearer picture of the unintended consequences of his actions. It was as much about what I don't show as what I show.'

Deadline's Mike Fleming put a rhetorical rebuttal to Cameron, saying Nolan may have reasoned a different film-maker would tell the story of the victims of the bombings in Japan. 'Okay, I'll put up my hand,' said Cameron. 'I'll do it, Chris. No problem. You come to my premiere and say nice things.'
Cameron's film, which has not yet begun formal production, will be an adaptation of Charles Pellegrino's forthcoming nonfiction book Ghosts of Hiroshima, which brings together testimonies from victims and survivors of the attacks.
Before then he will release the latest Avatar film, Fire and Ash. His first entry in that franchise is the highest-grossing film of all time, while the sequel is the third. Avengers: Endgame is the second highest-grossing film, but Cameron's 1997 disaster movie Titanic is the fourth.

28 Years Later writer's 'forgotten' film with Cillian Murphy hailed 'best of all time'

Our community members are treated to special offers, promotions and adverts from us and our partners. You can check out at any time. More info Fans of the horror genre are descending upon cinemas for the highly anticipated premiere of 28 Years Later, the long-awaited sequel to the influential zombie film 28 Days Later. Directed by acclaimed filmmaker Danny Boyle and written by accomplished screenwriter Alex Garland, the movie picks up nearly three decades after the events of the original 2002 film. The first instalment introduced audiences to a then-relatively unknown Cillian Murphy and the terrifying 'rage' virus, which redefined the zombie genre with its fast-paced, adrenaline-fuelled portrayal of the undead. The original film received widespread critical acclaim for its groundbreaking depiction of zombies, departing from the traditional slow-moving creatures often seen in horror movies. Now, the franchise is back with a vengeance. The latest instalment's synopsis teases: "It's been almost three decades since the rage virus escaped a biological weapons laboratory, and now, still in a ruthlessly enforced quarantine, some have found ways to exist amidst the infected. "One such group of survivors lives on a small island connected to the mainland by a single, heavily-defended causeway. "When one of the group leaves the island on a mission into the dark heart of the mainland, he discovers secrets, wonders, and horrors that have mutated not only the infected but other survivors as well", reports Surrey Live. (Image: Fox Searchlight Pictures) Interestingly, before collaborating on 28 Years Later, Alex worked with director Danny on another film that has largely flown under the radar. Starring Cillian Murphy, many hail the 2007 movie 'Sunshine' as "the best sci-fi film of all time". Set in the year 2057, it tells the tale of a team sent to the stars tasked with rekindling our dimming sun, thus saving humanity from the brink. Their odyssey takes an intricate turn upon discovering an erstwhile spacecraft that had embarked on an identical quest. Including notables like Cillian, Rose Byrne, Michelle Yeoh, Chris Evans, and Benedict Wong, 'Sunshine' is up for viewing on Disney+. A fan exclaimed: "Sunshine is the most underrated movie of all time. No exaggeration. For me personally it is my favourite movie. I discovered this movie in 2020 and since I have seen it about 16 times." Another fan said: "Watched this for the first time and I already know I will watch it again, and make others watch it as well. Sunshine is a genuinely enjoyable, engaging, and interesting sci-fi movie." (Image: Fox Searchlight Pictures) Elsewhere, another shared: "Tonight was my third or fourth time watching this film. Of course, it has all the standard elements of being lost in space, and finding the ship sent before you - which has been lost for years - but there's just something different about this one. "They detail the lengths to which people go in order to survive, and subsequently, how they sacrifice themselves when the mission (restarting the sun) hangs in the balance." Sunshine is now streaming on Disney+

Sony insider drops huge hint about PS6 release date

THE coveted PlayStation 6 could be released in as little as two years, according to analysts and a top Sony insider. However, Mark Cerny, the lead architect of several Sony consoles, is in no rush to get the PS6 onto shelves. 1 In a new interview, Cerny explained that PS5 Pro software enhancements, like FSR 4 upscaling, are his priority, Notebook Check reported. Many analysts have projected a PS6 release date in 2027 or 2028. While recent discussions have raised hopes that the PS6 release date may arrive sooner rather than later - it is still thought to be years away. Cerny, the lead designer of the PlayStation Vita, PS4 and PS5, appeared to be focused on boosting existing Sony consoles and games through software updates. "What I'm trying to do is prepare for the next generation of consoles, so my timeframe is multi-year here," he said. Talk of a "multi-year" timeline suggests analysts may be correct with their 2027 or 2028 forecasts. Although a handheld device that supports PS5 games may also be released around the same time, analysts have noted. Video reveals TikToker was minutes away from death…but can you spot why?

With the summer holidays approaching, many will be looking forward to going abroad. But you should be careful when picking up shells on the beach, as it could leave you minutes from death. A video, shared by TikToker Beckylee Rawls, shows her walking along a beach in Okinawa in Japan when she picks up a pretty shell. She shows it to the camera before putting it back into the sea – and it was only later that she realised her mistake. In another video she holds up a similar shell, saying: 'Yep, that was me picking up a marbled cone snail – one of the deadliest creatures on Earth. Had no idea.' She explained: 'I was out tidepooling in Okinawa, Japan, and I came across this shell. 'As you can see, it's one of my favourite shells to collect because the pattern is so stunning. 'So I pick up the shell and that's when I noticed the shell's alive, and the black and white tube you see is the snail's siphon which it breathes out of. 'This is also the end of the snail that shoots a harpoon to sting and inject its victims with venom.' She said it was only after Googling the shell that she realised her mistake. 'I was playing with the most venomous creature in the ocean that can lead to full paralysis or fatality,' she said, She explained that the species is allegedly nicknamed the 'cigarette snail', because 'you have just enough time after it stings you to light a cigarette before you pass'. 'I hope my story spreads awareness that not all pretty shells are harmless,' she added. She also makes it clear in the comments section of the video - which has nearly racked up 30 million views – that the shells she has at home are ones that she found empty and washed up on the beach. There are around 700 species of cone snails, all of which are highly venomous. They can be found in the South China Sea, the Pacific Ocean and the waters around Australia. These delicate but deadly snails have a large variety of patterns on their shells, which can prompt people to pick them up. This map shows the location of the geographer cone snail, which is one of the most toxic species They possess a single hollow harpoon-shaped tooth that can extend to inject toxic venom into prey, designed to paralyse it. There is currently no antivenom for cone snail injuries since the composition of the venom can vary significantly between species. However, the proteins in cone snail venom are being investigated by scientists for their potential as painkillers. Reports suggest there have been three dozen deaths and more than one hundred injuries from cone snail stings since 1670. However, only six stings have been attributed to the marbled cone snail – and none have been verifiable fatalities. What are cone snails and how deadly are they? Cone snails are among the most venomous creatures on earth, with the most toxic being the 'textile' and 'geography' species. Venom from just one cone snail is enough to theoretically kill 700 people. All capture their prey by means of harpoon-like hollow teeth (radula) that are rapidly jabbed into their prey to inject the toxic venom. Attacks on humans usually occur when a cone snail is either stepped on in the ocean or picked up from the water or the beach. Ironically, among the compounds found in cone snail venom are proteins which, when isolated, have enormous potential as pain-killing drugs. Research shows that certain of these proteins target specific human pain receptors and can be up to 10,000 times more potent than morphine without morphine 's addictive properties and side-effects.
