Monday's briefing: Tottenham worry over Maddison injury and Chelsea sign Hato
Tottenham midfielder James Maddison sustained a 'bad' injury before manager Thomas Frank bolstered his squad with the arrival of Joao Palhinha. Chelsea signed Netherlands defender Jorrel Hato, while Newcastle boss Eddie Howe is unsure what the future holds for wantaway striker Alexander Isak. Elsewhere, Scottish Premiership champions Celtic scraped past St Mirren. Maddison suffers fresh injury setback James Maddison sustained a serious-looking knee injury as Tottenham's pre-season tour of Asia concluded with a 1-1 draw against Newcastle in Seoul. The England international, who missed the closing stages of last season with a knee problem, was carried off on a stretcher after going down unchallenged late in the game. Manager Thomas Frank said the issue appeared to be a 'bad injury' before Spurs later announced the signing of Portugal midfielder Joao Palhinha on loan from Bayern Munich. Sunday's friendly was otherwise notable for the emotional reception departing South Korea forward Son Heung-min received from fans in his home city. Teenage Dutch defender moves to Stamford Bridge Chelsea completed the signing of Netherlands defender Jorrel Hato from Ajax in a deal worth a reported £37million. The 19-year-old, who has been capped six times by his country, signed a seven-year contract at Stamford Bridge. He became the Blues' eighth signing of the summer transfer window. Hato, who can operate in central defence or at left-back, said: 'I thought a lot about my future and wanted to take the next step in my career. Chelsea is the best place for me to do that.' Howe leaves door open for Isak Newcastle manager Eddie Howe is hoping to see striker Alexander Isak back in training in the coming days. Isak, who has been the subject of interest from Liverpool, missed the Magpies' pre-season tour of Asia amid speculation over his future. Newcastle are returning home after their trip concluded against Spurs on and Howe hopes the Sweden international will report back as normal. Howe told The Chronicle after the game: 'Of course I'd like him to but whether or not he will, I don't know at this moment in time. Other people have been dealing with that situation back at home.' Late deflected strike secures narrow win for Celtic William Hill Premiership champions Celtic left it late before beginning their title defence with a 1-0 victory over St Mirren at Parkhead. Luke McCowan's deflected strike three minutes from time finally broke the visitors' resistance. The substitute collected Daizen Maeda's square pass on the edge of a crowded penalty box and fired a shot which appeared to spin off Mark O'Hara's leg and nestle into the bottom corner of the net. Celtic had earlier hit the frame of the goal through Benjamin Nygren, Reo Hatate and Adam Idah, while Callum McGregor had a goal disallowed following VAR intervention. What's on today? Hearts host Aberdeen at Tynecastle in the final match of the opening round of fixtures of the new Scottish Premiership season.

Julio Rodriguez hits 100th career homer as Mariners edge Rangers
August 3 - Julio Rodriguez hit a milestone home run as the Seattle Mariners defeated the visiting Texas Rangers 5-4 Sunday afternoon. Jorge Polanco and J.P. Crawford also went deep for the Mariners, who took three of four games in the series between the American League West rivals and improved to 10-3 against Texas this season. Rodriguez's two-run homer in the third inning off Jacob deGrom (10-4) was the 100th of his career and made him the first player in major league history to have 20 homers and 20 stolen bases in each of their first four years. Adolis Garcia went 3-for-3 with a double and home run for the Rangers and Corey Seager also homered. Rookie Logan Evans (5-4) remained unbeaten in six starts at T-Mobile Park. The right-hander allowed three runs on five hits over five innings, with no walks and three strikeouts. Andres Munoz pitched a scoreless ninth for his 25th save of the season. Polanco homered to right field with one out in the bottom of the second to open the scoring. The Rangers took the lead in the third as Josh Smith lined a two-out single to right and Seager hit a shot to deep left-center that just eluded Rodriguez's reach and bounced off the top of the outfield wall and over. Cal Raleigh walked with two outs in the bottom of the inning and Rodriguez homered to right-center to put Seattle up 3-2. Garcia led off the fourth with a double into the left-field corner and, with two outs, Rowdy Tellez double off the wall in left to tie it. The Mariners again responded in the bottom of the frame as Dominic Canzone drew a two-out walk and Crawford homered to right for a 5-3 lead. Garcia went deep to left-center with one out in the sixth off reliever Carlos Vargas to complete the scoring. DeGrom gave up five runs on four hits in five innings. He walked three and fanned five. --Field Level Media

Elijah Just off to a flyer at Motherwell as Kiwi hopes Rangers showing can be the catalyst for World Cup dream
The summer signing has made an impressive start to life with the Steelmen Elijah Just wants to shine at Motherwell this season - and cement his place in New Zealand's World Cup squad. The 25-year-old midfielder got off to a good start at Fir Park on Saturday with an excellent display in their 1-1 draw with Rangers. Just was signed by new Well boss Jens Berthel Askou this summer from Danish outfit Horsens. And he's convinced a move to the Scottish Premiership can increase his chances of going to the USA, Mexico and Canada next summer. Just scored the Kiwis' first AND last goals in their successful World Cup qualifying campaign. He's got stiff competition in New Zealand's midfield, with the likes of NAC Breda's Matthew Garbett, Nottingham Fores t's Marko Stamenic and St Etienne's Ben Old in the mix for a starting slot. But Just hopes his performances in Lanarkshire can ensure he's part of coach Darren Bazeley's final squad. He said: 'This season is obviously really important for me personally. It's one year until the World Cup and I want to put myself in the best possible position for the national team. 'I hope I can get a good run of games, play well and we'll see what happens. 'That's a nice stat to have (qualifying goals) but the current group of players we have with New Zealand is really strong. 'There are players playing all around the world, competition is really high. 'But if I can do well in the Scottish Premiership this season, it gives me the best opportunity to play. 'The World Cup was a massive motivation for me coming here, to be in that squad. 'There are good players at really good clubs around the world but this is a massive opportunity for me at Motherwell.' Motherwell were fully deserving of their point against Rangers and will probably feel they should have won their opening day fixture. Emmanuel Longelo's late equaliser cancelled out James Tavernier's opener for the visitors - but Askou's team were on top for long spells. Just was a key part of that and he enjoyed his first Premiership experience. He praised Well's bravery on the ball as they impressed against Russell Martin's side. He said: 'When you play a team like Rangers who have a lot of quality in the first game, it's important you apply yourself the way the manager wants you to. 'We did a really good job at that. The boys were very courageous so it's a step in the right direction for us. 'It was very intense, the fans were loud. When I went to warm up, I got the feeling of - this is some proper football. 'But when the game got going, I felt good and comfortable. 'As the game went on and we didn't have the equaliser after a few chances, you start to think, OK we really need something here. 'But when the goal went in, we pushed on and had another two chances at the end so we're really happy.' Askou - just like Martin at Rangers - is asking his players to take risks in possession and play out from the back. And Just said: 'Our centre-backs are so courageous. Paul McGinn hit a fake shot in our box, it went out for a corner and Rangers scored. 'But the boys just told him to keep going because that's the way we want to play and we'll stick to it. 'We know if we play with that style, we'll create chances and be a good side.'
