The new round of technological revolution has brought profound changes to the industry, and technological innovation has entered an unprecedented intensive period. The current competition in the international high-tech field is having a profound impact on the global order and development pattern. In order to occupy a strategic high ground in the new round of global technology competition, countries are focusing on cutting-edge fields of technological innovation, increasing investment in basic research, and striving to make breakthroughs in forward-looking, pioneering, and original research.
In the early 1950s, there were no more than 50000 scientific and technological personnel in China, among them with only over 600 specialized in scientific research. Nowadays, the quantity and quality of China's scientific and technological talent team have increased, forming the world's most complete discipline system and the largest talent system. In 2023, China's research and experimental development expenditure reached 3327.8 billion RMB, and the number of invention patent applications reached 1678000. Especially in recent years, China has adhered to the path of independent innovation, its technological competitiveness is continuously improving, and there is a large number emergence of world leading independent innovation of complete sets of technological equipment and products, such as high-speed railway systems, space exploration projects, supercomputing systems, satellite positioning and navigation service technology systems. Nowadays, China has become one of the world's largest technological innovators, fundamentally changing the global technological landscape.
Since the 18th National Congress of the CPC in 2012, China has achieved a transformation in scientific and technological development from quantity to quality by leveraging the advantages of socialism with Chinese characteristics and taking the path of independent innovation in science and technology with Chinese characteristics, which is mainly reflected in the following aspects:
Firstly, the national and market forces are closely integrated to concentrate efforts on achieving breakthroughs in key scientific and technological fields. The national system for technological innovation aims to rapidly enhance the country's scientific and technological innovation capabilities. By fully integrating with market mechanisms, relying on scientific coordination and concentrated efforts, optimising mechanisms and collaborative research and development, and the major innovation projects of modernisation are taken as the focus of strategic implementation, and a series of institutional frameworks for innovative development are constructed. For example, in recent years, during the organisation and implementation of major national science and technology projects, relying on the national system, it has realised the centralised allocation of key resources, ensured the efficient allocation of resources, and maximised the economic and social benefits of scientific research resources.
Secondly, multiple entities such as enterprises, universities, and research institutions collaborate on innovation through technology alliances and industry alliances, and share innovative achievements. Although there is competition among collaborative innovation entities, cooperation among innovation units is more important. In the collaborative innovation mechanism, enterprises are not only the main body of innovation, but also the main force driving innovation and creation. In the process of Chinese path to modernisation, private enterprises have been given the opportunity to flourish in the era, which have grown from small to large, from weak to strong, and already have strong innovation capabilities. The huge market space and active creativity of enterprises have laid a solid foundation for the path of independent innovation with Chinese characteristics in the new era, and the continuously improving socialist market economy system and mechanism have also created a favourable institutional environment for enterprises to innovate independently. In recent years, China has vigorously promoted institutional reform to break down ideological and institutional barriers that restrict technological innovation, allowing enterprises to truly become the main body of technological innovation, and making the market an important force in allocating innovative resources.
Third, the Belt and Road Initiative countries work together to meet global challenges relying on scientific and technological cooperation. Scientific and technological innovation and international cooperation are key areas to promote high-quality development, key factors to address global challenges, and key directions of all BRI countries' common concern. At present, China has signed intergovernmental scientific and technological cooperation agreements with more than 80 BRI co-construction countries, built more than 50 BRI joint laboratories in transportation, materials, energy and other fields, and built more than 20 agricultural technology demonstration centers and more than 70 overseas industrial parks in BRI co-construction countries. China has also established 9 cross-border technology transfer centers for ASEAN, Africa, Latin America and other regions, and has held more than 300 technology exchange and docking activities, promoting the implementation of over a thousand cooperation projects.

The Neue Klasse, boasting what the German automaker calls "Gen 6" architecture, incorporates a completely new battery system and drivetrain. The sophisticated framework is geared towards maximising efficiency while decreasing energy consumption, waste, rolling resistance, and the overall weight of vehicles. As a result, BMW anticipates the first vehicles built on this architecture will achieve an impressive range of 800 kilometres of range on a single charge, setting a new benchmark not only for the brand but for the entire auto sector. "We believe that this architecture will raise the benchmark for how we envision the EV of the future," Van Binsbergen said. "With its performance capabilities, an unparalleled range, and rapid charging speeds of 400 kW, the Neue Klasse will redefine what customers expect from electric vehicles." The revolution does not stop at range and efficiency; the Neue Klasse introduces a sleek and intuitive digital experience. Featuring a minimalistic design, the vehicle's interior showcases a cutting-edge freeform touchscreen interface and a panoramic digital display that extends across the dashboard. The firm is keen to align with environmental, social, and governance (ESG) principles, ensuring that its operations—especially in South Africa—meet or exceed legal environmental regulations. "Our operations here remain well ahead of the legal requirements, focusing on minimising water usage, emissions, and waste," Van Binsbergen said, emphasising the company's commitment to making a positive social impact through education and community investment. By 2030, BMW Group expects Battery Electric Vehicles to account for 50% of global vehicle sales and will be available for 100% of today's market segments. Since 2015, BMW has been a pioneer in e-mobility in South Africa, partnering with dealers to enhance electric charging infrastructure and advocate for environmentally responsible business practices. However, Van Binsbergen said the growth of electric mobility within South Africa hinged on the government's support for the infrastructure necessary to sustain this transition. "We need adequate charging networks and governmental focus on electromobility to facilitate consumer adoption of electric vehicles," he said. BMW has recently invested R4.2 billion into their South African operations, aimed at maintaining production capacity and safeguarding jobs. Van Binsbergen emphasised that 96% of the vehicles produced at their South African plant were exported, showcasing the company's significant role in driving the national economy despite the challenges in the domestic market. Only 15 of China's EV brands projected to stay viable by 2030, says AlixPartners
Only 15 out of 129 brands that sell electric vehicles and plug-in hybrids in China will be financially viable by 2030 as intense competition forces consolidation and some to exit the market, consultancy AlixPartners said on Thursday. The 15 brands are projected to account for about 75% of China's EV and plug-in hybrid market by the end of the decade, each averaging annual sales of 1.02-million vehicles, AlixPartners said, without specifying brand names. However, consolidation in China is expected to proceed more slowly than in other markets, said Stephen Dyer, head of AlixPartners' automotive practice in Asia, because local governments may support non-viable brands due to their importance to regional economies, employment and supply chains. "China is one of the most competitive NEV (new energy vehicle) markets in the world, with intense price wars, rapid innovation and new entrants constantly raising the bar," Dyer said. "The environment has driven remarkable advances in technology and cost efficiency, but it has also left many companies struggling to achieve sustainable profitability." China's automotive market, the world's largest, is facing a price war and significant overcapacity which are straining profitability. Aside from BYD and Li Auto, no other publicly listed Chinese EV maker has achieved full-year profitability. Chinese regulators have called for carmakers to halt the price war. However, Dyer said it would likely continue, but through "hidden" factors such as insurance subsidies and zero interest financing rather than direct price cuts. The capacity utilisation ratio at Chinese car plants fell to an average of 50% in China last year, the lowest in a decade, pressuring profits, Dyer said.

China seeks safe and quick progress on assisted driving technology
In its push for assisted-driving technology, and ultimately fully self-driving cars, Beijing is seeking to help homegrown carmakers in the same way it supported China's rapid rise to become the world's electric car juggernaut. Last year, China's government lined up nine carmakers for public tests to advance the adoption of self-driving cars. In their Level 3 push, Chinese regulators also are upping the regulatory ante by holding carmakers and parts suppliers liable if their systems fail and cause an accident. Legislation passed in Britain last year adopted a similar approach to liability. At the Shanghai auto show in April, several companies touted progress toward rolling out vehicles with Level 3 capability. Tech giant Huawei said it is ready to introduce a Level 3 system for highways after simulated testing of more than 600-million kilometres. It showed a video of drivers and passengers singing karaoke as the car drove itself. Geely's Zeekr brand debuted the luxury SUV 9X, featuring Level 3 software the carmaker said is ready for mass production in the third quarter if regulations allow. Zeekr is also applying to be part of a second batch of carmakers to undergo government Level 3 validation tests. Traditional carmakers at the Shanghai auto show such as Mercedes-Benz and Volkswagen said they were pushing their most advanced assisted driving features but stopped short of crossing the Level 3 liability line. Getting there is a challenge as they are at a cost disadvantage against their Chinese rivals, analysts said. Mercedes-Benz CTO Markus Schaefer told Reuters while chip and computing power prices have fallen, the additional safety required for Level 3 will cost much more.
